11. Change Talk
11
“Change talk is any self expressed
language that is an argument for
change”
(Miller and Rollnick, 2012)
12. TIP
12
Change Talk has been shown to be a
pre-cursor to change. The more
change talk a client is saying
(something you can help to evoke),
the more likely they are to adhere to
and make a change.
(Butterworth, 2008)
22. 22
Have a chat to a person near you.
If you don’t want to have a go, ask
to join another group to observe.
Talk to your partner about a change you’ve been
thinking of making but haven’t yet made. As they’re
talking, notice the different types of Change Talk. Use
OQs and Rs to learn more. Next slide for DARNCAT
24. Ques%ons
Q: Knowing when to plan?
A: This is something we will cover in more depth this %me. Knowing when not to move to
planning is as important as knowing when to go to planning.
You’ll be hearing a lot of change talk, mainly mobilising change talk but also preparatory. Moving
to planning can be done in a number of ways, a nice way of tes&ng the water can be with a
summary of change talk and a follow up ques%ons such as
- Where does this leave us?
- What if anything do you think you might do?
- What’s next now?
Depending on an affirma%ve answer you’ll know that now is the %me to move to planning.
We’ll discuss when not to move to planning more in next month’s MI Club in March.
