Students will become familiar with Palm Beach

learn how to locate and critically evaluate
information for use in college-level research
papers and projects.

materials including books, encyclopedias, scholarly articles and
periodicals.
Students will be able to locate and cite bibliographic information.
Students will sharpen their critical thinking skills for evaluating library
sources and Internet websites for currency, reliability/relevancy,
authority, and purpose/point of view.
Students will recognize forms of plagiarism and methods to avoid
plagiarizing.

Locate a print book on your topic in the library database. Remember to use
Boolean operators and truncation and to use the sort function to sort by
publishing date.
Note the call number (location number) for the book.
Retrieve the book and record the bibliographic information

Use the library database to locate a current scholarly article on your
topic. Make sure the article is less than 5 years old. Save the article as a
PDF file to read later. Use a citation tool to generate a citation for the
article.

Visit the Reference Dept. of the library on the 2nd floor.
Locate the World Book encyclopedia and look up your
topic. Consult the Bedford Handbook to formulate your
bibliographic citation.

Visit the library periodical department on the second floor of
the library. Examine the selection of print magazines and use
the CRAAP test to determine if the source is a popular
publication or if it is a scholarly journal. Write down the name
of the publisher and the date, volume and year of publication.
Bonus: Compare the periodicals and newspapers you find while
doing a general search of the Library Catalog

EVALUATING INTERNET RESOURCES
Identify two different Internet websites. For each site, find the author and
his/her credentials, the URL for the site, the sponsoring organization, and the
date of the last update. Use your critical thinking skills to evaluate the currency
of the site, if there is any bias, if the author is an authority on the subject, and
the purpose and intended audience for the site.
BONUS: Find a more credible site and tell why it is trustworthy.

AVOIDING PLAGIARISM
Take of the sources you have already found and
think of how you can synthesize that information
into your research. Use the Bedford Handbook or
the Library research guides to learn more about in-
text citations, direct quotes and paraphrasing.
