4. Editor’s Note
umankind has been grappling with health
Hconcerns for some time now, particularly with
lifestyle diseases topping the chart. The
ongoing global pandemic has only reiterated the
significance of good health, resistance power, and a
robust immune system.
Despite being aware that early diagnosis of an ailment
or detecting symptoms of diseases through routine
health check-ups prevented complications, not many
people followed it until recently.
Better health, prevention, or cure from diseases largely
depend on appropriate diagnosis and optimum
treatment. A medical practitioner can treat a patient
only when the medical diagnosis is accurate. Here is
where diagnostic and pathology centers come into the
picture. They shoulder the mammoth responsibility of
diagnosing the disease or symptoms. The COVID-19
pandemic has only added to their responsibilities and
challenges.

FISH (Fluorescence in situ hybridization), haemotology
and flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry, surgical
pathology, next-generation sequencing, and many
more.
With digital patient engagement gaining momentum,
digital pathology could be a trend in the future. The
possibilities of advanced digital pathology are being
explored. At present, booking of tests has made
standing in queues at pathology labs a thing of the
past.
However, when it comes to healthcare, trust is a
significant factor. Therefore, choosing a reliable
diagnostic center that provides the correct results is
critical, particularly with many such centers coming up
often. Some centers have worked diligently to establish
themselves as a name to reckon with.

19. Evolution of
Technology in
Pathology
and Diagnostics
Centers
The 21st century will be recognised as the century of
the digital revolution. It transformed every industry
and sector in its wake, including healthcare services
and medical sciences.
One subset of healthcare is pathology labs and diagnostics
centers. Traditionally microscopic testing-based, today’s
labs and centers have come a long way to integrate
technology into the process.
They are speedily adopting new, innovative, and advanced
digital techs. Further, pandemic pressure, consumers'
expectations, and demands are directing lab services
towards easy access platforms, enhanced quality, and
improved delivery models.
Modern labs are digitalised pathology and diagnostics
networks of new-age seamlessness. And with automation,
artificial intelligence (AI), data science, and the entire
extended reality (XR) phenomenon taking shape, they are
fast becoming futuristic smart labs.
For example, you had to visit these labs when you needed
to get a test done. The practice is still largely followed.
17 | December 2021 | www.insightssuccess.in
20. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and thanks to
technology, testing at home is emerging as the new delivery
model.
It is not only convenient but is also vital in such uncertain
times of new Coronavirus variants coming up regularly. In
fact, very soon, it will be the future of clinical pathology
labs and diagnostic centers.
Modern Labs: The Evolution
A recent study report titled, ‘Digital Transformation in
Labs’, from Accenture found out some interesting numbers.
Those numbers reveal the state of digitalisation adopted by
life sciences companies into their lab’s R&D and quality
control processes.
According to the report, 60% of the surveyed companies are
going digital, 37% are in the piloting stage, 13% are on the
scaling-up level, and 10% are already using digital techs
widely.
Modern labs and centers dramatically transform the way
tests are conducted and how biopharma products are
created. The entire focus is on process validation, new assay
development, new tech evaluation, including R&D, and
knowledge management.
The fields under the focus are Genomics and Proteomics.
Such evolved innovations and advanced tech concepts will
be hugely beneficial for patients and clinicians as well.
For example, take R&D. The current evolution makes
previously complex, miniaturised and inaccessible assays a
standard template. It gets automated too. Similarly, in
quality control, the emerging use of extended reality (XR)
will become a common practice. This ensures smooth tech
transition, professional training, and technical support for
new methods. Lab transformation is the first step in
creating an ecosystem of the digital diagnostic network. It
will enable an interconnected healthcare industry where
data and information, and innovations can be shared.
Innovations like portable point-of-care (POC) devices: The
new ones are minimally invasive, and specimen collection
techniques have improved beyond imagination. Their user-
friendliness is due to the advancements in microprocessor-
based analysers and disposable test cartridges.
Again, a lab redefining model is that of home-based testing.
Gone are the days that lab visits are mandatory. Today you
can test yourself with easy-to-use, inexpensive, and over-
the-counter (OCT) purchasable home test kits for simpler
and milder tests; and/or can opt for home-delivered and
collected, on-demand tests.
The entire process is decentralised. Here, patients provide
manual test results or willingly agree to be a part of shared
data-monitoring systems. The time is not too far away when
digitally linked portable, hand-held biometric devices for
home use or implanted microchips will automatically
update the important data and information into patient’s
medical records. Such records then will be shared with
healthcare, diagnostics, and insurance providers.
Futuristic Smart Labs: The Revolution
Conceptually, futuristic smart labs are already envisioned.
They are completely patient-centric and give a personalized
experience. They encourage patients to actively participate
in their healthcare by seamlessly integrating at-home
diagnostics into their medical regime.
As technology has redefined our personal and professional
lives, a futuristic, quality-driven, digital attitude to labs and
centers’ operations is the need of the hour. A lab that is
easily accessible, completely convenient, which offers
unprecedented experience and reliability is the future lab.
You can foretell a harmonized and state-of-the-art clinical
diagnostics system. It will be facilitating the testing ability
for clinical chemistry, immunoassay, clinical microbiology,
serology, clinical microscopy, point of care, haematology,
transfusion, cytopathology and molecular diagnostics.
Industry’s testing paradigms are under further
transformation due to a series of tech advancements. It will
enhance access, quality, speed, efficiency, and scalability. It
will be a complete health-help-guide-care for patients.
The healthcare industry recognizes the role the pathology
labs and diagnostics centres can play. They can be a kind of
clinical decision engine. It will help patients to conduct
home-based tests. And it will facilitate healthcare givers to
interpret results accurately, diagnose accordingly and
monitor patients quickly.
The aim is to enable a novel generation of med-tech which
carries its innovations into people’s homes. And such a
diagnostic continuum will envisage a genuinely
streamlined, accessible, inclusive, and omnipresent
healthcare vision.

people are taking healthcare
very seriously. They are more
conscious about the quality of
healthcare they are getting rather than
the costs. Quality of healthcare
depends upon three factors: immediate
testing/check-up, accurate diagnosis
and results, and the best suitable
treatment.
As people are already more conscious,
when it comes to their and their
family's health, they will go for a quick
check-up. Now comes the second most
important factor, which is diagnosis
and results. Although doctors test and
treat the patients, they cannot
completely diagnose and check for the
results, if not provided immediately
and accurately, by the competent
pathological laboratories. And doctor's
and patient's search for a modern,
cutting edge, compassionate,

The beginning of the pandemic was
chaotic with a lack of direction for
most private healthcare providers. With
any other regular work practically at a
halt, providing with COVID and all
supporting investigations was the only
way to survive the battle and fulfilling
our responsibility as a healthcare
provider. With the infrastructure
already in place even before the
pandemic, it was only a matter of time
that we would start with COVID RT-
PCR testing in-house.
Additional equipment was procured
too, to enhance our testing capacity,
with a faster turnaround time, to assist
our clients and patients for prompt
remedial measures.
Overcoming apprehension and
ensuring the safety of the employees
was imperative, to ensure that we are
able to fulfil our duty as a healthcare
provider. This was allied with swift
procurement of safety equipment and
creating negative pressure rooms in
both testing and sampling areas. Along
with this, there was a strong backing
given to our employees, to face any
adverse eventuality.
What would you like to advise the
young generation of entrepreneurs
and enthusiasts who want to become
a part of the industry you are
catering to?
Focus on service and quality is
imperative and cannot be compromised
at any cost. Young entrepreneurs
should keep in mind that there is no
shortcut to this, especially in the
healthcare industry. Additionally,
sensitivity to patients’ needs and
willingness to stretch yourself to serve
will help create a niche for your brand
and business.
Where do you see yourself in the
future? Kindly tell us about your
strategies for scaling your business.
We will continue to strengthen our
position in the northern suburbs of
Mumbai and strive to provide better
and more innovative services to our
patients. There is a renowned focus on
home services which include portable
X-rays and ECG. IT enhancement for
better patient engagement will play a
huge role further few years. Efforts
will also be made to improvise our
services to hospitals and other clients
to enhance better and prompt patient
care.
What is the current scenario of your
industry?
The industry today is more competitive
than ever. There are new ventures
coming in by the day and are trying to
penetrate the market by whatever
means possible. The use of IT has
enabled a more customer-centric
approach. This has led to better service
and quality and a reduction in
diagnostic costs. Preventive
diagnostics has picked up strongly with
industries and individuals becoming
more health sensitive. Covid diagnosis
too has helped tremendously with it
being made mandatory for travel and
also as a requirement before
hospitalization and medical
procedures. With molecular diagnostics
now widely available, several
diagnostic setups are exploring its
utility in infectious diseases, genetic
and cancer diagnoses.
Thanks to a wide range of information
available, consumers are now more
empowered with a wide range of
options and to make informed
decisions. Consumers are now looking
at not only service providers who are
reasonable, but also who are
recognised, have quality certifications,
provide wider services with expertise,
have an online presence and who
provide home services.
Focus on service
and quality is
imperative and
cannot be
compromised
at any cost.

27. Health-quest
India as an
Emerging Hub of
Diagnostic and Pathology Centres
n India, over a span of years, concepts of medicine and
Idiseases have changed, driven at times by remarkable
doctors, and recent developments that are powered by
prominent progress of technology.
In the initial stage, the doctors had to spend a lot of time
and effort to rectify the cause of the disease and research on
the treatment. This was a hectic task and lack of resources
made it difficult to treat the patients with felicitous and
prompt medical procedures, holding the doctors in
oppression for many years.
Over time, effective methods based on theories were
introduced, and the concept of organ-based disease resulted
in the rise of anatomical pathology. Later on, the advent of
the microscope enhanced the possibilities to diagnose organ
to tissue and cell-related health problems.
As a second millennium drew to a close, advancements in
technology improved the diagnosis from cell-based to gene-
based diseases, to medicines and its implementation in
curing these diseases, eventually advancing the treatments
and prompt medical services.

28. Diagnostics are the first line of defence and serve a
significant role in improving health and quality of life.
Impartial accessibility, affordability, and appropriate use of
advanced diagnostics are important to primary health care.
Precise diagnosis is vital for effective disease management,
and it can lead to better patient care, clinical outcomes, and
increase affordability with reduction of overall therapy cost
and help to develop antimicrobial resistance.
Indian diagnostic solutions and pathology practises are
highlighted as best in the world, in terms of quality,
affordability, accuracy, and accessibility. The Indian
manufacturers are making significant efforts to generate
cost-effective pathology and diagnostic solutions,
additionally accessible to the remote corners of the country.
Furthermore, the saturation in economic and infrastructural
growth is leading medical diagnosis services to new
avenues. New diagnostic and pathological service providers
are exploring the medical space with their conducive
business environment to bridge the gap between the
availability of pathological laboratories and their rising
demand. With these developments, doctors and medical
service providers are looking at a promising potential of
growth in diagnosis and pathological facilities.
In recent years, medical fields in India are making intensive
use of digital imaging, allowing technological
improvements in hardware and software, as a result, digital
microscopy became an essential tool in surgical and digital
pathology. Digital microscopy is allowing the creation of a
digital version of glass slides, which can be dynamically
accessed on the computer screens and further can be
navigated and magnified for precise rectification.
Laboratory and tissue-based diagnosis is augmenting their
capability in providing a safe guide for therapy. Increased
imaging capabilities are allowing pathologists to share
information on tissue-based diagnosis. Digital pathology
holds the potential to enhance diagnostic accuracy, working
efficiency, and integrate images in information systems.
Pathologists sharing the information of histopathology,
disease and the laboratory-related molecular process is
being an integrator between the information underlying the
biochemical and cellular process to rectify a patient’s
disease, symptoms, and complications.
Moreover, automatic image analysis has many potential
advantages which include reducing interobserver
divergence, enhancing consistency, in developing and
evaluating new effective treatments revolutionizing the care
of patients with chronic diseases. The image analysis and
computer-assisted diagnosis tools in clinical uses are
empowering pathologists to become efficient, precise, and
irreducible computing analytical biomarkers.
On the other hand, the country’s diagnostic space is
witnessing robust growth and transformation driven by
increased awareness of preventive health. People are now
preferring early wellness testing powered by an efficient
and precise diagnosis as it increases the chance of a positive
outcome. General pathology is increasing by 20 per cent
and specialized pathology like biopsy, oncology, and
genetics is subsequently growing by 30 to 35 per cent.
The diagnostic space is catalysing this transformation as it
provides affordable and quality healthcare to the patients. It
also allows the people living in rural areas to access these
diagnostic solutions and embrace the efficient services
related to diagnosis and pathology.
The diagnostics space is witnessing a drastic change in the
last 20 years and rising healthcare spendings, increasing
demand for preventive healthcare, advancements in
diagnostic are being the primary growth drivers. There are
digital and technological innovations driving the growth of
the diagnostics industry.
Additionally, major diagnostics and pathology laboratories
and companies are marketing their services through online
campaigns to provide diversified service offerings, quality,
and testing facilities. Their campaigns include healthcare
camps and the promotion of preventive and wellness test
packages.
The outlook for the diagnostics industry in India is
favourable for the growth driven by rapid technological
advancements happening in the healthcare industry. These
advancements are allowing doctors to rely on the evidence
and provide precise pathological treatment. Besides,
pathology labs are offering their patients to opt for
diagnostic packages as per their requirements.
These factors are providing immense opportunities for the
development and evaluation of new and shrewd treatments
beneficial towards patients and are composing India as an
emerging hub of diagnostics and pathology centres.

Our inexpensive and personalized
home collection service PREMIER
HOME CARE, a one-stop solution for
patients, is one of its important
characteristics. A user-friendly,
technology-driven platform that allows
patients to make decisions based on
time, comfort, location, and turnaround
time. Patients also have the option of
having samples taken in the comfort of
their own homes by a skilled
phlebotomist.
We assist firms via Health Screening;
consultants can tailor packages to a
specific company's needs in order to
improve efficiency and quality of life.
We provide reasonable pricing and
personalized corporate accounts with
several payment forms and wellness
packages for corporates with a
minimum of 10 workers up to 1000
employees, recognizing the need of the
hour. This includes premium diagnostic
services, a corporate level report for
the Human Resources (HR) division
that captures their employees' health
status and highlights special cases that
may require immediate attention or
supervision.
Patients get a procedure that is tailored
to their preferences. They can acquire

32. and installing/using the HOME CARE
Service. We provide all pertinent
information, such as pricing, quality,
certifications, and normal return time.
Patients can then pick when they
would want to get home care. Patients
can arrange home sample collection
requests with our PREMIER HOME
CARE team at a time and date that is
convenient for them. The request is
forwarded to phlebotomists who work
in the region. Based on their
availability, the phlebotomist approves
the request. In addition, the
phlebotomist will arrive at the patient's
house on time to take the sample in a
safe and sanitary manner and transfer it
to the nearest PHC.
The sample collecting method is
technology-driven, and samples are
transported in a specifically built box
with bar-coded tubes, ensuring
exceptional sample quality and
accurate findings. Our reports are also
available via mobile apps and websites,
as we live in the digital age and use the
virtual world. Customers can get
complete reports as soon as they are
made available online. After the billing
is completed, the patient will receive
an SMS with an id and password to
access the report, which will be
available for viewing 24 hours a day,
seven days a week. Patients do not
need to be concerned about obtaining
an online report because they will
receive an SMS notification once the
report has been published to the
website/mobile app.
Quality principles underpin all
elements of PHC's services, including:
• To be the patient and healthcare
provider of choice, providing a
patient-centered service while
continuing to satisfy the needs of
local and hospital-based
• professionals, our healthcare
partners, and all patients.
• By offering instant diagnoses, we
can strengthen our speedy access
and communication capabilities.
• To efficiently utilize assets by
making the most of patient care
settings, maximizing the patient
and referring doctor experience,
and improving access to service
availability.
• Maintaining a culture of clinical
best practice throughout the
business while assuring all team
members' personal and
professional growth.
Please brief us about the
infrastructure of PHC.
The head processing center is spread
out over two levels and covers an area
of 8000 square feet, with a separate
lounge dedicated to corporate and
association clients. The lab is ideally
positioned in the city's center, and it is
well-connected to the city's other 27
facilities via online reporting. A
capable staff of 220 technicians
manages it.
How do you ensure that patients
receive the finest treatment?
Our continuous investment in high-
quality equipment guarantees that
patients have access to treatments
comparable to those offered by premier
worldwide medical centers. It
continues to assess medical equipment
demands and invests in new
technologies when enhanced
modalities or newer and better
equipment are identified. The
organization guarantees that all
employees have the appropriate
training and operational skills to ensure
that patients receive the finest possible
results from the procedure.
Employees get personalized reports
detailing their overall health, including
physical, social, and emotional well-
being. PHC organizes presentations by
industry experts to raise awareness and
advice staff based on the reports. With
a variety of corporate healthcare
programmers, the firm is dedicated to
keeping employees and children in
good health so that they may be more
productive. It also provides on-site
ECG, PFT, and eye testing to
corporations in addition to wellness
initiatives. PHC also performs health
check-ups in schools/colleges, where
the focus is on conducting routine
check-ups and recording health
conditions unique to the requirements
of growing children in order to nurture
the minds and bodies of future
generations.
PHC has built up clinical labs in newly
created hospitals as well as managed
"in-hospital" clinical laboratories in
existing hospitals, to conduct onsite
testing as per the hospital's
requirements, using the full Hospital
Lab Management (HLM) model. In
laboratory services, it takes a 360-
degree approach.
How is technology helping PHC
grow?
Staff training and technology adoption
go hand in hand at PHC. A significant
investment in employee education is a
key value within the practice. To
maintain a competitive advantage, the
corporation examines its equipment
portfolio on a regular basis and seeks
out new technology. Assessing and
extending service sites to suit the
demands of any predicted population
expansion is part of future planning.

Where do you PHC in the future?
Kindly tell us about your strategies
for scaling your business.
We have received several awards
during the course of our lengthy
existence and development. BioRad
and Silicon India 2019, to mention two
recent prizes, were both applauded for
their great performance. The growth
over the last four decades will continue
to be a key factor in the future. We
want to expand to 100 branches across
Tamil Nadu by 2022, with the best-in-
class 40 laboratories from around the
state. We're getting ready for the
future. PHC is expanding its capacity
to include over 2500 different types of
studies, allowing for early detection
and prevention of health problems.
Rede ning Leadership
Pradeep Chakravarthy J, the Managing Director of PHC, is a hardworking individual.
Pradeep's father handed over the management to him in 2000, and since then, he has
worked relentlessly and formed partnerships with a number of medical institutions. As a
consequence, PHC is currently one of the best diagnostic centers in the state, serving over
40 sites. Despite the fierce competition in the business, he has managed to put PHC on the
map by supplying high-quality medical technology.
His persistence and futuristic approach enabled the common man to get excellent
diagnosis, which was previously costly for individuals of all classes, thanks to his
ambition to make healthcare accessible and cheap to the public. All of his business efforts
have one purpose in mind: to improve healthcare availability and cost. Silicon India
named him the 'Pioneering Med-Tech Savant' in appreciation of his remarkable leadership
abilities.
