The common change experience
• Change management is usually driven from the
top, down to those below
• We are told why change is necessary and then
we are told how change is going to happen
• The benefits (and the threats) of change are sold
to us so that we can reach a rational decision to
accept it
• Change management is essentially about
attempting to control the change process with
various tools and mechanisms

• Working ‘against’ the hierarchy
• Lower rank = lower formal organisational
impact
• Lesser visibility makes it hard to be seen
• You have to build credibility
• You may not be in a decision making role
• You may not have permission to change
• You have no mandate
• It’s not about you!
