Meaning of dystopian
meaning of DYSTOPIAN is of, relating to, or being an imagined world or society in which
people lead dehumanized, fearful lives
4
Characterstics of Dystopian Fiction
Government Control
Government plays a big role in dystopian literature. Generally, there is either no government or an
oppressive ruling body.
In George Orwell’s 1984, the world is under complete government control. The fictional dictator Big Brother
enforces omnipresent surveillance over the people living in the three inter-continental superstates remaining
after a world war.
2.Technological Control:
Advanced science and technology in dystopian works go beyond tools for improving everyday life—
technology is often depicted as a controlling, omnipresent force and is often used as a fear-mongering
tactic.
Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, written in 1932, explores the danger of technology. The ruling World
State uses powerful conditioning technologies to control reproduction and citizens’ actions.
5
‐ 3.Environmental Disaster:
‐
Dystopian novels are often set in places that are
inhabitable, have been destroyed, or are preparing for
destruction.
‐ 4.Survival:
‐ The oppressive powers and destruction in dystopian
worlds often leave the inhabitants to fend for themselves.
5. Loss of Indivilism
‐ How should the needs of society as a whole compare to individual
needs? Many dystopian futures depict the dangers of conformity.
‐
Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, written in 1953, follows a
fireman whose job is to burn books. Because of the censorship of
books, this future society has increased interest in technology and
entertainment—and an inability to think freely and creatively.

Government control in 1984
Ss the novel Genre is dystopian it must be deals with the
characterstics of the Government control. As we saw that there
people are control by the government.in the scene of two
minutes hates it describe that people of Oceania are controlled
by the Government or The leader the big brother.
‐ Technological control in the novel
in the novel it is seen that the people
of Oceania are controlled by the
technology like on the television
screen continues the picture is used to
control the people and because of this
people get fear that Big Brother is
watching us and as they realised it they
control them selves so by this way the
technological control is shown in the
novel.
8
‐ Environmental Disaster
‐ Basically most of the dystopian novels are deals with
this characteristics in which the place in which all
settings are done is destroyed At last the same kind
Situation has happened.the Oceania is destroyed. As
well as the life of Julia and Winston are also became
dangerous.
9
‐ Survival
‐ Every human has the desire to find meaning in their life. In
the novel 1984 the party attempts to eliminate any such
desires. However, about midway through the novel it seems
as though Winston and Julia decide that in order to survive
these desires must be fulfilled. Although this idea may
seem to contradict the idea of following every party rule in
order to avoid being vaporized it is still a method of
personal survival
10
Loss of individualism:
In 1984 There is a idea of loss of individualism, there Is
no freedom to thinking also, and that’s why Winston is
written in his diary about his thought but the diary is
also hiding in the place where no one can finding
it.Because in the state of big brother there is no freedom
to think if you are thinking about something it became
thought crime. In short there is loss of individualism.
11
‐ Conclusion :
‐ So to Sum up the novel we get the idea of novel I basically focused on all of the
characterstics of dystopian fiction and that’s why it known as dystopian novel of
20th-century literature.
