3. Letter from the Minister
Dear Friends
This is the month when we celebrate our 75th
Anniversary!
Alistair reminded the Elders at our May meeting of those first 35 people
who had the vision to plant a church here in the village of Hayes, and of
the strength of dedication, vision and faith they had. Just 35 people
walked forward in faith to make this church a reality, not just in bricks
and mortar, but in people and in service; a church that would serve all
people of all denominations and none, one that would welcome everyone
who came through the door. And for 75 years we have done exactly
that – we have held the vision and walked the path and been God’s
church in this place.
We rightly celebrate our history, and hope many will come and visit this
Anniversary Weekend, from Friday 8th June to Sunday 10th June, when
we will be open with a Flower Festival and with our Historical Documents
on display.
Anniversary celebrations are not just about looking backwards, but about
being in the present and looking to the future. We have much to
celebrate in this special year, and much more to look forward to in our
future. As we work together to seek God’s way, He will hear our
prayers and lead us forward in service to the community around us.
75 years ago those 35 people were given the vision to build this church –
what might the next 75 years hold?
We can be sure it will be exhilarating!
Sue

Bethlehem Arab Society for Rehabilitation (BASR)
I
recently visited Israel and went to Bethlehem where I was
privileged to go to the Centre which was founded in 1960 as one of
Leonard Cheshire Homes. Nowadays it is a non profit, non
government organisation that is nationally recognised for
comprehensive medical and rehabilitation services it renders to
beneficiaries from different parts of Palestine, particularly those with
disabilities regardless of gender, age, religion or social class.
BASR has worked progressively upon it's commitment to enhance the
overall quality of life of persons with disabilities and other vulnerable
groups inspired by it's mission for their total inclusion into all aspects of
community life. Since it's inception BASR has diligently developed
innovative programmes and services that meet the emerging needs
of the Palestinian Community.
I wish to propose that for the year 2012/2013 we support this
organisation as our Mission Abroad. The people working there do so
much good work, many are Christians but nobody is ever turned
away be they Jew or Muslim "Every Patient is First and Foremost a
Human Being". I plan to bring this before the Church Meeting on
22nd July for members’ approval
For those who wish to know more I have a brochure which I received
on my visit detailing the work carried out.

From The Nottinghamshire Almanac for June 1841.
The garden now unfolds a beauteous scene,

And silver lakes reflect the beaming day,
And chrystal streams in gurgling fountains play.

17. Iris Joan Williams
21st May 1929 - 15th April 2012
-------------------------
Iris was born in Whitechapel Hospital and lived for a short while in
Bethnal Green before moving with her family to Chingford, where she
grew up with her two younger sisters, Olive and Jean. After leaving
school she worked as a GPO telephonist, which helped her to shake
off her Cockney accent! It was whilst working at the GPO that she
met a Teddy-boy named Donald Williams, a go-ahead chap who
soon became her husband. Donald’s retail business brought them
South of the Thames. They lived for a while above one of his shops in
Crofton Park, before moving to Mead Way, Hayes, by which time
their two children had arrived - Ian and Hazel who, with their mother,
came to Hayes Free Church.
It was about this time that Iris and Donald joined the local Lions Club,
through which Iris was introduced to charitable causes of various sorts,
which she continued to support for most of the rest of her life. One of
the earliest of these was the Multiple Sclerosis Club, at that time
based in Coney Hall, where she took her wheelchair-bound members
out on trips and organised parties for them. At the Bromley Cassette
she helped in the mailing of their talking local newspapers for the
blind, and for several years she worked for KAB (The Kent Association
for the Blind), helping in a variety of ways, including acting as a
dance-partner for blind members. At Hayes Fee Church she teamed
up with Ivy Mant and Joan Carter to help run the Over-60’s Club
(which later became the Friendship Club), a very happy venture.
Sadly, in late middle age, Iris’ marriage broke up and she moved to
Downham. For a while, whilst she continued to drive a car, she
seemed happy enough and was able to maintain all her social and
charitable activities; but eventually deteriorating sight and other
health problems forced her to give up driving, and this greatly
impeded her out-going life-style. Reluctantly she agreed to move to
a retirement flat at Blenheim Court, where she could benefit from
more frequent social activity. However, only a few days before she
was to move she suffered a massive stroke, which not only
hospitalised her but left her both frail and nearly blind. After four
months she moved into the flat, but she never settled there, and life
became increasingly difficult. A relapse led to another spell in
hospital, but she was looking forward to moving to another, more
suitable, nursing home which Ian and Hazel had found for her when,
on the day of the scheduled move, she had another stroke from
which she never recovered. She died in Orpington Hospital on April
15th. Continued on Page 16 ........

We shall all remember her for her cheerful, chirpy personality, small in
body, but large and caring in heart. Our thoughts and prayers are
with her family, who loved and cared for her so deeply.

24. Final Thought
Prayer
God, we commit to talking and praying together,
questioning and reflecting together,
hoping and dreaming together.
Give us vision and confidence now
to find our way forward as your people
following your vision and walking in your way
