3. Letter from the Minister
Dear Friends
Our belief in One God: Father, Son and Holy
Spirit, is given to us freely – a gift we can accept
or deny. We are shortly to celebrate Easter,
a time of great joy and the highlight of our faith; a time when we
remember the sacrifice made willingly for us so that we might know
the presence of God for eternity. A sacrifice we can have faith in,
believe in, and accept – or we can ignore it, deny it, and pretend it
didn’t happen. But if we accept it, then we must respond to it; not
responding to such a gift is surely to deny it.
What should our response be? How can we show our acceptance of
the gift so freely given?
A phrase I have used before is one of ‘being Easter People’, being
people who live out faith in our Resurrected Lord all year round, not
just at Easter. And part of our response to Easter must be to tell
others of the wonderful gift God waits to bless them with – the gift
of faith. A priceless gift that blesses all who receive it, for as that
well known verse from John 3:16 tells us: “God so loved the world
that he gave his only Son, that whosoever believes in Him will not
perish but have eternal life.”
God so loves each one of us that He gave us His only Son, and we
surely cannot ignore that gift, any more than we can ignore His love.
Sharing such a wonderful gift is not as hard as we make it out to be;
our natural British reserve holds us back from being as open and
honest about our faith as we should be, prevents our sharing the
good news.
As Easter People, let us make the promise to tell one person this
month about God’s love and God’s promise to each of us – for He will
always be with us, eternally.
Sue

10. Christmas Tree Charities proposed for 2012.
At the February Church meeting the following charities were proposed.
Please give these your consideration and come to the Church meeting
on 22nd April to vote for the charity of your choice.
Anthony Nolan is a UK charity, but does not
have a local Bromley branch. It focuses on
leukaemia and Hematopoietic stem cell
transplantation. It manages and recruits donors
to one of the three bone marrow registers in the United Kingdom.
It also carries out research to help make bone marrow transplants
more effective.
The charity is named after Anthony Nolan (born 1971, died 1979),
who did not suffer from leukaemia but from Wiskott-Aldrich
syndrome, a rare inherited blood disorder.[2] It was founded by
Anthony's mother Shirley (1942–2002) in 1974 as the "Anthony
Nolan Register". Initially based at the Westminster Children's
Hospital, it moved to St Mary Abbot's Hospital in 1978 and to its
present offices, laboratory and research institute in north London, in
the grounds of the Royal Free Hospital. The charity was renamed in
2001 to the "Anthony Nolan Trust". and again in 2010 to "Anthony
Nolan".
Kent Association for the Blind
KAB has six local rehabilitation teams throughout the
region, three based at KAB Sight Centres in Maidstone,
Canterbury and Bromley, and three based in offices in Gravesend,
Dover and Medway.
All six teams provide comprehensive rehabilitation services,
mainly on an outreach basis in services users' own homes.
Specialist services for people with learning disabilities are also
available.
The Bromley centre is located in Blyth Road, Bromley. As well as
being a base for rehabilitation teams, our Sight Centres provide
additional services. These include: Resource Rooms displaying a
range of equipment and new technology, Low vision clinics offering
assessment and provision of low vision aids, Skills training courses
for people with all levels of sight impairment. Awareness Training
courses for carers and professional workers, Volunteer
Coordinators are based in each office.
8
11. Samaritans is a confidential emotional support
service for anyone in the UK and Ireland.
The service is available 24 hours a day for people
who are experiencing feelings of distress or
despair, including those which may lead to suicide.
Volunteers offer support by responding to phone calls, emails and
letters. Alternatively people can drop in to a branch to have a face
to face meeting. Our purpose is to: enable persons who are
experiencing feelings of distress or despair, including those who
may be at risk of suicide, to receive confidential emotional support
at any time of the day or night from appropriately trained
Samaritans in order to improve their emotional health and to reduce
the incidence of suicide; and promote a better understanding in
society of suicide, suicidal behaviour and the value of expressing
feelings which may otherwise lead to suicide or impaired emotional
health.
A locally registered charity, which supports the
specialist NHS Cancer and Leukaemia
Treatment Unit in the Princess Royal University
Hospital, Farnborough, Kent.
The Unit is run by a team of dedicated doctors,
nurses and support staff. The Unit provides patients with a
comfortable environment in which to receive care from the
professional, multi-disciplined team who address their symptom
control and pain relief. NHS budget policy dictates the service levels
and equipment availability in the Chartwell Unit. There are shortfalls
which The Chartwell Cancer Trust helps to overcome.
OUR AIM
To increase the staff to patient ratio and help to provide the best
available equipment when treating patients with cancer and
leukaemia related illnesses. The Trust currently funds an additional
doctor and an extra healthcare Assistant. Help us to continue that
work.
The dates for the 2012 Christmas Tree Festival are
Friday 30th November to Sunday 9th December

13. PRESENTATION FOR MARCH 2012 CHURCH PARADE RE GOATS
The Scout Association has 3 Partnership Awards that Section members
can achieve. The Awards encourage a Section to link up with
another Section within their own Group or another Group or
organization on a project to help other people. They could also link
up with a Partner outside of Scouting e.g. UNICEF.
The Cubs chose the International Friendship Award (IFA). During one of
our meetings last term we decided to raise money by having a home
made cake stall to buy a goat for a family possibly in Africa. We
asked the Beavers to join us; all Cubs and Beavers who took part
would earn their IFA. For our October Church Parade the Cubs &
Beavers made cakes to sell after the Service. Those who were unable
to make cakes, raised money by doing some small jobs for family
members – one cleaned his brothers shoes for a week! I am pleased
to confirm that ALL Cubs & Beavers who were with me last term took
part. £181.00 was raised selling cakes & a further £47.50 from Cubs
and Beavers who did ‘odd jobs’, making a grand total of £228.50 !!
The initial idea was to involve OXFAM. However, they were unable to
tell me when they would be able to purchase any goats or which
country they would go to. By chance, another Scout Leader told me
that her friend Karen was involved in helping to educate children via
GAMBLE - ‘Gambia Building Links in Education’ & their school had
been thinking of purchasing a goat but could not afford to do so. I
contacted Karen who explained that she and her husband often
travelled out to the school in Gambia and would put my proposal to
the head teacher that our Cubs & Beavers wanted to purchase a
goat for them, possibly two, a male and female – he was absolutely
delighted. This was before I realized how much we had raised; we
could buy a goat (slightly more expensive as she is pregnant), her two
kids & some feed. We have some money left over to go towards
another goat when the school is ready, or, in some other way to
benefit the schoolchildren. The school built a goat-shed and the
schoolchildren are helping to look after them. By being at the school
the goats are protected & cared for properly - if the goats were
given to the families they would probably be stolen. When I was
talking to Karen, it was decided that the Cubs could name a male
goat & the Beavers a female goat. Lots of names were suggested.
They had to be names that the Gambian schoolchildren could relate
to. Amy was decided for the female, & Ben & Bill for the two male
kids. At the head teacher’s request a photo of all Cubs & Beavers
involved will be given to him to show the schoolchildren who had
bought the goats for them.

16. NOTICES -
SATURDAY 28th APRIL 9.30 – 10.30 am
This is an opportunity to meet together in the Church for
prayer and reflection, to seek God’s guidance for our
ongoing work of worship and witness.
For those who cannot manage a Saturday morning there
will be another opportunity to meet with the same
intention on WEDNESDAY 2nd MAY 6.15 – 7.15 pm
In this our 75th Anniversary Year we need to look to the
future and it is hoped a good number will come to meet
in fellowship on one or other of these dates – or both.
Talent Exhibition
As we celebrate our Church 75th Anniversary,
let us give thanks for our many God-given talents.
On Saturday, 13th October we are having a special
exhibition. Anything from composing, to knitting, art,
poetry to woodwork.
You have plenty of time to create something
wonderful, or you can dig out the lace or oil painting
that you made years ago and you'd like it to see the
light of day again.
Please ask for a letter about this event and as you
create, pop more money in to your little green box
and return it when full. Take another which can also
be filled.
Thank you
Mavis Righini.
A Bible study group is beginning in the
small hall on Thursdays from 2.30 – 3.30 pm
beginning on Thursday 26th April.
Please sign the sheet at the back of the
church if you plan to attend.

17. EXTRA BOARD
Holy Week – Holy Land!!
The group, including friends from Hayes Free Church, Emmanuel
West Wickham, Elmers End Free Church and others who went on
the pilgrimage to the Holy Land in November 2011 met for a
reunion in February 2012 and we watched an excellent DVD of the
trip put together by Alan Deverson (a member at Emmanuel) with
his usual aplomb and humour.
We thought the members of the wider churches may wish to see the
DVD and so it will be shown at Emmanuel, West Wickham on the
Wednesday of Holy Week (4th April) at 8pm. It will be free of
charge but there will be a retiring collection for the Bethlehem Arab
Rehabilitation Centre which we visited during our time in Israel. The
Centre is to be Emmanuel’s Overseas Charity for 2012/13.
Especially if you have not been to Israel before, this film will be a
good introduction and insight to the places where the events of Holy
Week and Jesus’ ministry took place. Places you may like to visit for
yourselves in the future?

around the word “Marriage”, what it means, and who it is for.
If any of you would like to take part in an open discussion on this,
please sign the sheet at the back of the church, indicating which
time would suit you best.

20. London Marathon 2012
Jenny Carr's son, Phillip, is running the London Marathon in April in
support of Tommy's, the baby charity. Phillip decided to run the 26.2
miles after his cousin and his wife, Michael and Robby, had their first
baby, Rosie, stillborn in April last year, and wanted to support other
families in similar situations.
Tommy's goal is to reduce the incidence of miscarriage, premature
birth and stillbirth which cause so much suffering to more than a
quarter of all parents across the UK. Through medical research and
information campaigns, Tommy's seek to minimise the risks of
pregnancy.
Happily, Michael and Robby gave birth to a second daughter, Cherry
Rose, on 1st March this year.
If you feel able to support the work of Tommy's by sponsoring Phillip,

At Easter time both hot-cross buns and Easter biscuits remind us of the
sacrifice Jesus made for us. Maybe we can think of some different
ways that we can be like spice in a needy world - preserving
standards, healing hurts and giving people a new taste for the things
of God.

This is a short report from Karen’s Husband.
We were asked by a cub pack to buy a pair of breeding goats for
poor people in Africa.
After lots of discussion with our head teacher we realised that it would
be necessary to also supply food for the goats for them to eat until
the first sale of a goat which would buy more food & give some funds
to help the poor children afford to attend school. Initially we were
looking for a male & female to breed & produce kids. We went to
look at available goats. Some did not look very healthy & others
looked old. Then we were introduced to someone who was selling a
female goat. When we saw her we found that she was very healthy &
obviously able to breed as we were told that she had recently had 2
male kids. He wanted more money than we had, as we still had to
buy a male. We were then told that the kids were included in the sale
& she was already expecting more. This sounded like a good
proposition as we would have 3 goats & hopefully when the kids are
born we would have another female. If not we could sell one of the
males & buy a female with the proceeds. So we decided that this is
what we would do & agreed a price with the owner.
The next day I went with Ebrima, who works in our school, to collect the
goat. We stopped to buy a short length of rope . It was quite hard to
catch her and eventually the owner enticed her to come and eat
some food. He grabbed her & slipped the rope around her neck.
We shook hands with the previous owner & left with the goat in tow.
She seemed quite happy to come, but I asked Ebrima about her kids
& he said not to worry about it. Sure enough, as soon as we went out
of sight of the kids they came scampering after us & followed us all
the way back to the school. We put them in a nice large airy shed for
their new home, gave them some food & water & they soon settled in.
When I left to come back to the UK three days later they were very
happy, had settled in & would come towards us for a stroke. We
would now like some names for them please. We are returning to
The Gambia in March & will then let you know how they are. It would
be good if we could have a picture of your Cub Pack to take with us
so that the Gambian children could see who provided the Goats.
The man in the picture feeding the goat is the previous owner, the
man leading her away is Ebrima who works at the school & the third
picture is of Amy and her 2 kids Ben & Bill. (The pictures are on page 7)

23. OUR WELL-BEING
---------------------------------
Some common winter ailments
The following are the last in the list. Hopefully, with spring in the air we
will not suffer from them.
Sore Throats
Almost always caused by a virus, sore throats can nevertheless be
aggravated by going quickly from a warm indoor environment to the
icy-cold outdoors.
Gargling with warm, salty water is a quick way of making a sore throat
feel better. It doesn't kill the infection but has anti-inflammatory
properties that can soothe the pain. Dissolve a teaspoon of salt in a
glass of cooling boiled water.
Heart Attacks
Obviously this is quite a rare one, but heart attacks do become more
common in the colder months - when the heart is working harder to
keep your body warm and blood pressure can be higher.
If at risk, stay indoors on cold days and wrap up warm when you do
go out with a hat and scarf.
Flu
This can range from being highly unpleasant to being a killer, with
pregnant women and the elderly being particularly at-risk.
If you think you might be vulnerable to flu see your GP and ask about
getting the flu jab. It lasts a year and gives good protection against
flu. The vaccine is updated each year as flu bugs adapt and the
previous vaccine decreases in effectiveness.

26. Card fraud telephone scam
Important message from your local Safer Neighbourhoods team
-------------------------------------
In the news (07/03/12) it was stated that card fraud has fallen to its lowest level in 11
years. This is positive news. However, we want to highlight the need to be ever
vigilant to new and existing card fraud scams such as the one detailed below.
How does this scam work?
You receive a telephone call from someone claiming to be from your bank.
He or she will say their systems have spotted a fraudulent payment on your card or
that your card is due to expire and needs replacing.
You may be asked to ring back using the telephone number on the back of your
card - which further convinces you that the call is genuine. However, the caller keeps
the line open at their end so, when you make the call, you are unknowingly
connected straight back to the fraudster.
Then, by seeming to offer assistance, the fraudster tries to gain your trust. In most
cases you are asked to ‘cancel’ your existing card or ‘activate’ or ‘authorise’ a
replacement card by keying your PIN into the handset of your phone.
The fraudster then poses as a bank representative who agrees to collect your card
from your home, sometimes offering you a replacement card, which is a fake.
In some cases a genuine courier company is hired to pick up the card from your
home address. The victim will have been asked to place the card into an envelope
ready for collection. Once they have your card and PIN the fraudster uses them to
spend your money.
A variation of the scam involves the fraudster ringing a prospective victim and
claiming to be from the police – again with the aim of going to the victim’s home to
collect the card and PIN.
What can I do to avoid being a victim of this scam?
· Neither your bank nor the police would ever ring you and state that they are
coming to your home to pick up your card, so never hand it over to anyone who
comes to collect it.
· Your bank will NEVER ask you to authorise anything by entering your PIN into the
telephone handset.
· NEVER share your PIN with anyone – the only times you should use your PIN is at a
cash machine or when you use a chip and PIN machine in a shop / restaurant.
I think I might have been a victim of this scam - what should I do?
If the criminals are nearby ring the Police immediately on 999, otherwise report the
crime to your local Police via 101.
If you think you have been the victim of a fraud or scam of this nature you should
also call your bank or card company immediately

28. Final Thought
Easter blessing
How beautiful is the blossom
spilling from the tree,
the hidden primrose
and the bluebell
ringing out the news.
He is risen
he is alive
we shall live
for evermore.
The dark winter is past,
the slow, cold, foggy days are over.
May the warmth of your resurrection
touch our hearts and minds
as the warmth of the sun
blesses our bodies.
