8. BEAUTY
John 3:16 "For God loved the world so much that He gave His one
and only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish
but have eternal life."
John 12:27-28 "Now My soul is deeply troubled. Should I pray,
'Father, save Me from this hour'? But this is the very reason I
came! Father, bring glory to Your name." Then a voice spoke from
heaven, saying, "I have already brought glory to My name, and I
will do so again."
Teazer: What is beauty? We need to have a proper answer to this question, especially as we endeavor to live holy lives in a multi faceted world.
Quote: “The glorious excellencies and beauty of God will be what will for ever entertain the minds of the saints, and the love of God will be their everlasting feast.” Jonathan Edwards
“All Beauty comes from the most beautiful One”
First, let’s begin by stating the problem. Defining beauty is like nailing Jell-O to a wall. We have all heard the dictum, “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder,” and certainly there is truth in this. However, modern denial of objectivity runs to an extreme. Artist Paul Klee said, “Beauty is as relative as light and dark. Thus, there exists no beautiful woman, none at all, because you are never certain that a still far more beautiful woman will not appear and completely shame the supposed beauty of the first.”
Are we lying to ourselves when we describe something as beautiful? Is beauty a concept imposed on objects with no objective reference point? Are we left to wallow in the mud of aesthetic relativism?
“The glorious excellencies and beauty of God will be what will for ever entertain the minds of the saints, and the love of God will be their everlasting feast.” [ii]
“For as God is infinitely the greatest Being, so he is allowed to be infinitely the most beautiful and excellent; and all the beauty to be found throughout the whole creation, is but the reflection of the diffused beams of that Being who hath an infinite fulness of brightness and glory.” [iii]
So the world says true beauty comes from within, but the bible says our within is wicked and deceitful. True beauty comes from God.
The world says true beauty is in being yourself but the bible says we must lose ourselves in Him. True beauty is being lost in Him.
The world says beauty might bring happiness but happiness always brings beauty. The bible says happy are those that are persecuted, excluded and mocked. There is true beauty in the one that gives all for Christ.
