Engineering Approaches to DRR and Management
Towards Sustainable Development in the Asia-Pacific Region
• Designed for incorporating Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) planning into
leadership training, and can be applied within any number of spheres, from
city government and business, to education and non-profit work.
• 20 participants with diverse background (academia, public sector, business,
and civil society from 15 countries around the Asia-Pacific region - both from
social sciences and natural sciences) will learn about the challenges and
opportunities in relation to DRR and management.

sustainable solutions for this region, taking into consideration the
vulnerability of the region to both man-made and natural disasters.

Not just being a good leader –
Leadership for Sustainability may require the skills as below:
• Facilitation: Facilitating community participation for collaboration, identifying who’s voice is missing, and
creating a new knowledge through collaboration.
• Coordination: Bringing diverse stakeholders and mobilizing resources (fund, people, networks, materials
etc)
• Conflict resolution: Respecting and working with differences (cultures, opinions, ideas, values and
emotions).
• Translation and communication: Not language translation. But the skill to cross between different
knowledges, values, understanding and knowing to create a new knowledge for sustainable development.
• Monitoring and evaluation – skill to conduct self-reflection, institutional reflection by peer and colleagues
and external reflection by expert and participants during and after the process and to develop the
strategies for the next.
• Compassion
6. United Nations University Institute for the
Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS)
• A leading research and teaching institute based inTokyo, Japan.
• Conducting policy-oriented research and capacity development focused on
sustainability and its social, economic and environmental dimensions.
• High-level policymaking and debates, addressing priority issues for the UN
system.
• Working on three thematic areas: sustainable societies, natural capital and
biodiversity, and global change and resilience.

integrating sustainable development into postgraduate courses and curricula
• 47 member universities
• Conducting education and research programmes to respond to a wide range of
sustainable development challenge
• Two training programmes:Young Researchers’ School and Leadership Programme
8. Assignments for LP
☑ Pre-LP Assignment
• Reflection of your work/project from sustainable development/DRR perspectives
□ Group Work During LP
• Leadership for sustainability and collaboration practice: Developing a project for
DRR for sustainable development.
□ Post-LP Assignment
• Developing your strategic plan for DRR for sustainable development for short and
long terms.
9. GroupWork
• 3-4 people in a group – Pre-organised based on country balance, gender and background.
• Work together for four days (Day1-4) & group presentation on Day 5 (Fri, 29 Nov).
• Group Work aims to build your capacity to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders for DDR for
SD.
Topic: Develop a DRR for SD project
Chose the disaster related issue or problem that your group members can work on collaboratively.
Set the project context (region, country, area, culture, socio-economic situation, environment, etc)
Decide which phase of disaster management cycle you are focusing on.
Guiding questions for your discussion could be:
How is the problem or issue related to other problems?
How are the key elements of SD incorporated? –What elements should be considered to make a project effective? And who
should be involved except for the group members?
How are the empowerment approaches undertaken?
How do you facilitate the participation of multi-stakeholders and what will be the shared roles?
What will be the challenges that obstruct the project?
What will be useful resources that may enhance your project?
What practical approaches are you taking in order to make the project effective and how do you utilize in your project?
What will be the supporting mechanisms?
Etc.
10. Group work rules
• Get to know your group members and his/her background/interests around
sustainable development and DRR
• Plan the work process
• Identify and share the roles and responsibilities
• Listen rather than talk
• Respect the differences (opinions, thoughts, cultures, languages, background,
career, etc)
• Be critical not critique
11. Presentation (20 mins + 5 mins Q&A)
Presentation should contain:
(I) Project Overview
• Project title
• Background
• Key question or problem
• Aim and objectives
• Methodology
• Process / timeline
• Expected outcomes and challenges
• Measurement to overcome the possible challenges
(II) Group Work Reflection

• What was the challenge that your group faced?
• How did your group overcome the challenge?
• What is the outstanding problem?
• How do you utilse your experience at your work in your home country?
• What are the key essences to be a leadership for sustainable development?
