Husbandry
Animal Husbandry, breeding, feeding, and management
of animals, or livestock, for the production of food,
fiber, work, and pleasure. Modern methods
concentrate on one type of animal in large, efficient
farming units that generate animal products at the
highest rate of return for investment. Intensive
husbandry conditions include large numbers of animals
in small lots, enriched feed, growth stimulation by
various means, and vaccination against disease. Most
of the world’s domestic animals, however, are raised in
small units under less efficient conditions and at lower
rates of return.
Traditional husbandry practices are closely associated with the
degree of control needed over the animals that are kept and
with the uses to which they are put. Most domesticated animals
have multiple uses; for example, animals kept primarily for work
also supply milk, meat, and clothing materials. The animals and
their uses, however, are closely associated with the culture and
experience of the people who care for them. In some regions of
the world, cattle are not considered for use in the production of
food. Studies have shown that the work power, fertilizer, milk,
and the fuel from dung that the cattle provide in these regions
are more efficient animal products than meat.
Draft animals
• Domesticated animals used primarily for work,
transport, and leisure are widely distributed.
They include the horse, mule, donkey (see Ass),
ox, buffalo, camel, llama, alpaca, yak, reindeer,
and dog.
• Modern horses are thought to have descended
from one or more of three subspecies, including
the tarpan, Przewalski's wild horse, and the
European forest horse. They are still used for
draft in many countries of the world. They are
also used for controlling other types of animals,
for carrying packs, and for riding for leisure and
sport. The world population of horses is
estimated at about 56 million; approximately half
are in North and South America and Africa, and
half in Asia and Europe. Almost half of the 13
million or so mules in the world are found in Asia
and the rest is fairly evenly distributed in Africa,
North and Central America, and South America.
Of the more than 40 million donkeys, about half
are in Asia and one-fourth in Africa.
Asian Water Buffalo
Related to the African water buffalo,
yak, American bison, European bison,
and four-horned antelope, the Asian
water buffalo, Bubalus bubalis, has
been domesticated and is now found
throughout India, Asia, South America,
Europe, and southern Africa.
More information
• Camels, llamas, and alpacas are used for carrying
packs. Of about 18 million camels in the world,
approximately three-fourths are found in Africa and
the rest in Asia. The llama and alpaca are mostly
limited to small areas in South America, although their
popularity is increasing in North America. Practically all
water buffalo are found in Asia. They are used primarily
as draft animals but have potential for the production
of milk and meat. Oxen are also important draft
animals in Asia and in some parts of southeastern
Europe. Dogs are used as draft animals in Alaska and
Siberia, and are also used to control sheep and other
animal herds.
Sheep are used for wool, meat (mutton and lamb), and to a small
extent for milk. Sheep are commonly divided into three types
based on whether their wool is fine, medium, or coarse. Perhaps
the first animals to be used in husbandry, they were
domesticated in southwestern Asia about 11,000 years ago.
About 1 billion are now widely distributed throughout the world,
with the largest populations in Asia, Africa, Oceania, Europe,
South America, and the western United States. Commercial
sheep farming is usually conducted on large tracts of land,
divided into operational units containing 1,000 or more animals
per unit. Sheep are also raised as a secondary enterprise on
many small farms. They are well adapted to semiarid regions and
to land that is too steep or rough for the cultivation of crops
Swine
• Recent evidence suggests that swine were
domesticated about 9,000 years ago in several world
regions simultaneously. Worldwide population is
estimated to be more than 940 million. Approximately
half are raised in Asia, primarily in China. Europe, North
America, and South America also have large numbers.
Unlike most domestic animals, pigs are omnivorous
and compete directly with humans for many foods. In
the United States their production is concentrated in
the Midwest, where pig husbandry is based on the
conversion of corn and soybean meal into meat under
intensive conditions.
Cattle
• Modern cattle are usually divided into three types: beef, dairy, and
dual purpose, an intermediate type used for both milk and meat. It
is believed that cattle were domesticated about 8,500 years ago in
southeastern Europe, with Southeast Asia a probable second center
of domestication. The world cattle population is more than 1.4
billion, with half concentrated in Asia and South America, and the
rest in Africa, Europe, the countries of the former USSR, and the
United States. Most beef cattle are raised on large rangelands, but
following weaning, the young animals to be used for meat may be
fattened in feedlots. Dairy cattle are managed in relatively large
herds under intensive conditions near centers of dense population.
Cheese, dried milk, and other specialized products, however,
usually come from small farms with cattle set out to pasture. See

Poultry
• Poultry includes chickens, ducks, geese,
guinea fowl, peacock, pigeons, swans, and
turkeys. Each of these domesticated groups
is descended from a closely related wild bird
and was probably first developed in the
areas where the wild bird was indigenous.
World numbers are estimated at more than
15 billion chickens, about 1 million ducks,
245 million geese, and some 250 million
turkeys. Chickens are numerous in most
regions of the world. Most of the ducks are
produced in Europe and Asia and most of
the turkeys in the U.S. In the developed
countries, production units for meat and
eggs are large and intensive, with individual
birds housed singly in cages or housed
together in large numbers. Under these
conditions, one operator can care for large
numbers of birds with high labor efficiency
and good control of disease and the
environmental factors affecting production.
Peacock (bird) or Peafowl, common
name for three members of the
pheasant family. Although these birds
are more commonly called peacocks,
that name is properly applied only to
males; females are called peahens.

Indian peafowl, and the green peafowl
Fish farming
• Aquaculture, farming of aquatic organisms in fresh,
brackish or salt water. A wide variety of aquatic
organisms are produced through aquaculture, including
fishes, crustaceans, mollusks, algae, and aquatic plants.
Unlike capture fisheries, aquaculture requires
deliberate human intervention in the organisms'
productivity and results in yields that exceed those
from the natural environment alone. Stocking water
with seed (juvenile organisms), fertilizing the water,
feeding the organisms, and maintaining water quality
are common examples of such intervention.
Bee keeping • Beekeeping, also apiculture, ma
nagement of colonies of bees for
the production of honey and
other hive products and for the
pollination of crops. Beekeeping
usually refers to the husbandry
of the European honey bee, but
it may also refer to management
of other species of social bees,
such as the Indian honey bee,
the dwarf honey bee, or
stingless bees. Groups of hives
are called apiaries, and a
beekeeper may also be called an
apiarist or apiculturist.
Beekeeping
This beekeeper in Florida examines the
honeycomb of his hive. Beekeepers
wear protective clothing, including
hats, wire veils, gloves, and light-
colored fabrics, to avoid getting stung
when handling the insects. Beekeepers
must also avoid rapid movements that
may shock and enrage the bees. The
honey produced in these hives may be
used as a food sweetener, while
beeswax serves as an ingredient in
cosmetics, candles, and waterproofing
compounds.

• An ancient and widespread profession, beekeeping is believed to
have originated in the Middle East. The early Egyptians kept bees
and traded for honey and beeswax along the East African coast
several thousand years ago. Until 1851, beekeepers harvested
honey and beeswax by killing the colonies inhabiting the hives. In
that year the American apiarist Lorenzo Lorraine Langstroth
discovered the principle of “bee space”: Bees leave spaces of about
0.6 cm (about 0.23 in) between wax combs. In artificial hives, if this
space is left between adjacent comb frames and between the end
frames and the walls of the hive, each comb will remain unattached
to neighboring combs. Langstroth’s discovery made it possible to
remove individual frames from a beehive and to harvest honey and
wax without destroying the colony. It also became possible to
control disease and to maintain a larger number of colonies.
Other
animals
• Other domesticated animals of
importance include, in the cattle family,
the yak in Tibet, the mithan in India, and
the banteng in Southeast Asia. The
reindeer is important in the northern
regions of North America, Europe, and
Asia.
• Although a few specialized farms have
raised various animals (primarily mink
and foxes) for their pelts, most furs are
obtained from wild populations by
hunting and trapping. In North America,
muskrats and raccoons provide slightly
more than half the total revenue. The
former USSR was also a leading fur

Reindeer
The reindeer inhabits the far northern
reaches of Europe and Asia, as well as
North America, where the animal is
called a caribou. Although the
population of reindeer has declined,
some nomadic tribes in North Asia and
Europe and northernmost North
America still follow the herds, using
the flesh of the animals as food and
their antlers as tools and utensils.
Massive assymetrical antlers grow on
both male and female reindeer; the
female reindeer is the only type of
female deer to have antlers.

Each of these domesticated groups is descended from a closely related wild bird and was probably first developed in the areas where the wild bird was indigenous. World numbers are estimated at more than 15 billion chickens, about 1 million ducks, 245 million geese, and some 250 million turkeys. Chickens are numerous in most regions of the world. Most of the ducks are produced in Europe and Asia and most of the turkeys in the U.S. In the developed countries, production units for meat and eggs are large and intensive, with individual birds housed singly in cages or housed together in large numbers. Under these conditions, one operator can care for large numbers of birds with high labor efficiency and good control of disease and the environmental factors affecting production.   • 10. Fish farming • Aquaculture, farming of aquatic organisms in fresh, brackish or salt water. A wide variety of aquatic organisms are produced through aquaculture, including fishes, crustaceans, mollusks, algae, and aquatic plants. Unlike capture fisheries, aquaculture requires deliberate human intervention in the organisms' productivity and results in yields that exceed those from the natural environment alone. Stocking water with seed (juvenile organisms), fertilizing the water, feeding the organisms, and maintaining water quality are common examples of such intervention.
  • 11. Bee keeping • Beekeeping, also apiculture, ma nagement of colonies of bees for the production of honey and other hive products and for the pollination of crops. Beekeeping usually refers to the husbandry of the European honey bee, but it may also refer to management of other species of social bees, such as the Indian honey bee, the dwarf honey bee, or stingless bees. Groups of hives are called apiaries, and a beekeeper may also be called an apiarist or apiculturist. Beekeeping This beekeeper in Florida examines the honeycomb of his hive. Beekeepers wear protective clothing, including hats, wire veils, gloves, and light- colored fabrics, to avoid getting stung when handling the insects. Beekeepers must also avoid rapid movements that may shock and enrage the bees. The honey produced in these hives may be used as a food sweetener, while beeswax serves as an ingredient in cosmetics, candles, and waterproofing compounds.
  • 12. More information • An ancient and widespread profession, beekeeping is believed to have originated in the Middle East. The early Egyptians kept bees and traded for honey and beeswax along the East African coast several thousand years ago. Until 1851, beekeepers harvested honey and beeswax by killing the colonies inhabiting the hives. In that year the American apiarist Lorenzo Lorraine Langstroth discovered the principle of “bee space”: Bees leave spaces of about 0.6 cm (about 0.23 in) between wax combs. In artificial hives, if this space is left between adjacent comb frames and between the end frames and the walls of the hive, each comb will remain unattached to neighboring combs. Langstroth’s discovery made it possible to remove individual frames from a beehive and to harvest honey and wax without destroying the colony. It also became possible to control disease and to maintain a larger number of colonies.
  • 13. Other animals • Other domesticated animals of importance include, in the cattle family, the yak in Tibet, the mithan in India, and the banteng in Southeast Asia. The reindeer is important in the northern regions of North America, Europe, and Asia. • Although a few specialized farms have raised various animals (primarily mink and foxes) for their pelts, most furs are obtained from wild populations by hunting and trapping. In North America, muskrats and raccoons provide slightly more than half the total revenue. The former USSR was also a leading fur nation. See Fur Industry. Reindeer The reindeer inhabits the far northern reaches of Europe and Asia, as well as North America, where the animal is called a caribou. Although the population of reindeer has declined, some nomadic tribes in North Asia and Europe and northernmost North America still follow the herds, using the flesh of the animals as food and their antlers as tools and utensils. Massive assymetrical antlers grow on both male and female reindeer; the female reindeer is the only type of female deer to have antlers.
