2. WHAT IS SERVANT LEADERSHIP?
⢠SERVANT LEADERSHIP is a leadership philosophy-shares power,
puts the needs of others first and helps people develop and
perform as highly as possible
the highest type of ruler is one of whose existence the people are barely aware.
next comes one whom they love and praise.
next comes one whom they fear.
next comes one whom they despise and defy
when you are lacking in faith,
others will be unfaithful to you.
The sage is self-effacing and scanty of words.
when his task is accomplished and things have been completed,
all the people say, âwe ourselves have achieved it!
THE SERVANT-LEADER IS SERVANT FIRST." THE DESIRE TO SERVE, THE "SERVANT'S HEART-
3. ROBERT K. GREENLEAF IN 1970
"THE SERVANT-LEADER IS SERVANT FIRST... IT BEGINS WITH THE NATURAL FEELING THAT
ONE WANTS TO SERVE FIRST. THEN CONSCIOUS CHOICE BRINGS ONE TO ASPIRE TO LEAD.
THAT PERSON IS SHARPLY DIFFERENT FROM ONE WHO IS LEADER FIRST, PERHAPS BECAUSE
OF THE NEED TO ASSUAGE AN UNUSUAL POWER DRIVE OR TO ACQUIRE MATERIAL
POSSESSIONS...
FROM OUR LORD JESUS (MARK 10: 35-45, MATTHEW 20:26â28,
LUKE 22:25â28)
42 JESUS CALLED THEM TOGETHER AND SAID, âYOU KNOW THAT THOSE WHO ARE
REGARDED AS RULERS OF THE GENTILES LORD IT OVER THEM, AND THEIR HIGH OFFICIALS
EXERCISE AUTHORITY OVER THEM. 43 NOT SO WITH YOU. INSTEAD, WHOEVER WANTS TO
BECOME GREAT AMONG YOU MUST BE YOUR SERVANT, 44 AND WHOEVER WANTS TO BE
FIRST MUST BE SERVANT OF ALL. 45 FOR EVEN THE SON OF MAN DID NOT COME TO BE
SERVED, BUT TO SERVE, AND TO GIVE HIS LIFE AS A RANSOM FOR MANY.â

⢠He was highly exalted
⢠His name is above all names

5. WHY BE A SERVANT LEADER CONT.
IF YOU ARE IN AUTHORITY OVER ANYONE AS A CHRISTIAN YOU MUST SERVE
During the last supper: John 13:3-5
Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under His power, and that He had come from God
and was returning to God; so He got up from the meal, took off His outer clothing, and
wrapped a towel around His waist. after that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash
His disciplesâ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around Him.
WHY?????
John 13:12-16
âdo you understand what I have done for you?â He asked them. âyou call me Teacher and Lord,
and rightly so, for that is what I Am. now that I your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet,
you also SHOULD wash one anotherâs feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I
have done for you. very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a
messenger greater than the one who sent him. now that you know these things, you will be
6. CORE ELEMENTS/ CHARACTERISTICS OF SERVANT
LEADERSHIP
⢠Misconception: leadership comes with glory, power, and positions
of honor
Thereâs no one-size-fits-all servant leader description (Jon Bloom)
⢠Sometimes servant leaders wash othersâ feet â Serve them(John
13:1â17),
⢠But other times they rebuke (Matthew 16:23)
⢠Even discipline (Matthew 18:15â20)
⢠Sometimes they serve at their own expense (1 Corinthians 9:1-23)
⢠Other times they issue strong imperatives (1 Corinthians 5:1-5;
11:11-16).
7. MARKS OF A SERVANT LEADER
DUE DILIGENCE IN DISCERNING A LEADERâS FITNESS (1 TIMOTHY 3:1-13)
1. A SERVANT LEADER SEEKS THE GLORY OF HIS MASTER- A SLAVE OF CHRIST (John
8:28-29; 7: 18-19; Eph. 6:5-8)
⢠not public approval, position or financial security takes his primary loyalty and
he swears to his own hurt and does not changeâ (psalm 15:4).
2. A SERVANT LEADER SACRIFICIALLY SEEKS THE HIGHEST JOY OF THOSE HE SERVES-
JESUS CAME TO SERVE (Matthew 20:26, 28)
⢠sacrifices whatever his temperament, gift mix, capacities, or sphere of influence, -
to pursue peopleâs âprogress and joy,â =greater glory of God (Philippians 1:21-26;
2:9â11).
8. MARKS OF A SERVANT LEADER CONT.
3. A SERVANT LEADER WILL FORGO HIS RIGHTS RATHER THAN OBSCURE THE GOSPEL â
PAUL (1 Cor. 9:1-231; 4:11â13)
⢠I have become all things to all men to win them
4. A SERVANT LEADER IS NOT PREOCCUPIED WITH PERSONAL VISIBILITY AND
RECOGNITION.- JOHN THE BAPTIST (JOHN 3:27-30)
⢠Doesnât view those with less visible roles in the body of Christ as less significant,
nor does he covet more visible roles as more significant (1 COR. 12:12â26)
⢠It is God who assigns roles (Romans 12: 4-8; Ephesians 4:1-16)
5. A SERVANT LEADER ANTICIPATES AND GRACIOUSLY ACCEPTS THE TIME FOR HIS
DECREASE-JOHN THE BAPTIST
⢠therefore this joy of mine is now complete. he must increase, but I must decreaseâ
(JOHN 3:29â30).
9. WHERE IS SERVANT LEADERSHIP APPLICABLE?
IF YOU ARE IN AUTHORITY OVER ANYONE AS A
CHRISTIAN YOU MUST SERVE!!!!!!!!!!!
⢠Where???
⢠In what circumstance ?????
⢠How?
10. ⢠IN CHURCH (BODY OF CHRIST)
⢠IN FAMILY (AS A PARENT, A SPOUSE OR A CHILD, A
SIBLING, AN IN-LAW ETC)
⢠AT SCHOOL (AS THE TUTOR OR STUDENT)
⢠AT WORK PLACE (AS A BOSS, AS AN EMPLOYEE)
⢠IN COMMUNITY
⢠IN POLITICS
12. A SERVANT LEADER THEREFORE:
⢠NURTURE A CHRIST-LIKE SERVANT-HEARTED CHARACTER
Jesus had a sacrificial servant heart that was focused on the needs of
others. ask yourself âhow can I live out Christ's servant hearted
character, putting first concern for those whom I lead?â
⢠FOCUS ON OTHERS
serve others so they can grow and be effective in Godâs service. ask
yourself âwhat else can I do to enable each person I lead to achieve
his or her full potential?â
⢠TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR UNDERSTANDING
effective communication is essential. so take responsibility and ask
yourself âwhat can I do to ensure that others have understood me and
that i have understood them?â
⢠CONSIDER THE INDIVIDUAL
make cooperation more effective by developing the best relationships
you can with those you lead. ask yourself âhow can I improve how we
work together by adjusting how I interact with each person?â
⢠NURTURE THE CHARACTER
encourage others to live out Christ-like values. ask yourself âhow can
I affirm those who are honest and truthful and how can i better
13. ⢠MODEL THE WAY
like it or not, you are a role model to those whom you lead and actions speak louder than
words. ask yourself âhow can I make my values to be more Christ-like and live them out in
front of those whom I lead?â
⢠INSPIRE A SHARED VISION
a shared vision of purpose and outcome, which is owned by all, is the key to achieving the
goal. ask yourself âhow can I engage my team to build a shared vision that encourages
greater levels of cooperation?â
⢠CHALLENGE THE PROCESS
it is always possible to be more effective, making it easier to achieve the
desired outcomes. ask yourself âhow can I encourage my team
to continually find better ways of doing things?â
⢠ENABLE OTHERS TO ACHIEVE
our goal is to enable others to achieve. ask yourself âhow can I better equip and empower
those whom I lead to more easily reach fulfill our shared vision?â
⢠ENCOURAGE THE HEART
knowing that one is valued is an important encouragement for everyone. ask yourself âhow
14. BUT REMEMBERâŚâŚâŚ
⢠All leaders have indwelling sin, which means even at the height of their maturity, they
will still be defective servants
⢠Most leaders have not yet reached their height of maturity.- WE ARE ALL WORK IN
PROGRESS!!!
⢠Different temperaments, experiences, giftings, and callings influence both how certain
leaders tend to serve, and how certain followers tend to perceive that leadership
⢠Leaderâs genuine attempt to serve might be interpreted by a genuine follower as an
attempt to âlord it overâ them (2 corinthians 1:24).
⢠And then there are wolfish, self-serving leaders who, while deceiving their followers,
appear for a time to behave in ways similar to servant leaders. âhumble pride (the
case of Gideon, Judges 8:22-27)
⢠Determining whether or not a leader is acting from a heart of Christ like service
requires charitable, patient, humble discernment
15. MERITS OF SERVANT LEADERSHIP
⢠Service is at the center of servant leadership-drop ego
and practice humility
⢠Leader to become the one who enables others to lead
themselves- each person feels responsibility for the
outcomes
⢠Increases dedication and a sense of pride in oneâs own
work
⢠Recognizing diversity among a group-encourages
stronger bonds within a group as a sense of fulfilment
increases
⢠Values and extols all input and seeks to serve the
individual rather than a collective mentality in decision
making -ownership and responsibility
⢠Frees the people of the abuse of power and coercion and
16. DEMERITS OF SERVANT LEADERSHIP
⢠It takes time-requires a change in attitudes
and mentality
⢠Lack of willingness to adapt
⢠Lack of authority
⢠Confusion regarding the goals of
leadership-serve the needs of the
employees or to meet the goals of the
institution
⢠A limited vision-leaders must in some way
be distinct, and even somewhat detached
17. IN CONCLUSION
⢠Servant leadership clearly reminds us that our authority is not something to
which we are entitled or that weâve earned.
⢠It shows others that we are accountable to the God who has given us this
authority. ( Mathew 20: 23b and Mark 10:40)
⢠It empowers those we lead to accomplish great things.
⢠The focal point of servant leadership within the church is âto prepare godâs
people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built upâ
(Ephesians 4:11-13).
⢠We are to give of our lives not only in service to Him but to our fellow man,
including those in the church and outside it (Mark 12:31).
