An experimental radio station that provides live relays of news and current
affairs programming from international public broadcasters started test
transmissions from the Astra satellite last week.
'World Radio Network' [WRN] operated a 20 hour per day schedule of English
language programmes from its Wimbledon studios, using programmes
supplied by the 'BBC World Service', 'Radio Canada', 'Voice of America',
American 'National Public Radio', 'Radio Australia' and many other
international stations.
The one-week experiment, using an audio sub-carrier of the 'Sky Sports' TV
channel, was intended as "a showcase for English language programming" in
preparation for a permanent operation.
WRN claims this to be the first occasion that international programming has
been re-broadcast by a station with a separate identity. Continuity
announcements and custom jingles were used to link the different strands, and
listeners were invited to comment on the output.
"We were overwhelmed by the reaction," said Director of Presentation Karl
Miosga. "The response has been very exciting and most have been very
positive about the service."
WRM hopes to go full-time within three months, when it will charge public
broadcasters for their programme transmissions, and sponsors will be sought
for the whole network. The service will remain unencrypted for direct-to-home
reception and potential terrestrial re-broadcast.
