1992 to October 2014 Nexen Petroleum U.S.
Lead Network Engineer
Projects:
Network Core and Edge replacement (11/13 to 09/14)
The company was using Nortel networking equipment at the Core and at the Edge. The company’s
strategy was to form partnerships with HP for infrastructure and security support. At this time it made
sense to remove the Nortel equipment and replace it with HP equipment to provide a level of vendor
continuity through the network.
• Network review and design sessions done prior to equipment purchase. HP and HP integrator
assisted in design.
• HP equipment purchased based on design work done with HP.
• Implementation plan put in to place in early 2014. The plan was two tiered with layer2 cutover first
followed by a final layer 3 cutover to new cores.
• Data center network migration done first and completed on schedule
• Houston office location complete one week behind schedule due to hardware failure.
Network Separation from Corporate office to "Stand Alone" office (2013)
Due to the company being acquired, was given a project which required the US office to be completely
separated from Nexen Global Network within a two month time frame. The following work was completed
on time by the team:
• New AD infrastructure - Team effort with help from third party. Personally responsible for DHCP
configuration and Perimeter security.
• New Exchange environment - Team effort. Performed perimeter security, MX record setup and
DNS entries on the internet edge router and DNS provider. Responsible for setup of load
balancing hardware for Exchange using Radware/Alteon switches fronted with Nortel switch
stacks.
• MPLS separation - Worked with third party to setup AS filters to block access to and from
international sites. Continued work with Verizon to move Nexen US to its own VRF on the
Verizon MPLS cloud.
• Mandiant NTAP device installation to increase security monitoring. Worked with Mandiant to
place NTAP devices at strategic locations on our network to monitor network for Malware activity.
• FireEye Web MPS - Installed FireEye device on the network using an inline installation that
provides real time monitoring for Malware on the network.
US Corporate office move including Datacenter move to Colocation Facility (2011 to 2012)
This was a complicated move having three main offices up and running at same time as well as new DC
build out at new Colocation facility
• Colocation facility planned, built and moved in 6 months prior to office consolidations.
• New cabling using GigaBIX frame and over cabinet patch cabling design
• New data circuit installation. Design was done as a team and later implemented by WAN group.
• Weekend Data Center move with zero support calls on Monday morning related to the Data
Center move
• After Data Center move, office build-out in Houston was completed.
• All infrastructure consolidated and all users moved to new office over a 3 day weekend.
Storage/Backup improvements (2009)
Vault storage system with snapshots and replicas created using NetApp hardware and software for 24/7
backups without affecting network performance. Increased uptime and reliability.
• Vault Configured to use as DR solution in case of main storage failure, Storage organized and
centralized with input from the technical applications group. Ongoing data management is done
by application teams with infrastructure group providing the tool for them to manage the data
effectively.
• Symantec Netbackup software upgraded to version seven
• Added new Quantum tape Library with LTO 4 tape drives.
US Corporate office move from Dallas to Frisco (2007 to 2008)
Two sites operational at same time for testing: One production, one test
• New DC build including pre-cabled DC using End of Row design.
• New cabling for 4 floors
• New data circuits
• Data migration to new storage systems coordinated with move.
New office installation in Houston with numerous expansions (2006 to 2007)
New datacenter onsite to accommodate local storage and servers.
• New cabling infrastructure.
• Worked with vendor to install VOIP phone system using Nortel CS1000 PBX
• New network circuits - Designed the network and worked with vendors during install.
• Office space was expanded to the 6th floor, the third floor and the first floor. Extended the
network to these floors and insured proper connectivity. This was done using previously recorded
benchmarks, using network monitoring tools, user feedback and simple "stop watch" testing.
Windows OS rollouts
Windows seven - worked on all back end NAS and SAN storage infrastructure. Also extensive application
testing. 2011
• Windows XP - worked on extensive application testing/validation and workstation rollouts. 2001
