3. Current status update
• Starting point: February 2015
• Research school BETA requires:
• PhD level course load of 40 ects (1120 hours)
• Full research proposal after 1 year
• Currently completed:
• 910 hours of course load
• Concept research proposal (including research framework)

4. Research framework
• The capital goods lifecycle:
• Each stage presents different topics to investigate. Design and exploitation
stages seem most interesting and most relevant for AM & service logistics

5. Topics in the exploitation stage
1) Current service supply chains are usually multi-echelon structures.
• Which conditions cause a shift to a series of independent single-echelon
systems? Take into account:
− Lead times
− Component costs
− Reliability
2) Some critical components have very long lead times. To protect
against downtime they must be stocked.
• Could AM be used to provide temporary replacements, buying time to
source the regular component or complete a mission?

6. Topics in the design stage
Introduction to WP2 611/12/2015
• Shifting to AM requires (re)visiting the design stage
• Quantify the required investment
• Quantify performance benefits and logistical benefits
• There is scientific work on interactions between (re)design stage
decisions and total cost of ownership (TCO)
• Some of our work will be positioned there

7. Future activities
• Finish up with coursework
• Complete the research proposal (February 2016)
• Part of this is identifying additional topics!
• Complete a first paper (summer 2016)
