40. RECENT VISIT OF PM MODI WITH
PRESIDENT SIRISENA
• Modi has been proactive about approaching Sri
Lanka on increasing defense cooperation. He and
Sirisena have reportedly agreed to expand India-Sri
Lanka cooperation on defense and security issues.
Modi additionally told the press that he and Sirisena
welcome India-Sri Lanka progress in “maritime
security cooperation, including in the trilateral
format with Maldives.” As demonstrated by his
election manifesto, Sirisena is aware of Indian
sensitivities toward Sri Lanka’s rapprochement with
China. Current trends suggest that cooperation
between New Delhi and Colombo should grow on
these issues as long as Sirisena is in charge.
41. TRADE OPPORTUNITIES FOR SRI
LANKA
• Sri Lanka’s exports growth has largely been under the
ISFTA, whereas India’s exports have remained
• mostly outside the ISFTA. In average, over 70% of Sri
Lanka’s exports to India continue to be under the
• ISFTA, while India’s exports to Sri Lanka under the ISFTA
remains only around 25%. Sri Lanka could
• export more than 4000 product lines to the Indian market on
duty free basis. The noteworthy aspect of
• the growth of exports under the agreement is the broader
product diversification, which took place
• following the FTA.
• Major exports from Sri Lanka under the ISFTA includes;
apparel, furniture, MDF boards, glass bottles,
• processed meat products, poultry feed, insulated wires &
cables, bottle coolers, pneumatic tires, tiles &
• ceramics products, rubber gloves, electrical panel boards &
enclosures, machinery parts, food
• preparations and spices etc.

FORWARD

48. INVESTMENT
Indian investment into SL has also increased significantly since
the FTA came into operation
Between 1978 & 1995, Indian investment accounted for 1.2%
of total FDI
Cumulative Indian investment which was a mere US$ 1.437 Mn
in 1998 increased to US$ 125.925 Mn by 2008, contributing to
14% of total FDI flows to SL
India is now the second biggest investor in SL, exceeded only
by Malaysia
The bulk of Indian investment (63%) in SL in recent years has
been in the services sector – telecommunications (Bharti
Airtel), health (Apollo Hospitals), retail services (Lanka Oil
Company), energy, hospitality (Taj Hotels) and air transport
services (Jet Airways)
As of the end of 2007, Indian investment resulted in over 70
projects, employing 6747 individuals
