2. Recent Insights
 Enrolments;
 First year CS enrolments at Otago University are at their
lowest levels since 2001
 This is consistent with the [University sector] trend
throughout NZ and the Western world
[Computerworld opinion piece]
 ICT enrolments across the ITP [Polytechnic] sector were
up 10% in 2011 [ ]
 Jobs;
 ICT jobs advertised on Seek & Trademe for January 2012
are up 11% & 2% respectively on the same time last year
 At this time last year Seek ICT job adverts were up 41% on
the January 2010 figures

Biggest challenge facing ICT in 2012 [Brendan McCane, Head of CS, Otago
University] [ , 9th January 2012]
 It is the same as it ever was: it is people, it is people, it is people
 First year enrolments in CS fallen 60% from 500 in 2001 to 200 in 2011
 Current numbers, consistent throughout NZ and the western world,
are insufficient [to meet the needs of the industry]
 Online ICT vacancies are consistently double that of any other
industry
 Everyone in ICT needs to trumpet the benefits of ICT knowledge and
skills and encourage more people into the industry

in the NZCS December edition of ICT Trends: meeting the
future demand for skills’

9. Recent News Items
The State Services Commission's annual Human Resources
Capacity Survey, examining the employment characteristics
of the public service in NZ, shows;
 ICT roles [systems analysts, programmers, customer
support officers, etc] fell by 13.5 percent in the year
to June, 2011 - the biggest drop of all government
employment groups
 There were 1738 ICT fulltime equivalent employees
as at June 30, 2011, compared with 2009 at the
corresponding date a year earlier
 Unplanned turnover of ICT staff jumped from 8 per
cent to 16 per cent in 2011

10. Conclusions:
 The continuing trend of falling tertiary sector enrolments in
ICT/CS presents one of the biggest challenges to the
industry for 2012
 ICT job potential remains extremely healthy
