Pillars of Islam
Kalma-e-Shahadat:
"Ashhadu Alla Ilaha Illa Allah Wa Ashhadu Anna Muhammad Rasulu
Allah"
"I bear witness that there is no deity other than Allah (Subhanahu wa ta'ala)
and that Muhammad (SALLA ALLAH ALAIHI WA SALLAM) is his servant and
Messenger."
These are the words (Kalimah) by which one declares his/her intention to become
a Muslim. A newly reverted Muslim has to understand the meaning of this simple phrase and
live and act in accordance to its principles to be guaranteed admission into heaven. Mere words
are easily uttered, but Allah(Subhanahu wa ta'ala) considers what is in one’s heart and measures
one’s deeds to judge between his creatures.
Someone, who simply repeats the Kalimah, is in the same position as a student admitted to a
prestigious University. They have both overcome a great hurdle and are to be commended.
However, unless they understand the significance of the action they have undertaken, apply
themselves, and work earnestly toward realizing their goal, they will both fail: one in this life
and the other in the hereafter.
A true Muslim is someone, who is completely aware of the meaning of this phrase, proclaims
it with sincerity and devotion, and acts and lives in accordance to its requirements. Muslims
are not allowed to take partners or intercessors (prophets, saints, righteous people, idols) with
Allah (Subhanahu wa ta'ala); They are to worship, obey, and rely solely on Allah (Subhanahu
wa ta’ala) and his revelations; They must accept Allah's (Subhanahu wa ta'ala) laws (religious
and social) and orders (permissible and forbidden); and they should not put anyone or anything
ahead of their obligations toward Allah (Subhanahu wa ta'ala).
2 | P a g e
Allah (Subhanahu wa ta’ala) has instructed us to believe solely in him, worship him, and ask
him for help and guidance. Muslims should avoid all satanic rituals of attributing special
powers to the dead, visiting the shrines of righteous people for blessing, asking religious
scholars for intercession, or seeking favors from fortune tellers. These are pagan and
superstitious rituals contradictory to the concept of "there is no deity other than Allah
(Subhanahu wa ta’ala)":
“Revile not ye those whom they call upon besides Allah, lest they out of spite revile
Allah in their ignorance. Thus have We made alluring to each people its own doings. In
the end will they return to their Lord, and We shall then tell them the truth of all that
they did.”
(The Holy Quran, Al-Anaam, 6:108)
Also contrary to the idea of "there is no deity other than Allah (Subhanahu wa ta’ala)" is the
practice of willfully accepting, following, and promoting any doctrine or idea that contradicts
Islam. This means that we should not follow or promote any man-made concept that belies the
revelations contained in the Holy Quran or authentic teachings of the Holy Prophet (Sallah
Alihi Wasalim). A person who does so reneges on his/her pledge to only obey and worship
Allah (Subhanahu wa ta'ala):
“But those who reject Faith and belie our Signs (revelations),- they shall be companions
of Hell-fire.”
(The Holy Quran, Al-Maeda, 5:86)
The phrase, "Muhammad (Salla allah alaihi wa sallam) is his servant and Messenger", indicates
that the person taking this solemn oath has accepted the divine origin of the Holy Quran and
the teachings of the Holy Prophet (Salla allah alaihi wa sallam). Muslims believe that Hadhrat
Muhammad (Salla allah alaihi wa sallam) of Arabia was the last of the Prophets (Salla allah
alaihi wa sallam) to be commissioned and the perfect role model for us to follow:
“Muhammad is not the father of any of your men, but he is the Messenger of Allah and
the Last of the prophets; and Allah is cognizant of all things.”
(The Holy Quran, Al-Ahzab, 33:40)

Prayer (Salat):
The Arabic word for prayer is salât, salat in Arabic, facing the Kaaba in Mecca, The
prayer, particularly the five daily obligatory prayers, is one of the pillars of Islam. The
command to ritual prayer is in the Qur'an in several chapters. The prophet Muhammed showed
each Muslim the true method of offering prayers thus the same method is observed up to the
present time. There is the "call for prayer" (adhan), where the muezzin calls for all the followers
to stand together for the prayer. The prayer consists of standing, by mentioning ‘Allāhu Akbar’
(Allāh (God) is Great) followed by recitation of the first chapter of the Qur'an. (Al-Fatiha)
Afterwards the person prostrates and praises God, then prostrates them-self and again praises
God. The prayer ends with the following words: "Peace be with you and God’s mercy". During
the prayer, a Muslim cannot talk or do anything else besides pray. Certain Shi'a sects combine
the mandatory five prayers into three prayers a day, providing several Hadith as supporting
evidence.
“And establish prayer and give zakah and bow with those who bow [in worship and
obedience]. “
(Surat Al-Baqarah 2:43)
“And seek help through patience and prayer, and indeed, it is difficult except for the
humbly submissive [to Allah]”
(Surat Al-Baqarah 2:45)
Once the prayer (Salât) is complete, one can offer personal prayers or supplications to God
for their needs. These are known as dua. There are many standard invocations in Arabic to be
recited at various times, and for various occasions. E.g. for one's parents, after Salât, before
eating. Muslims may also say dua in their own words and languages for any issue they wish
to communicate with God in the hope that God will answer their prayers.
Virtues, Benefits and Importance of PrayerAccording To Quran o Hadiths:
The importance of the prayer in Islam cannot be understated. It is the first pillar of
Islam that the Prophet, may the mercy and blessings of Allah be upon him, mentioned after
mentioning the Testimony of Faith, by which one becomes a Muslim. It was made obligatory
upon all the prophets and for all peoples. God has declared its obligatory status under majestic
circumstances. For example, when God spoke directly to Moses, He said,
“And I have chosen you, so listen to that which is inspired to you. Verily, I am God!
There is none worthy of worship but I, so worship Me and offer prayer perfectly for My
remembrance.”
(Quran 20:13-14)
4 | P a g e
Similarly, the prayers were made obligatory upon the Prophet Muhammad during his ascension
to heaven. Furthermore, when God praises the believers, such as in the beginning of the chapter
entitled ‘Al-Muminoon’ (the Believers), one of the first descriptions He states is their
adherence to the prayers.
Once a man asked the Prophet about the most virtuous deed. The Prophet stated that
the most virtuous deed is the prayer. The man asked again and again and for the first
three times, the Prophet answered, “The prayer,” then on the fourth occasion he stated,
“Jihad in the way of God.”
The importance of prayer is demonstrated in many of the Prophet’s statements. For example,
the Prophet said,
“The first matter that the slave will be brought to account for on the Day of Judgment is
the prayer. If it is sound, then the rest of his deeds will be sound. And if it is
incomplete, then the rest of his deeds will be incomplete.”
The importance of the prayers lies in the fact that no matter what actions one performs
in his life, the most important aspect is one’s relationship to God, that is, one’s faith (imaan),
God-consciousness (taqwa), sincerity (ikhlas) and worship of God (ibaadah). This relationship
with God is both demonstrated and put into practice, as well as improved and increased, by the
prayer. Therefore, if the prayers are sound and proper, the rest of the deeds will be sound and
proper; and if the prayers are not sound and proper, then the rest of the deeds will not be sound
and proper, as the Prophet himself stated.
In reality, the prayer is performed properly – with true remembrance of God and turning
to Him for forgiveness – it will have a lasting effect on the person. After he finishes the prayer,
his heart will be filled with the remembrance of God. He will be fearful as well as hopeful of
God. After that experience, he will not want to move from that lofty position to one wherein
he disobeys God. God has mentioned this aspect of the prayer when He has said,
“Verily, the prayer keeps one from the great sins and evil deeds”
(Quran 29:45)
Effects of Prayers in the Lights Of Quran o Hadiths:
Its aim is to generate within the subliminal self of man such spiritual power, light of
faith and awareness of God as can enable him to strive successfully against all kinds of evils
and temptations and remain steadfast at times of trial and adversity and protect himself against
the weakness of the flesh and the mischief of immoderate appetites.
The overall affect that the properly performed prayers should have upon humans is described
in other verses in the Quran:
“Verily, man was created impatient, irritable when evil touches him and ungenerous
when good touches him. Except for those devoted to prayer those who remain constant
in their prayers…”
(Quran 70:19-23)
5 | P a g e
As for the Hereafter, God’s forgiveness and pleasure is closely related to the prayers. The
Messenger of God said,
“God has obligated five prayers. Whoever excellently performs their ablutions, prays
them in their proper times, completes their bows, prostrations and khushu, has a
promise from God that He will forgive him. And whoever does not do that has no
promise from God. He may either forgive him or punish him.”
The prayers are a type of purification for a human being. He turns and meets with his
Lord five times a day. As alluded to above, this repeated standing in front of God should keep
the person from doing sinful acts during the day. Furthermore, it should also be a time of
remorse and repentance, such that he earnestly asks God for forgiveness for those sins that he
committed. In addition, the prayer in itself is a good deed that wipes away some of the evil
deeds that he performed. These points can be noted in the following hadith of the Prophet, may
the mercy and blessings of God be upon him:
“If a person had a stream outside his door and he bathed in it five times a day, do you
think he would have any filth left on him?” The people said, “No filth would remain on
him whatsoever.” The Prophet then said, “That is like the five daily prayers: God wipes
away the sins by them.”
(Saheeh Al-Bukhari, Saheeh Muslim)
In another hadith, the Prophet said,
“The five daily prayers and the Friday Prayer until the Friday prayer are expiation for
what is between them.”
(Saheeh Muslim)
Fasting (Saum):
O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon
those before you that you may become righteous –
(Surat Al-Baqarah 2:183)
Saum, fasting during the holy month of Ramadan, is the fourth pillar of Islam. Ordained
in the Holy Qur'an, the fast is an act of deep personal worship in which Muslims seek a richer
perception of God. Fasting is also an exercise in self-control whereby one's sensitivity is
heightened to the sufferings of the poor. Ramadan, the month during which the Holy
Qur'an was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad, begins with the sighting of the new moon,
after which abstention from eating, drinking and other sensual pleasures is obligatory from
dawn to sunset.
Ramadanis also a joyful month. Muslims break their fast at sunset with a special meal, iftar,
perform additional nocturnal worship, tarawih, after evening prayer; and throng the streets in
6 | P a g e
moods that are festive and communal. The end of Ramadan is observed by three days of
celebration called Eid Al-Fitr, the feast of the breaking of the fast. Customarily, it is a time for
family reunion and the favored holiday for children who receive new clothing and gifts.
Ramadan is the 9th month of the lunar calendar which Muslims follow. This month is very
important in Islam as it was in this month the Quranic revelations started.
During this month Muslims must fast from sunrise to sunset, abstaining from all food and drink.
Apart from that we must also not have any sexual contact, it is strongly recommended to wake
up before sunrise to have a meal, as fasting is not there to make life difficult for you, Allah
does not want anyone to suffer. Following the tradition of prophet Muhammad Muslims
break their fast at sunset with dates and water.
Those who are sick, on a journey, young children, elderly and women who are pregnant or
nursing a child may break their fast but have to make up for days lost at a later time.
You are forbidden to fast if fasting will endanger your life, also women who are menstruating
are forbidden to fast but must make up for the days lost. If someone is physically unable to fast
they must feed a needy person for each day missed. Children start fasting (and praying) from
puberty although many start before.
Although fasting is beneficial for the health, it is regarded principally as a method of self-
purification. During fasting you are cut off from worldly pleasures and comforts. When fasting
you gain sympathy for those who go hungry on a daily basis, so you are more willing to help
them. While fasting you achieve spiritual growth, you learn discipline, self-restraint, patience
and flexibility.During the month of Ramadan a Muslim should read the entire Quran, from
cover to cover.
Also during Ramadan there are special prayers each evening after Isha prayers. These prayers
are called Tarawih. The Quran is divided into 30 parts called Juz, and each evening one of these
parts are recited so that the whole of the Quran will be completed at the end of Ramadan.
During the last 10 days of Ramadan there is a special night called the Night of Power (Laylat
al-Qadr). To spend this whole night in prayer and worship is equivalent to a thousand months
of worship, so Allah's reward for this is very great.
On the first day after the end of Ramadan, which is when the next moon is visible, the festival
of Eid ul Fitr is celebrated and fasting stops. On this day Muslims who are able to will feed the
poor, called Zakat al-Fitr. On the day of Eid Muslims put on their best clothes and attend Eid
prayers at the mosque. After this the day is normally spend celebrating with family and friends.
Fasting in the month of Ramadan is obligatory, but apart from Ramadan there are other
voluntary fasts throughout the year. Muslims are encouraged to fast six days of the month of
Shawwal which is the month following Ramadan. Also Mondays and Thursdays are
recommended for fasting and the three middle days of each month. Another day recommended
for fasting is the day of Ashura, which is the 10th day of Muharram, which is the first month
7 | P a g e
of the lunar calendar. It was on this day that prophet Moses (as) and his followers were saved
and the pharaoh was drowned. Fasting on the days of Eid is strictly forbidden in Islam.
Benefits of Fasting In The Lights Of Hadiths:
Abu Hurayrah, May Allah be pleased with him, narrated that Allah’s Apostle, Salla
Allahu Alayhi Wasallam, said, what translated means,
“Allah said, ‘All the deeds of the son of Adam are for him: the good deeds will
be multiplied ten times to seven hundred time, except fasting, which is for Me
and I will reward for it accordingly. He abandons his (sexual) desire, food and
drink for Me.’ Verily, there are two joyous and pleasurable moments for the
fasting person: one at the time of breaking his fast, and the other is when he
will meet his Lord (in the Hereafter). Verily, the unpleasant odor emanating
from the mouth of the fasting person is better in the sight of Allah than the
scent of musk.”
[Al-Bukhari & Muslim].
This noble Hadith contains numerous virtues and benefits that can only be attained
from fasting. It also indicates the importance of fasting in Islam and its obligation upon all
Muslims.
1. Multiplying the rewards for fasting is different than the rest of the acts of worship
and good deeds. As for fasting, there is no limit for such multiplication, while in
the case of other deeds, each good credit is multiplied from ten to seven hundred
times only.
2. Sincerity while fasting counts more than sincerity while performing other deeds,
for Allah said in the Hadith,
“He abandons his (sexual) desire, food and drink for Me.”
3. Allah has chosen fasting to be the acts of worship that He Himself will reward for
it, for He said,
“Fasting is for Me, and I will reward for it accordingly.”
4. Fasting brings about two great occasions of joy and happiness for the fasting
person: one in this life, and that is when he breaks his fast with what Allah has
allowed for him of foods and drinks. As for the other, it is in the Hereafter, and
that is when he receives the rewards for his fast. This is permissible happiness
and joy, just as Allah said, what translated means,
"Say, “In the Bounty of Allah, and in His Mercy (i.e. Islam and the
Quran); therein let them rejoice.”" [10:58].
8 | P a g e
5. The odor emanating from the mouth of the fasting person, which is sometimes
foul, is more beloved to Allah than the scent of musk. This is because such bad
odor is the result of a deed that Allah loves, and He therefore loves the resulting
odor as well. This is clear from the portion of the Hadith that reads,
“The unpleasant odor emanating from the mouth of a fasting person is
better in the sight of Allah than the scent of musk.”
6. Among the benefits of fasting is that Allah has designated one of the gates of
Paradise solely for those who frequently fast. The Prophet Salla Allahu Alayhi
Wasallam said, what translated means,
“There is a gate in Paradise called Ar-Rayyan, and those who frequently
fast will enter through it on the Day of Resurrection, and none except
them shall enter through it. It will be said, ‘Where are those who used to
fast?’ They will stand up, and none except them will enter through it.
Upon entry, that gate will be closed and no one else will enter through
it.”
[Al-Bukhari].
7. Fasting is a shield and protection from harmful desires and from the heat of Hell,
as an authentic Hadith affirms.
8. The supplication of the fasting person is accepted. The Messenger of Allah, Salla
Allahu Alayhi Wasallam, said, what translated means,
“The fasting person has at the time of breaking his fast a Du’aa’ that is
not rejected.”
[Ibn Majah & Al-’Hakim].
Also, Allah Almighty said while referring to fasting,
"And when My slaves ask you (O Mohammad) concerning Me, then
answer them, I am indeed near (to them by My Knowledge). I respond to
the invocations of the supplicant when he calls on Me (without any
mediator or intercessor)." [2:186].
9. Another benefit of fasting is that It teaches man the principle of sincere Love:
because when he observes Fasting he does it out of deep love for God. And the
man who loves God truly is a man who really knows what love is.
10. It indoctrinates man in patience and selflessness, as through fasting, he feels the
pains of deprivation but he endures them patiently. The Prophet Salla Allahu Alayhi
Wasallam said, what translated means,
“Fasting is one half of patience.”
[At-Tirmithi & Ibn Majah].
9 | P a g e
Conditions:
“Throughout the duration of the fast itself, Muslims will abstain from certain provisions
that the Quran has otherwise allowed; namely eating, drinking, and sexual intercourse.”
[Quran 2:187]
This is in addition to the standard obligation already observed by Muslims of avoiding
that which is not permissible under Quranic or Shari'ah law (e.g. ignorant and indecent speech,
arguing and fighting, and lustful). Without observing this standard obligation, Saum is rendered
useless, and is seen simply as an act of starvation. The fasting should be a motive to be more
benevolent to the fellow-creatures. Charity to the poor and needy in this month is one of most
reward able worship.
“(Fasting) for a fixed number of days; but if any of you is ill, or on a journey, the
prescribed number (should be made up) from days later. For those who can do it (with
hardship), is a ransom, the feeding of one that is indigent. But he that will give more, of
his own free will, it is better for him. And it is better for you that ye fast, if ye only
knew.” 2:184
If one is sick, nursing or traveling, one is considered exempt from fasting. Any fasts broken or
missed due to sickness, nursing or traveling must be made up whenever the person is able
before the next month of Ramadan. According to the Quran, for all other cases, not fasting is
only permitted when the act is potentially dangerous to one's health - for example; those elderly
who are too weak to fast for extended periods of time, diabetics, nursing, and pregnant women,
but this must be made up by paying a fidyah which is essentially the iftaar, dinner and suhur
for a fasting person who requires such financial help.
According to the Quran and the Sunnah, if someone cannot afford fasting due to illness
or traveling they are permitted to suspend fasting and continue at a more opportune time or
condition of health. However, the question of those suffering a permanent disease has not been
resolved. One view is that they can waive the obligation to fast if advised by a medical expert.
Furthermore, it is held that they can provide a poor person with a meal for each day of fasting
waived. Nonetheless, such a delinquent person must be willing to fast when in health.
Social Benefits:
Fasting has numerous other virtues and benefits, but we only mention a few to drive home
the point to the reader.
1. It teaches man the principle of sincere Love: because when he observes Fasting he does
it out of deep love for God. And the man who loves God truly is a man who really
knows what love is.
2. It equips man with a creative sense of hope and an optimistic outlook on life; because
when he fasts he is hoping to please God and is seeking His Grace.
3. It imbues in man the genuine virtue of effective devotion, honest dedication and
closeness to God; because when he fasts he does so for God and for His sake alone.
4. It cultivates in man a vigilant and sound conscience; because the fasting person keeps
his fast in secret as well as in public. In fasting, especially, there is no mundane
authority to check man's behavior or compel him to observe fasting. He keeps it to
10 | P a g e
please God and satisfy his own conscience by being faithful in secret and in public.
There is no better way to cultivate sound conscience in man.
5. It indoctrinates man in patience and selflessness, as through fasting, he feels the pains
of deprivation but he endures them patiently.
6. It is an effective lesson in applied moderation and willpower.
7. Fasting also provides man with a transparent soul, a clear mind and a light body.
8. It shows man a new way of wise savings and sound budgeting.
9. It enables man to master the art of Mature Adaptability. We can easily understand the
point once we realize that fasting makes man change the entire course of his daily life.
10. It grounds man in discipline and healthy survival.
11. It originates in man the real spirit of social belonging, unity and brotherhood, of equality
before God as well as before the law.
12. It is a Godly prescription for self-reassurance and self-control.
Medical Benefits of Fasting:
DIABETES MELLITUS AND RAMADAN FASTING:
Diabetes mellitus affects people of all faiths. Muslims are no exception. Many diabetic
Muslims have a desire to fast during the month of Ramadan, although if they cannot for health
reasons, they have a valid exemption. The dilemma for physicians and Muslim scholars is
whether or not Muslim diabetic patients
(1) Should be allowed to fast if they decide to;
(2) Can fast safely;
(3) Can be helped to fast if they decide to;
(4) Can have their disease monitored at home; and
(5) Are going to derive any benefit or harm to their health.
Fasting during Ramadan by a Muslim diabetic patient is neither his right nor Islamic
obligation, but only a privilege to be allowed by his physician, at the patient's request, knowing
all the dangers and assuming full responsibility in dietary compliance and glucose monitoring,
with good communication between the physician and the patient .
PSYCHOLOGICAL STATE OF DIABETES DURING RAMADAN:
Diabetes mellitus itself adversely affects patients' psychological states by changes in
glucose metabolism, blood and CSF osmolality, needs for discipline and compliance, fear of
long term complications and threat of hypoglycemic attacks and the possibility of dehydration
and coma.
11 | P a g e
On the other hand, fasting during Ramadan has a tranquilizing effect on the mind, producing
inner peace and decrease in anger and hostility. Fasting Muslims realize that manifestations of
anger may take away the blessings of fasting or even nullify them.
Diabetics know that stress increases the blood glucose by increasing the catecholamine level
and any tool to lower the stress; i.e., biofeedback or relaxation improves diabetic control. Thus,
Zakat:
Zakat is the Fourth Pillar of Islam. It is an obligation (Fard), prescribed by God on those
Muslim men and women who possess enough means, to distribute a certain percentage of their
annual savings or capital in goods or money among the poor and the needy. Zakat is assessed
once a year on both capital and savings from income.
“Who believe in the unseen, establish prayer, and spend out of what We have provided
for them”
(Surat Al-Baqarah 2:3)
Receptors of Zakat According to Quran:
Qur'an discusses charity in many verses, some of which relate to zakat. The word zakat,
with the meaning used in Islam now, is found in many suras. Zakat is found in the early
Medinan suras. In the quranic view, zakat is obligatory, but considered more than taxation.
Those who are eligible to receive zakat are mentioned in the Holy Qur'an.
“Zakah expenditures are only for the poor and for the needy and for those employed to
collect [zakah] and for bringing hearts together [for Islam] and for freeing captives [or
slaves] and for those in debt and for the cause of Allah and for the [stranded] traveler -
an obligation [imposed] by Allah. And Allah is Knowing and Wise.”
(Surat At-Tawbah 9:60)
It should be remembered that these categories of persons who are to be helped by zakat were
laid down fourteen hundred years ago. They are equally applicable to our own time.
1. The poor: Those who does not have anything to support themselves.
2. The needy: Those people who have some income or earnings but it is not enough to provide
them with basic needs.
3. Zakat collectors: The salaries of these workers may be paid from this fund.
4. Converts: Those people who have embraced Islam and. Attempts should be made to settle
them in a normal life.
5. People who are not free: This category would include payment of ransom for freeing Muslim
salves from slavery from their owners.
12 | P a g e
6. Debtors: People who are unable to pay debts incurred due to pressing lawful needs.
7. Wayfarers and travelers: Those people who are rendered helpless outside their city.
8. In the Cause of Allah
According to Hadith:
Abu Hurairah narrated:
That the Prophet said:
"When you pay the Zakat you have fulfilled what is required of you."
(Jami` at-Tirmidhi 618, Book 7, Hadith 2)
Nisaab of Zakat:
Each of the most trusted hadiths in Islam have a book dedicated to zakat. Sahih
Bukhari's Book 24, Sahih Muslim's Book 5, and Sunan Abu-Dawud Book 9 discuss various
aspects of zakat, including who must pay, how much, when and what. The 2.5% rate is also
recited in the hadiths.
The hadiths admonish those who do not give the zakat. According to the hadith, refusal to pay
or mockery of those who pay zakat is a sign of hypocrisy, and God will not accept the prayers
of such people. The Sunnah also describe God's punishment for those who refuse or fail to pay
zakat. On the Day of Judgment, those who didn't give the zakat will be held accountable and
punished.
The hadith contain advice on the state-authorized collection of the zakat. The collectors are
required not to take more than what is due, and those who are paying the zakat are asked not
to evade payment. The hadith also warn of punishment to those who take zakat when they are
not eligible to receive it.
Benefits of Zakat:
1. The first and the most important benefit of zakat is the purification of the halal money. Once
zakat is paid, money becomes pure and in goes under the assurance of ALLAH (Subhanahu wa
ta'ala). Hence a person who is zakat payer will never see short of rizq except ALLAH’s will.
2. Zakat keeps the money flow inside society in balance and constant. The sahib-e nisab pay
zakat which is gotten by poor people hence the money inflow remains same and constant.
3. The money flow in a Muslim zakat paying society is downward i.e. from top to bottom. In
this way what rich people have they also give a share of it to the poor people and keep them
live like humans unlike the life of the poor we see today.
4. It eradicates begging.
5. Unemployment erases because progressive economy always needs more and more workers.
13 | P a g e
6. The moral degradation of society lowers and ultimately finishes because the frustration of
people and their depression lowers down.
7. A progressive economy makes a strong state.
Hajj:
Introduction:
Hajj and its importance to Muslims? Hajj is a once in a lifetime pilgrimage of Muslims
to Mecca. It is in Saudi Arabia, in the Middle East in Asia. Hajj should be performed at least
once in a Muslims lifetime. For Muslims, the Hajj is the fifth and final pillar of Islam. It occurs
in the month of Dhul Hijjah, which is the twelfth month of the Islamic calendar. The hajj makes
Muslims feel the real importance of life here on earth, and the after-life and shows the real
meaning of life. During the Hajj, the pilgrims perform act of worship, and ask forgiveness. The
Kaba plays a big part in the Hajj; it is the centre, because Muslims go around it seven times.
Ibrahim and his son Ismail built the Kaba, about four thousand years before Mohammed was
born. The quote from the Quaran says,
"And perform properly (i.e. all the ceremonies according to the ways of Prophet
Muhammad (p.b.u.h.)), the Hajj and Umrah (i.e. the pilgrimage to Makkah) for Allah. “
(Quran: 2/196)
Muslims should perform Hajj, if they can afford it, the quote from the Quaran says,
"And complete the Hajj and 'umrah for Allah . But if you are prevented, then
[offer] what can be obtained with ease of sacrificial animals.”
(2:196)
Only 5% of the Muslim population get to go on Hajj every year. This is a very small
percentage of the Muslim population.
Middle:
Being present at Arafat is the most important part of the pilgrimage without it the Hajj
is not complete,
“When at Arafat we know they should concentrate on Allah”. 2:197
After the pilgrims have travelled to Muzdalifah in time for the evening prayers, they camp at
Muzdalifah overnight. When the pilgrims are at Muzdalifah they collect 49 stones. On the 10th
of Dhul Hijjah the pilgrims travel from Muzdalifah to Mina. At Mina there are 3 stone pillars
these represent the Devil. Also on that day the pilgrims throw 7 stones at one of the pillars.
They continue this ritual on the 11th and 12th of Dhul Hijjah. On the 11th they throw 7 stones
at each of the 3 pillars and on the 12th they again throw 7 stones at each of the 3 pillars. The
reason for this practice is because it reminds the pilgrims of Ibrahim and his son Ismail. Ibrahim
14 | P a g e
and his son withstood the temptation by throwing stones at the devil. The purpose and meaning
of this ritual is a much more personal one. As the pilgrims Stone the Devil, they are expressing
their own rejection of evil and their own resolve to withstand any temptations, which may
appear their way. While Muslims are not stoning the devil they recite the Talbiyah. After the
ritual stoning the Devil has been done many pilgrims sacrifice an animal, usually a sheep, goat
or even a camel.
"... And the camels we have made a part of Allah's rites. Pronounce over them the name
of Allah as they have fallen down on their sides eat their flesh and feed it to the poor
and the beggar". 2:235
Before the sacrifice the pilgrims take off their Ihram and put on their normal clothes.
Conclusion:
You have to have a right frame of mind and be fully focused on your task. You really
have to mean it be committed to it fully as possible and show total loyalty towards Allah and
keep yourself clean and have a stable mind of frame. However some may disagree with this
statement. They may say that even if the pilgrim has not the right frame of mind, they still
performed it like it says in the Quaran to do the fifth pillar of Islam means you're a true Muslim.
I believe that a Muslim should act upon as a good Muslim and be committed to their
faith and truly to their pilgrimage. Also a real pilgrimage is when you mean it from the bottom
of your heart. Also when someone goes to pilgrimage because there family forces them to go
and the person is not ready to go but has to then this means that the person will not be truly
committed to the task ahead. However I conclude from all this a true pilgrimage is definitely
from some sort of way, not matter where you are or even if you don't get to perform the rituals
your true pilgrimage is accepted or within when you are so dedicated in going on Hajj for the
right reasons, right intention and right frame of mind and if you take a true understanding of
what is right from wrong. You have to perform the physical activities to show your devotion
to Allah, but it must be done with the right niyyah (INTENSION).

Pillars of islam

  • 1. 3/14/2015 Pillars of Islam Islamic Studies Assignment GroupMembers: 1. Syed Anas Abdali 2. Danish Akber 3. Kamran Ahmed Qadri 4. Samiya Nawaz 5. Muhammad Noman Tajj 6. Abdul Moiz Masroor a
  • 2. 1 | P a g e Pillars of Islam Kalma-e-Shahadat: "Ashhadu Alla Ilaha Illa Allah Wa Ashhadu Anna Muhammad Rasulu Allah" "I bear witness that there is no deity other than Allah (Subhanahu wa ta'ala) and that Muhammad (SALLA ALLAH ALAIHI WA SALLAM) is his servant and Messenger." These are the words (Kalimah) by which one declares his/her intention to become a Muslim. A newly reverted Muslim has to understand the meaning of this simple phrase and live and act in accordance to its principles to be guaranteed admission into heaven. Mere words are easily uttered, but Allah(Subhanahu wa ta'ala) considers what is in one’s heart and measures one’s deeds to judge between his creatures. Someone, who simply repeats the Kalimah, is in the same position as a student admitted to a prestigious University. They have both overcome a great hurdle and are to be commended. However, unless they understand the significance of the action they have undertaken, apply themselves, and work earnestly toward realizing their goal, they will both fail: one in this life and the other in the hereafter. A true Muslim is someone, who is completely aware of the meaning of this phrase, proclaims it with sincerity and devotion, and acts and lives in accordance to its requirements. Muslims are not allowed to take partners or intercessors (prophets, saints, righteous people, idols) with Allah (Subhanahu wa ta'ala); They are to worship, obey, and rely solely on Allah (Subhanahu wa ta’ala) and his revelations; They must accept Allah's (Subhanahu wa ta'ala) laws (religious and social) and orders (permissible and forbidden); and they should not put anyone or anything ahead of their obligations toward Allah (Subhanahu wa ta'ala).
  • 3. 2 | P a g e Allah (Subhanahu wa ta’ala) has instructed us to believe solely in him, worship him, and ask him for help and guidance. Muslims should avoid all satanic rituals of attributing special powers to the dead, visiting the shrines of righteous people for blessing, asking religious scholars for intercession, or seeking favors from fortune tellers. These are pagan and superstitious rituals contradictory to the concept of "there is no deity other than Allah (Subhanahu wa ta’ala)": “Revile not ye those whom they call upon besides Allah, lest they out of spite revile Allah in their ignorance. Thus have We made alluring to each people its own doings. In the end will they return to their Lord, and We shall then tell them the truth of all that they did.” (The Holy Quran, Al-Anaam, 6:108) Also contrary to the idea of "there is no deity other than Allah (Subhanahu wa ta’ala)" is the practice of willfully accepting, following, and promoting any doctrine or idea that contradicts Islam. This means that we should not follow or promote any man-made concept that belies the revelations contained in the Holy Quran or authentic teachings of the Holy Prophet (Sallah Alihi Wasalim). A person who does so reneges on his/her pledge to only obey and worship Allah (Subhanahu wa ta'ala): “But those who reject Faith and belie our Signs (revelations),- they shall be companions of Hell-fire.” (The Holy Quran, Al-Maeda, 5:86) The phrase, "Muhammad (Salla allah alaihi wa sallam) is his servant and Messenger", indicates that the person taking this solemn oath has accepted the divine origin of the Holy Quran and the teachings of the Holy Prophet (Salla allah alaihi wa sallam). Muslims believe that Hadhrat Muhammad (Salla allah alaihi wa sallam) of Arabia was the last of the Prophets (Salla allah alaihi wa sallam) to be commissioned and the perfect role model for us to follow: “Muhammad is not the father of any of your men, but he is the Messenger of Allah and the Last of the prophets; and Allah is cognizant of all things.” (The Holy Quran, Al-Ahzab, 33:40)
  • 4. 3 | P a g e Prayer (Salat): The Arabic word for prayer is salât, salat in Arabic, facing the Kaaba in Mecca, The prayer, particularly the five daily obligatory prayers, is one of the pillars of Islam. The command to ritual prayer is in the Qur'an in several chapters. The prophet Muhammed showed each Muslim the true method of offering prayers thus the same method is observed up to the present time. There is the "call for prayer" (adhan), where the muezzin calls for all the followers to stand together for the prayer. The prayer consists of standing, by mentioning ‘Allāhu Akbar’ (Allāh (God) is Great) followed by recitation of the first chapter of the Qur'an. (Al-Fatiha) Afterwards the person prostrates and praises God, then prostrates them-self and again praises God. The prayer ends with the following words: "Peace be with you and God’s mercy". During the prayer, a Muslim cannot talk or do anything else besides pray. Certain Shi'a sects combine the mandatory five prayers into three prayers a day, providing several Hadith as supporting evidence. “And establish prayer and give zakah and bow with those who bow [in worship and obedience]. “ (Surat Al-Baqarah 2:43) “And seek help through patience and prayer, and indeed, it is difficult except for the humbly submissive [to Allah]” (Surat Al-Baqarah 2:45) Once the prayer (Salât) is complete, one can offer personal prayers or supplications to God for their needs. These are known as dua. There are many standard invocations in Arabic to be recited at various times, and for various occasions. E.g. for one's parents, after Salât, before eating. Muslims may also say dua in their own words and languages for any issue they wish to communicate with God in the hope that God will answer their prayers. Virtues, Benefits and Importance of PrayerAccording To Quran o Hadiths: The importance of the prayer in Islam cannot be understated. It is the first pillar of Islam that the Prophet, may the mercy and blessings of Allah be upon him, mentioned after mentioning the Testimony of Faith, by which one becomes a Muslim. It was made obligatory upon all the prophets and for all peoples. God has declared its obligatory status under majestic circumstances. For example, when God spoke directly to Moses, He said, “And I have chosen you, so listen to that which is inspired to you. Verily, I am God! There is none worthy of worship but I, so worship Me and offer prayer perfectly for My remembrance.” (Quran 20:13-14)
  • 5. 4 | P a g e Similarly, the prayers were made obligatory upon the Prophet Muhammad during his ascension to heaven. Furthermore, when God praises the believers, such as in the beginning of the chapter entitled ‘Al-Muminoon’ (the Believers), one of the first descriptions He states is their adherence to the prayers. Once a man asked the Prophet about the most virtuous deed. The Prophet stated that the most virtuous deed is the prayer. The man asked again and again and for the first three times, the Prophet answered, “The prayer,” then on the fourth occasion he stated, “Jihad in the way of God.” The importance of prayer is demonstrated in many of the Prophet’s statements. For example, the Prophet said, “The first matter that the slave will be brought to account for on the Day of Judgment is the prayer. If it is sound, then the rest of his deeds will be sound. And if it is incomplete, then the rest of his deeds will be incomplete.” The importance of the prayers lies in the fact that no matter what actions one performs in his life, the most important aspect is one’s relationship to God, that is, one’s faith (imaan), God-consciousness (taqwa), sincerity (ikhlas) and worship of God (ibaadah). This relationship with God is both demonstrated and put into practice, as well as improved and increased, by the prayer. Therefore, if the prayers are sound and proper, the rest of the deeds will be sound and proper; and if the prayers are not sound and proper, then the rest of the deeds will not be sound and proper, as the Prophet himself stated. In reality, the prayer is performed properly – with true remembrance of God and turning to Him for forgiveness – it will have a lasting effect on the person. After he finishes the prayer, his heart will be filled with the remembrance of God. He will be fearful as well as hopeful of God. After that experience, he will not want to move from that lofty position to one wherein he disobeys God. God has mentioned this aspect of the prayer when He has said, “Verily, the prayer keeps one from the great sins and evil deeds” (Quran 29:45) Effects of Prayers in the Lights Of Quran o Hadiths: Its aim is to generate within the subliminal self of man such spiritual power, light of faith and awareness of God as can enable him to strive successfully against all kinds of evils and temptations and remain steadfast at times of trial and adversity and protect himself against the weakness of the flesh and the mischief of immoderate appetites. The overall affect that the properly performed prayers should have upon humans is described in other verses in the Quran: “Verily, man was created impatient, irritable when evil touches him and ungenerous when good touches him. Except for those devoted to prayer those who remain constant in their prayers…” (Quran 70:19-23)
  • 6. 5 | P a g e As for the Hereafter, God’s forgiveness and pleasure is closely related to the prayers. The Messenger of God said, “God has obligated five prayers. Whoever excellently performs their ablutions, prays them in their proper times, completes their bows, prostrations and khushu, has a promise from God that He will forgive him. And whoever does not do that has no promise from God. He may either forgive him or punish him.” The prayers are a type of purification for a human being. He turns and meets with his Lord five times a day. As alluded to above, this repeated standing in front of God should keep the person from doing sinful acts during the day. Furthermore, it should also be a time of remorse and repentance, such that he earnestly asks God for forgiveness for those sins that he committed. In addition, the prayer in itself is a good deed that wipes away some of the evil deeds that he performed. These points can be noted in the following hadith of the Prophet, may the mercy and blessings of God be upon him: “If a person had a stream outside his door and he bathed in it five times a day, do you think he would have any filth left on him?” The people said, “No filth would remain on him whatsoever.” The Prophet then said, “That is like the five daily prayers: God wipes away the sins by them.” (Saheeh Al-Bukhari, Saheeh Muslim) In another hadith, the Prophet said, “The five daily prayers and the Friday Prayer until the Friday prayer are expiation for what is between them.” (Saheeh Muslim) Fasting (Saum): O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous – (Surat Al-Baqarah 2:183) Saum, fasting during the holy month of Ramadan, is the fourth pillar of Islam. Ordained in the Holy Qur'an, the fast is an act of deep personal worship in which Muslims seek a richer perception of God. Fasting is also an exercise in self-control whereby one's sensitivity is heightened to the sufferings of the poor. Ramadan, the month during which the Holy Qur'an was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad, begins with the sighting of the new moon, after which abstention from eating, drinking and other sensual pleasures is obligatory from dawn to sunset. Ramadanis also a joyful month. Muslims break their fast at sunset with a special meal, iftar, perform additional nocturnal worship, tarawih, after evening prayer; and throng the streets in
  • 7. 6 | P a g e moods that are festive and communal. The end of Ramadan is observed by three days of celebration called Eid Al-Fitr, the feast of the breaking of the fast. Customarily, it is a time for family reunion and the favored holiday for children who receive new clothing and gifts. Ramadan is the 9th month of the lunar calendar which Muslims follow. This month is very important in Islam as it was in this month the Quranic revelations started. During this month Muslims must fast from sunrise to sunset, abstaining from all food and drink. Apart from that we must also not have any sexual contact, it is strongly recommended to wake up before sunrise to have a meal, as fasting is not there to make life difficult for you, Allah does not want anyone to suffer. Following the tradition of prophet Muhammad Muslims break their fast at sunset with dates and water. Those who are sick, on a journey, young children, elderly and women who are pregnant or nursing a child may break their fast but have to make up for days lost at a later time. You are forbidden to fast if fasting will endanger your life, also women who are menstruating are forbidden to fast but must make up for the days lost. If someone is physically unable to fast they must feed a needy person for each day missed. Children start fasting (and praying) from puberty although many start before. Although fasting is beneficial for the health, it is regarded principally as a method of self- purification. During fasting you are cut off from worldly pleasures and comforts. When fasting you gain sympathy for those who go hungry on a daily basis, so you are more willing to help them. While fasting you achieve spiritual growth, you learn discipline, self-restraint, patience and flexibility.During the month of Ramadan a Muslim should read the entire Quran, from cover to cover. Also during Ramadan there are special prayers each evening after Isha prayers. These prayers are called Tarawih. The Quran is divided into 30 parts called Juz, and each evening one of these parts are recited so that the whole of the Quran will be completed at the end of Ramadan. During the last 10 days of Ramadan there is a special night called the Night of Power (Laylat al-Qadr). To spend this whole night in prayer and worship is equivalent to a thousand months of worship, so Allah's reward for this is very great. On the first day after the end of Ramadan, which is when the next moon is visible, the festival of Eid ul Fitr is celebrated and fasting stops. On this day Muslims who are able to will feed the poor, called Zakat al-Fitr. On the day of Eid Muslims put on their best clothes and attend Eid prayers at the mosque. After this the day is normally spend celebrating with family and friends. Fasting in the month of Ramadan is obligatory, but apart from Ramadan there are other voluntary fasts throughout the year. Muslims are encouraged to fast six days of the month of Shawwal which is the month following Ramadan. Also Mondays and Thursdays are recommended for fasting and the three middle days of each month. Another day recommended for fasting is the day of Ashura, which is the 10th day of Muharram, which is the first month
  • 8. 7 | P a g e of the lunar calendar. It was on this day that prophet Moses (as) and his followers were saved and the pharaoh was drowned. Fasting on the days of Eid is strictly forbidden in Islam. Benefits of Fasting In The Lights Of Hadiths: Abu Hurayrah, May Allah be pleased with him, narrated that Allah’s Apostle, Salla Allahu Alayhi Wasallam, said, what translated means, “Allah said, ‘All the deeds of the son of Adam are for him: the good deeds will be multiplied ten times to seven hundred time, except fasting, which is for Me and I will reward for it accordingly. He abandons his (sexual) desire, food and drink for Me.’ Verily, there are two joyous and pleasurable moments for the fasting person: one at the time of breaking his fast, and the other is when he will meet his Lord (in the Hereafter). Verily, the unpleasant odor emanating from the mouth of the fasting person is better in the sight of Allah than the scent of musk.” [Al-Bukhari & Muslim]. This noble Hadith contains numerous virtues and benefits that can only be attained from fasting. It also indicates the importance of fasting in Islam and its obligation upon all Muslims. 1. Multiplying the rewards for fasting is different than the rest of the acts of worship and good deeds. As for fasting, there is no limit for such multiplication, while in the case of other deeds, each good credit is multiplied from ten to seven hundred times only. 2. Sincerity while fasting counts more than sincerity while performing other deeds, for Allah said in the Hadith, “He abandons his (sexual) desire, food and drink for Me.” 3. Allah has chosen fasting to be the acts of worship that He Himself will reward for it, for He said, “Fasting is for Me, and I will reward for it accordingly.” 4. Fasting brings about two great occasions of joy and happiness for the fasting person: one in this life, and that is when he breaks his fast with what Allah has allowed for him of foods and drinks. As for the other, it is in the Hereafter, and that is when he receives the rewards for his fast. This is permissible happiness and joy, just as Allah said, what translated means, "Say, “In the Bounty of Allah, and in His Mercy (i.e. Islam and the Quran); therein let them rejoice.”" [10:58].
  • 9. 8 | P a g e 5. The odor emanating from the mouth of the fasting person, which is sometimes foul, is more beloved to Allah than the scent of musk. This is because such bad odor is the result of a deed that Allah loves, and He therefore loves the resulting odor as well. This is clear from the portion of the Hadith that reads, “The unpleasant odor emanating from the mouth of a fasting person is better in the sight of Allah than the scent of musk.” 6. Among the benefits of fasting is that Allah has designated one of the gates of Paradise solely for those who frequently fast. The Prophet Salla Allahu Alayhi Wasallam said, what translated means, “There is a gate in Paradise called Ar-Rayyan, and those who frequently fast will enter through it on the Day of Resurrection, and none except them shall enter through it. It will be said, ‘Where are those who used to fast?’ They will stand up, and none except them will enter through it. Upon entry, that gate will be closed and no one else will enter through it.” [Al-Bukhari]. 7. Fasting is a shield and protection from harmful desires and from the heat of Hell, as an authentic Hadith affirms. 8. The supplication of the fasting person is accepted. The Messenger of Allah, Salla Allahu Alayhi Wasallam, said, what translated means, “The fasting person has at the time of breaking his fast a Du’aa’ that is not rejected.” [Ibn Majah & Al-’Hakim]. Also, Allah Almighty said while referring to fasting, "And when My slaves ask you (O Mohammad) concerning Me, then answer them, I am indeed near (to them by My Knowledge). I respond to the invocations of the supplicant when he calls on Me (without any mediator or intercessor)." [2:186]. 9. Another benefit of fasting is that It teaches man the principle of sincere Love: because when he observes Fasting he does it out of deep love for God. And the man who loves God truly is a man who really knows what love is. 10. It indoctrinates man in patience and selflessness, as through fasting, he feels the pains of deprivation but he endures them patiently. The Prophet Salla Allahu Alayhi Wasallam said, what translated means, “Fasting is one half of patience.” [At-Tirmithi & Ibn Majah].
  • 10. 9 | P a g e Conditions: “Throughout the duration of the fast itself, Muslims will abstain from certain provisions that the Quran has otherwise allowed; namely eating, drinking, and sexual intercourse.” [Quran 2:187] This is in addition to the standard obligation already observed by Muslims of avoiding that which is not permissible under Quranic or Shari'ah law (e.g. ignorant and indecent speech, arguing and fighting, and lustful). Without observing this standard obligation, Saum is rendered useless, and is seen simply as an act of starvation. The fasting should be a motive to be more benevolent to the fellow-creatures. Charity to the poor and needy in this month is one of most reward able worship. “(Fasting) for a fixed number of days; but if any of you is ill, or on a journey, the prescribed number (should be made up) from days later. For those who can do it (with hardship), is a ransom, the feeding of one that is indigent. But he that will give more, of his own free will, it is better for him. And it is better for you that ye fast, if ye only knew.” 2:184 If one is sick, nursing or traveling, one is considered exempt from fasting. Any fasts broken or missed due to sickness, nursing or traveling must be made up whenever the person is able before the next month of Ramadan. According to the Quran, for all other cases, not fasting is only permitted when the act is potentially dangerous to one's health - for example; those elderly who are too weak to fast for extended periods of time, diabetics, nursing, and pregnant women, but this must be made up by paying a fidyah which is essentially the iftaar, dinner and suhur for a fasting person who requires such financial help. According to the Quran and the Sunnah, if someone cannot afford fasting due to illness or traveling they are permitted to suspend fasting and continue at a more opportune time or condition of health. However, the question of those suffering a permanent disease has not been resolved. One view is that they can waive the obligation to fast if advised by a medical expert. Furthermore, it is held that they can provide a poor person with a meal for each day of fasting waived. Nonetheless, such a delinquent person must be willing to fast when in health. Social Benefits: Fasting has numerous other virtues and benefits, but we only mention a few to drive home the point to the reader. 1. It teaches man the principle of sincere Love: because when he observes Fasting he does it out of deep love for God. And the man who loves God truly is a man who really knows what love is. 2. It equips man with a creative sense of hope and an optimistic outlook on life; because when he fasts he is hoping to please God and is seeking His Grace. 3. It imbues in man the genuine virtue of effective devotion, honest dedication and closeness to God; because when he fasts he does so for God and for His sake alone. 4. It cultivates in man a vigilant and sound conscience; because the fasting person keeps his fast in secret as well as in public. In fasting, especially, there is no mundane authority to check man's behavior or compel him to observe fasting. He keeps it to
  • 11. 10 | P a g e please God and satisfy his own conscience by being faithful in secret and in public. There is no better way to cultivate sound conscience in man. 5. It indoctrinates man in patience and selflessness, as through fasting, he feels the pains of deprivation but he endures them patiently. 6. It is an effective lesson in applied moderation and willpower. 7. Fasting also provides man with a transparent soul, a clear mind and a light body. 8. It shows man a new way of wise savings and sound budgeting. 9. It enables man to master the art of Mature Adaptability. We can easily understand the point once we realize that fasting makes man change the entire course of his daily life. 10. It grounds man in discipline and healthy survival. 11. It originates in man the real spirit of social belonging, unity and brotherhood, of equality before God as well as before the law. 12. It is a Godly prescription for self-reassurance and self-control. Medical Benefits of Fasting: DIABETES MELLITUS AND RAMADAN FASTING: Diabetes mellitus affects people of all faiths. Muslims are no exception. Many diabetic Muslims have a desire to fast during the month of Ramadan, although if they cannot for health reasons, they have a valid exemption. The dilemma for physicians and Muslim scholars is whether or not Muslim diabetic patients (1) Should be allowed to fast if they decide to; (2) Can fast safely; (3) Can be helped to fast if they decide to; (4) Can have their disease monitored at home; and (5) Are going to derive any benefit or harm to their health. Fasting during Ramadan by a Muslim diabetic patient is neither his right nor Islamic obligation, but only a privilege to be allowed by his physician, at the patient's request, knowing all the dangers and assuming full responsibility in dietary compliance and glucose monitoring, with good communication between the physician and the patient . PSYCHOLOGICAL STATE OF DIABETES DURING RAMADAN: Diabetes mellitus itself adversely affects patients' psychological states by changes in glucose metabolism, blood and CSF osmolality, needs for discipline and compliance, fear of long term complications and threat of hypoglycemic attacks and the possibility of dehydration and coma.
  • 12. 11 | P a g e On the other hand, fasting during Ramadan has a tranquilizing effect on the mind, producing inner peace and decrease in anger and hostility. Fasting Muslims realize that manifestations of anger may take away the blessings of fasting or even nullify them. Diabetics know that stress increases the blood glucose by increasing the catecholamine level and any tool to lower the stress; i.e., biofeedback or relaxation improves diabetic control. Thus, Zakat: Zakat is the Fourth Pillar of Islam. It is an obligation (Fard), prescribed by God on those Muslim men and women who possess enough means, to distribute a certain percentage of their annual savings or capital in goods or money among the poor and the needy. Zakat is assessed once a year on both capital and savings from income. “Who believe in the unseen, establish prayer, and spend out of what We have provided for them” (Surat Al-Baqarah 2:3) Receptors of Zakat According to Quran: Qur'an discusses charity in many verses, some of which relate to zakat. The word zakat, with the meaning used in Islam now, is found in many suras. Zakat is found in the early Medinan suras. In the quranic view, zakat is obligatory, but considered more than taxation. Those who are eligible to receive zakat are mentioned in the Holy Qur'an. “Zakah expenditures are only for the poor and for the needy and for those employed to collect [zakah] and for bringing hearts together [for Islam] and for freeing captives [or slaves] and for those in debt and for the cause of Allah and for the [stranded] traveler - an obligation [imposed] by Allah. And Allah is Knowing and Wise.” (Surat At-Tawbah 9:60) It should be remembered that these categories of persons who are to be helped by zakat were laid down fourteen hundred years ago. They are equally applicable to our own time. 1. The poor: Those who does not have anything to support themselves. 2. The needy: Those people who have some income or earnings but it is not enough to provide them with basic needs. 3. Zakat collectors: The salaries of these workers may be paid from this fund. 4. Converts: Those people who have embraced Islam and. Attempts should be made to settle them in a normal life. 5. People who are not free: This category would include payment of ransom for freeing Muslim salves from slavery from their owners.
  • 13. 12 | P a g e 6. Debtors: People who are unable to pay debts incurred due to pressing lawful needs. 7. Wayfarers and travelers: Those people who are rendered helpless outside their city. 8. In the Cause of Allah According to Hadith: Abu Hurairah narrated: That the Prophet said: "When you pay the Zakat you have fulfilled what is required of you." (Jami` at-Tirmidhi 618, Book 7, Hadith 2) Nisaab of Zakat: Each of the most trusted hadiths in Islam have a book dedicated to zakat. Sahih Bukhari's Book 24, Sahih Muslim's Book 5, and Sunan Abu-Dawud Book 9 discuss various aspects of zakat, including who must pay, how much, when and what. The 2.5% rate is also recited in the hadiths. The hadiths admonish those who do not give the zakat. According to the hadith, refusal to pay or mockery of those who pay zakat is a sign of hypocrisy, and God will not accept the prayers of such people. The Sunnah also describe God's punishment for those who refuse or fail to pay zakat. On the Day of Judgment, those who didn't give the zakat will be held accountable and punished. The hadith contain advice on the state-authorized collection of the zakat. The collectors are required not to take more than what is due, and those who are paying the zakat are asked not to evade payment. The hadith also warn of punishment to those who take zakat when they are not eligible to receive it. Benefits of Zakat: 1. The first and the most important benefit of zakat is the purification of the halal money. Once zakat is paid, money becomes pure and in goes under the assurance of ALLAH (Subhanahu wa ta'ala). Hence a person who is zakat payer will never see short of rizq except ALLAH’s will. 2. Zakat keeps the money flow inside society in balance and constant. The sahib-e nisab pay zakat which is gotten by poor people hence the money inflow remains same and constant. 3. The money flow in a Muslim zakat paying society is downward i.e. from top to bottom. In this way what rich people have they also give a share of it to the poor people and keep them live like humans unlike the life of the poor we see today. 4. It eradicates begging. 5. Unemployment erases because progressive economy always needs more and more workers.
  • 14. 13 | P a g e 6. The moral degradation of society lowers and ultimately finishes because the frustration of people and their depression lowers down. 7. A progressive economy makes a strong state. Hajj: Introduction: Hajj and its importance to Muslims? Hajj is a once in a lifetime pilgrimage of Muslims to Mecca. It is in Saudi Arabia, in the Middle East in Asia. Hajj should be performed at least once in a Muslims lifetime. For Muslims, the Hajj is the fifth and final pillar of Islam. It occurs in the month of Dhul Hijjah, which is the twelfth month of the Islamic calendar. The hajj makes Muslims feel the real importance of life here on earth, and the after-life and shows the real meaning of life. During the Hajj, the pilgrims perform act of worship, and ask forgiveness. The Kaba plays a big part in the Hajj; it is the centre, because Muslims go around it seven times. Ibrahim and his son Ismail built the Kaba, about four thousand years before Mohammed was born. The quote from the Quaran says, "And perform properly (i.e. all the ceremonies according to the ways of Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h.)), the Hajj and Umrah (i.e. the pilgrimage to Makkah) for Allah. “ (Quran: 2/196) Muslims should perform Hajj, if they can afford it, the quote from the Quaran says, "And complete the Hajj and 'umrah for Allah . But if you are prevented, then [offer] what can be obtained with ease of sacrificial animals.” (2:196) Only 5% of the Muslim population get to go on Hajj every year. This is a very small percentage of the Muslim population. Middle: Being present at Arafat is the most important part of the pilgrimage without it the Hajj is not complete, “When at Arafat we know they should concentrate on Allah”. 2:197 After the pilgrims have travelled to Muzdalifah in time for the evening prayers, they camp at Muzdalifah overnight. When the pilgrims are at Muzdalifah they collect 49 stones. On the 10th of Dhul Hijjah the pilgrims travel from Muzdalifah to Mina. At Mina there are 3 stone pillars these represent the Devil. Also on that day the pilgrims throw 7 stones at one of the pillars. They continue this ritual on the 11th and 12th of Dhul Hijjah. On the 11th they throw 7 stones at each of the 3 pillars and on the 12th they again throw 7 stones at each of the 3 pillars. The reason for this practice is because it reminds the pilgrims of Ibrahim and his son Ismail. Ibrahim
  • 15. 14 | P a g e and his son withstood the temptation by throwing stones at the devil. The purpose and meaning of this ritual is a much more personal one. As the pilgrims Stone the Devil, they are expressing their own rejection of evil and their own resolve to withstand any temptations, which may appear their way. While Muslims are not stoning the devil they recite the Talbiyah. After the ritual stoning the Devil has been done many pilgrims sacrifice an animal, usually a sheep, goat or even a camel. "... And the camels we have made a part of Allah's rites. Pronounce over them the name of Allah as they have fallen down on their sides eat their flesh and feed it to the poor and the beggar". 2:235 Before the sacrifice the pilgrims take off their Ihram and put on their normal clothes. Conclusion: You have to have a right frame of mind and be fully focused on your task. You really have to mean it be committed to it fully as possible and show total loyalty towards Allah and keep yourself clean and have a stable mind of frame. However some may disagree with this statement. They may say that even if the pilgrim has not the right frame of mind, they still performed it like it says in the Quaran to do the fifth pillar of Islam means you're a true Muslim. I believe that a Muslim should act upon as a good Muslim and be committed to their faith and truly to their pilgrimage. Also a real pilgrimage is when you mean it from the bottom of your heart. Also when someone goes to pilgrimage because there family forces them to go and the person is not ready to go but has to then this means that the person will not be truly committed to the task ahead. However I conclude from all this a true pilgrimage is definitely from some sort of way, not matter where you are or even if you don't get to perform the rituals your true pilgrimage is accepted or within when you are so dedicated in going on Hajj for the right reasons, right intention and right frame of mind and if you take a true understanding of what is right from wrong. You have to perform the physical activities to show your devotion to Allah, but it must be done with the right niyyah (INTENSION).
