FARO COMMUNIQUÉ
2021-09 #6 FARO CONVENTION NETWORK
Call for Papers: The
Faro Convention
Implementation
This call for papers could tie-in
with the invitation to self
assessment, which formed part
of our Coffee Talk in May
facilitated by Eleonora
Giovene and Maria Cerretta.
For instance, it would be
interesting if Faro members
who are testing their self-
assessment approach could
consider submitting a paper
about their progress so far.
The role and function of
citizens’ participation, opens
the door to a multitude of
possible new collaborations
and innovative ways of
promoting the development of
cultural sites, communities and
heritage..
Deadline is 26/09/ 2021

Who wants to join the
Faro Network?
One group that has signalled
interest is an informal
association established in
2013. Activities of the informal
association Madness on the
border / Wahnsinn an der
Grenze, resulted in the
foundation of the Museum of
Madness in 2014 as a private
institute in Trate (northeastern
Slovenia). The project was
spurred by the sinister
presence of the Cmurek
Castle, which functioned as an
institution for mentally
disabled from 1956 till 2004.
Nine years after its
abandonment the castle
became the nexus for a local
Slovenian-Austrian initiative
focused on a somewhat
provocative re-evaluation of
madness. READ

online seminar: , Heritage,
Education and Schoo
Sept 29/30 2021.
The two-day seminar aims to
deepen links between schools
and cultural heritage with
inputs from specialists in the
field of education and cultural
heritage. It will target:
teachers and others from
primary and secondary
education interested in
heritage education. It is hoped
to open a line of dialogue and
exchange between teachers
and managers of heritage
institutions to redefine
heritage education programs
and adapt them to the learning
needs of students; This
motivated four institutions with
a lot to do with heritage and
education to join forces to
propose an activity that had
precisely those objectives.

Europa Nostra prize

Education in Finland (AHEF) in partnership with La Fundación San
Millán de la Cogolla (FSMC) in Spain, Urban Development Centre
(UDC) in Serbia and VITECO E-learning solutions in Italy.

The Jury was especially appreciative of the project’s methodology:
“Heritage Hubs has provided a strong methodology on heritage
education, implemented by many schools. Capacity building
has been provided for the programme’s partners and many
materials have been created, also in a digital format, to help aid
creative interaction with the wider community. This includes a
combination of virtual and real-life experiences of heritage with
transmedia storytelling and multisensory activities. The
educational approach is based on the concept of learning from
heritage, with participants exchanging their own heritage with
other participants, learning through other cultures and the
exchange of experiences.” Nominations for the 2022 Europa
Nostra awards will open in October 2021.

Artistic organization of the Co-Roma
Throughout September, Co-
Roma are active with artistic
workshops, the launch of a
participation mural and the
Living Memory Exhibition (LME).
The context is unique: an urban
cultural district located in
Southeast Rome. It includes the
Alessandrino, Centocelle and
Torre Spaccata (ACT)
neighbourhoods. A number of
archeological sites with remains
from Roman, Medieval and Post-
industrial times, but for years now they have been underexplored or
abandoned. Artistic strategies contribute to regenerate the area,
contributing to make the community aware of the great potential of
their territory.

Faro Experiences:
Marseille and Córdoba
Thatday on the slag heap, Karima
explains to students destined for social
work, the emotion she had with other
local moms daring to venture out for the
first time. The walk and plants
encountered became quite a source of
childhood memories. Recipes, dishes
and stories were recalled once spoken
by a mother or grandmother. Walking
along the land produced both intimate
sensations with collective resonance for
the women. And then there was a
moment when the imagination went
beyond the awakening of memory, the
moment, "Where we crossed a border,
where we jumped the wall… We ate
poppies ”.In the midst of the slag heap,
also testifying to this urban system
where traders and industrialists set up
their production equipment (oil mills,
soap factories, light industries, etc) in
their own "Garden", Karima tells us
about the feeling of freedom, new
attachment, joy to be there, the return
to childhood and curiosity. Little by
little stories of this multiverse -where all
cultures have their place; the water too,
the trees on the banks and animals –
resonated for humans with a possible
common goal: to act for the river.

María is 92 years old and is living all
her life in a patio in the district of
Axerquía. Maria’s granddaughter,
Fuensanta, arrived with a mobile
smartphone app. Using it, she
uploaded images of her grandmother’s
patio and interviewed her grandmother
about the patio, how the space was
shared and the freshness of the summer
thanks to its shadow and vegetation.
The app invites Fuensanta to explore
the courtyard and to record other
personal narratives of the patios.
They go to the laundry and she records
her grandmother memoirs about when
there was no washing machine and all
the women used to wash by hand. María
sings a song she used to sing while
doing the laundry. Fuensanta uploads a
photo of the current laundry and two
sound records: the conversation with
his grandmother and the song.
