43. In recent times, certain human activities,
including manufacturing, farming
practices, oil exploration and exploitation,
and mining, among others, have also been
identified as significant causes of recent
climate change, often referred to as ”
global warming”.
Global warming therefore implies that
temperature increase is being used as
a major indicator of climate change.

44.
45. Impacts of Climate Change:
Climate change has become one of
the most threatening environmental
problems in the world with concerns
about its impacts on human
activities.
Nigeria is concerned about climate
change because its impacts threaten
food security, cause flooding,
accidents (including aviation
accidents), aggravate drought and
cause desertification, social frictions,
conflicts and insurgency at the
extreme. 45

The Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP) is designed to support Mr. President’s Environment Transformation Agenda (ETA) to achieve greater environmental and economic security.
NEWMAP supports State-led interventions to prevent and reverse land degradation, focusing on major gully erosion sites that threaten infrastructure, livelihoods and environmental assets;
The Project was operationalized on September 16, 2013; and
Phase I of the project is on-going in the following seven States: Abia, Anambra, Cross River, Ebonyi, Edo, Enugu & Imo.
