3. Soil degradation is threatening food security
and water availability, increasing social
economic inequality and depleting ecosystems
in the NENA region, particularly through
desertification.

7. This document aims to uncover the multiple roles of soil
in achieving food security, addressing water scarcity,
climate change and involuntary migration
8. Objectives of this session
• Raise the awareness of policy makers on the multi-
faced role of soil in the NENA Region
• Discuss strategies to strengthen national and
regional legal frameworks aimed at preserving and
sustainably managing soil resources.
Is the production of documents like the one presented
in here useful?
What else can we do to trigger actions on policy at the
national and regional levels?
9. Future priorities for the Global Soil Partnership
- Continue to work closely with NENA partners as well
as with other Government Departments with an
interest in soil policy in the NENA region;
- Support NENA member countries in promoting and
implementing sustainable soil management activities;
- Advocate for increasing investment in sustainable soil
management at national level in order to improve soil
functions; and
- Support countries in establishing national soil
information and monitoring systems.
This document was written under the framework of the Global Soil Partnership, a global mechanism that promotes soil conservation through the practice of sustainable soil management. The GSP covers all aspects related to the assessment, management and monitoring of soil resources (5 Pillars of Action). It operates through Regional Soil Partnerships, which meet on a regular basis to review national and regional priorities and plan activities on soil accordingly.
During the 4th NENA Soil Partnership meeting in June 2018, countries highlighted the need…
..to raise the awareness of policy makers on the need to preserve and better manage soil resources. This, while acknowledging that over time much attention was given to water resources only, overlooking the role that soils play in the water cycle though.
Recognizing the role of policy in triggering actions and investments on soil protection, this policy brief is addressed to policy makers
