10. What God Wants
Of his own will he brought us forth by
the word of truth, that we should be a
kind of first fruits of his creatures.
James 1:18 10
12. Process
Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet
trials of various kinds, for you know that the
testing of your faith produces steadfastness.
And let steadfastness have its full effect, that
you may be perfect and complete, lacking in
nothing.
James 1:2â4 12

Steadfastness or Endurance
Perfect and Complete
Trials are a means to an end
14. It not just mountain top experiences
Consider, think about it, not a reaction. The
mature believer focuses on the spiritual realm
and thus rejoices at the prospect of spiritual
development and holds it more dear than physical
complacency and comfort.

16. The Source
If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who
gives generously to all without reproach, and it will
be given him. But let him ask in faith, with no
doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of
James 1:5â8 16
17. The Source
the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. For
that person must not suppose that he will receive
anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man,
unstable in all his ways.
James 1:5â8 17
21. Brotherhood of Equality
Let the lowly brother boast in his exaltation, and the
rich in his humiliation, because like a flower of the
grass he will pass away. For the sun rises with its
scorching heat and withers the grass; its flower falls,
and its beauty perishes. So will the rich man fade
away in the midst of his pursuits.
James 1:9â11 21
25. Origin
Let no one say when he is tempted, âI am being
tempted by God,â for God cannot be tempted with
evil, and he himself tempts no one. But each person
is tempted when he is lured and enticed
James 1:13â16 25
26. Origin
by his own desire. Then desire when it has
conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully
grown brings forth death. Do not be deceived, my
beloved brothers.
James 1:13â16 26
30. Produce
Know this, my beloved brothers: let every
person be quick to hear, slow to speak,
slow to anger; for the anger of man does
not produce the righteousness of God.
James 1:19â20 30
31. Good and Perfect Gift
Of his own will he brought us forth by
the word of truth, that we should be a
kind of first fruits of his creatures.
James 1:18 31
32. Contrast to the Word of God
âŠbe quick to hear, slow to speak, slow
to anger; for the anger of man does
not produce the righteousness of God.
32
34. Chosen to be first fruits
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from
above, coming down from the Father of lights,
with whom there is no variation or shadow due
to change. Of his own will he brought us forth
by the word of truth, that we should be a kind
of first fruits of his creatures.
James 1:17â18 34
36. Blessed
Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under
trial, for when he has stood the test he will
receive the crown of life, which God has
promised to those who love him.
James 1:12 36
James 1:22 (ESV) But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
James
James 1:1 James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, To the twelve tribes in the Dispersion: Greetings.
James the half-brother of Jesus
Initially not a follower of Jesus
Had an encounter with the resurrected Jesus
Leader of the early church in Jerusalem
12 dispersed tribes of Christian Jews
Scattered- Acts 8:1b And there arose on that day a great persecution against the church in Jerusalem, and they were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles.
Apply the New Covenant to daily life to first century Jews living in pagan settings
Trials lead to perfection 1:2â4
Wisdom is available for the asking 1:5â8
Eternal life is the only true value 1:9â12
God is not the source of temptation 1:13â16
God intends believers to advertise His grace, not His anger 1:17â20
James first addresses five practical Christian principles which frequently puzzle the believer, and which, when misunderstood, undermine his ability to be what God wants him to be
James 1:18 Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.
We generally think of salvation from our perspectiveâwhat we get out of itâbut this verse confronts us with the other side of the coinâGod also expects something from our salvation. The mature believer, then, recognizes that he was saved to serve, while the immature believer, like a child, focuses only on the personal benefits of his relationship with God.
James 1:2â4 (ESV)
Trials and Faith
Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.
Joy production
Test of faith- genuineness
Steadfastness or Endurance production is a process not an event
Perfect and Complete fully equipped, mature or even ripe
Consider, think about it, not a reaction. The mature believer focuses on the spiritual realm and thus rejoices at the prospect of spiritual development and holds it dearer than physical complacency and comfort.
The trials are not the source of joy but their possible results
Trials purify faith, produce patience or endurance, produce maturity
James 1:5â8
Wisdom and Faith
If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of
the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.

James 1:9â12
Equality of Brotherhood
Let the lowly brother boast in his exaltation, and the rich in his humiliation, because like a flower of the grass he will pass away. For the sun rises with its scorching heat and withers the grass; its flower falls, and its beauty perishes. So also will the rich man fade
Paul would say Jew or Greek, slave or free, male or female, barbarian or Scythian, we are all made to drink of one spirit, same Lord,
In the true church
Poor exalted
Rich lowered
All are the same status in the Body of Christ
James 1:9â12
Temptationâs nature
Let no one say when he is tempted, âI am being tempted by God,â for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed
by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death. Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers.
Donât Blame God
God cannot be tempted
God doesnât tempt
Your desire
Leads to sin
Sin leads to death
âSin will take you farther than you want to go, keep you longer than you want to stay, and cost you more than you want to pay. ââ
â R Zaccharias

From the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks
