A blast of Arctic air gripped much of the United States, bringing record-breaking cold temperatures not seen in years. Photos showed snow-covered streets, icy landscapes, and people bundled up against bitter winds. The extreme cold closed schools and government offices from Missouri to New York and caused dangerous driving conditions. Temperatures plunged to well below zero in many areas, putting residents in danger of frostbite and forcing them to take shelter indoors.
