20. Smart Energy
› The energy grid is being transformed from a reactively
managed, uni-directional energy system to a pro-actively
managed bi-directional energy system (Frost & Sullivan,
Forrester market research reports)
› The smart energy system relies on the widespread roll-out
of near real-time communications and data analysis in
order to maintain the stability of the energy system
› The roll-out of smart meters is well advanced in most of
Europe while the roll-out of electric vehicles is planned
and will be a strong contributor to CO2 reduction goals
› The energy distribution network has to be upgraded with
ICT
› Trials of ICT in smart energy use cases are now on-going
and full scale roll-out will follow generating many large
scale big data use cases!

› Rapid evolution and growth of vertical sectors is being enabled by
– New communications networks (LTE, optical, etc), together with
– the introduction of Open Interfaces (API’s) with new apps for end
users
› High network capacity will be needed to cope with the
demand for bandwidth and low latency for many uses
› Data privacy issues need to be managed carefully to
ensure the acceptability of applications to users
› Big data capture, storage and analysis technologies
will be a critical element essential to enable this potential
for economic growth!
› The next level for verticals is coming and will generate
economic growth and jobs in Europe!
