2. • What is motion ?
• In what motion does the fan rotate?
• Is motion studied as a different
branch of physics?
• Lets see it in the presentation…..
3. Definition:-
When a body is
continuously changing its
position with respect to the
frame of reference , then
we say that the body is in
motion.
What is motion?
4. EXAMPLE :
• An athlete running in a race
continuously changes his position
on the track with respect to the
audience that watches him!
5. EXAMPLE :
• A car constantly changes its
position with respect to the
given path!
6. EXAMPLE 2:
The earth is continuously changing position with
respect to sun which is at rest (sun is at rest
with respect to our solar system!) .
7. SCALARS AND VECTORS
• The motion of objects can be described by words
- words such as distance, displacement, speed,
velocity, and acceleration.
• These mathematical quantities which are used to
describe the motion of objects can be divided
into two categories. The quantity is either a
vector or a scalar. These two categories can be
distinguished from one another by their distinct
definitions:
8. What are the
different types of motion?
• Linear motion
• Curvilinear motion (circular)
1. Rotatory motion
2. Revolution motion
• Oscillatory motion
• Reciprocatory motion (vibration)
• Brownian motion
10. Linear Motion
When a body moves in a straight line then the
linear motion is called or linear motion or
rectilinear motion.
• The motion of a particle (a point-like object) along
the line can be described by its position x, which
varies with t (time).
Example :-
An athlete running a 100 meter race along a straight
track is said to be a linear motion or rectilinear
motion.
11. Linear Motion
• It can be described mathematically using
only one spatial dimension.
• It can be uniform, that is, with
constant velocity or non-uniform, that is, with
a variable velocity.
• The average velocity v during a finite time
span of a particle undergoing linear motion is
equal to :-
V= Δd/Δt
12. Curvilinear Motion
When a body moves along a curved path
then the motion is called curvilinear motion.
• There are two types of curvilinear motion:-
1. Rotatory Motion
2. Revolution Motion
13. Rotatory Motion
• Rotatory motion :
A body is said to be in Rotatory motion
when it stays at one place and turns
round and round about an axis.
Example : a rotating fan, a spinning top,
the earth.
14. Kinematics :
It deals with the study of motion of
bodies Without any reference to the
cause of motion.
16. Oscillatory Motion
• Oscillatory motion :
A body is said to be in oscillatory motion
when it swings to and fro about a mean
position.
example : the pendulum of a clock, the
swing etc.,
17. Physics Related To
Motion
• Mechanics :
It is an important branch of physics and
deals with the effect of force on bodies.
• It is further divided into two parts:-
1.Dynamics
2.Kinematics
