2. Introduction
In this slide show, I am going to ask the impact technology has had on peoples lives over time using
statistics and graphs as well as explanations and examples of how technology today differs to how it
was in the past years. Similarly, I will also discuss how the evolution of technology has had the ability
to design the products that we use today which actually allows us to have access to the internet.
3. The Birth of the Internet
⢠In the 1960s, the internet was introduced in order to transmit data between U.S government
computers. The users were mainly researchers, engineers and scientists.
â˘It wasnât until January 1st, 1983 that it could be said that the internet was officially born.
â˘Different networks had their own way of communicating and not together as whole. Similarly as
when the internet was officially born in 1983, a procedure was introduced and put in place called:
Transfer Control Protocol/ Internetwork Protocol which enabled all networks to now be connected
together as a whole. (Leiner, 1997)
â˘The next ten years after this, technology was seen to have developed more and people did not have
to own large expensive computers as they had access to the internet.
â˘(Simon Kemp, 2020)
4. Access to the Internet
⢠There has been an increase of 7% and 298 million new users since January 2019 compared to January
2020.
⢠More than 4.5 billion people are stated to use the internet.
⢠Data analysts of the digital reports 2020 state that internet users spend 6 hours and 43 minutes online
each day. This means that there are more possibilities of doing things online compared to before when the
internet was not evolved.
â˘Examples are: shopping online, watching movies on Netflix instead of renting out dvds, interacting through
social media platforms and email compared to letters and post etc. There are also more work opportunities
with the internet due to the evolution of the internet and such work has users on the internet most of the
day.
â˘(Simon Kemp, 2020)
5. Statistics
Data demonstrating the total population that has access to the internet and the population of what people can have access to the internet with,
which are mobile phones. Following, the population of internet users and active social media users.
(We Are Social Ltd, 2008-2020)
6. Changes in the
number of people
accessing the
internet
⢠In 1990 only half of the worldâs population were accessing the internet
compared to today.
⢠This was because they had limited access as only a few computers were
connected to a network.
⢠In some parts of the world it started to change in the 1990s.
⢠By the 2000s the US started to have more access to information from the
internet with half the population of the country.
⢠But still most countries across the world were still offline until in 2016, 76%
of the US had access to the internet.
Percentages of countries population of other parts of the country who have
caught up in 2016:
Malaysia with 79%
Spain and Singapore 81%
France 86%
South Korea and Japan 93%
Denmark and Norway 97%
Iceland had the most access with 98% of the population using the internet.

population and total
numbers of people
using the internet

viewers can zoom in and see that it
fits data for every year from 1990-
2016.
⢠Although it doesnât present
information from today it
demonstrates how much the access
to internet has grown over time.
⢠These years in the chart are
significant years in how the internet
has evolved overtime.
8. Internet Speeds
Top 10 ranking of average internet speeds in
the world with Taiwan sitting at top. (WebFX
Team, 2020)
The reasoning of why Taiwan has the highest-
ranking internet speeds in the world is due to
the high reliance on the countries IT industry.
The Taiwanese government has invested the
digital infrastructure and to actually provide
high internet speeds for the company. (Keoni
Everington, 2020)
9. Challenges in regards to accessing the internet
â˘There are still billions of people without any
connection at all. This is due to the cost and
discrimination which keeps many people
offline.
⢠Availability: remote mobile sites cost 2-3
more than urban sites which reach fewer
people.
⢠Affordability: not everyone can afford a
mobile data plan.
â˘Relevance: this is in regards to people not
speaking the relevant content language online
as their primary language so it acts as a
language barrier.
â˘Readiness: thousands of people still lack basic
literacy skills. Other people can not cope with
the evolution of technology such as the
elderly where some do not understand the
internet.
(World Economic Forum, 2020)
10. Digital devices
used by
audiences
Smart Phones and other feature phones:
⢠Statistics show that there are 3.5 billion smart
phone users in 2020.
⢠That makes 44.81% of worlds population who own
a smart phone
⢠Number of people who use smart phones as well
as other feature phones accounts to 4.78 billion
people which is a total of 61.20% of the worlds
population. (Bankmycell, 2020)
11. Graph of global region smart phone users from 2016-2021.
The graph demonstrates an increase of users each year with every region. (Venturebeat,
2020) Mobile users continue to grow due to faster mobile connection speeds with an increase
of 19% from 2018-2019. (Oberlo, 2015-2019)
13. Why smart
phones are used
more than tablet
and desktop users
⢠Using a desktop and tablet has dropped significantly.
⢠This decline is due to people wanting to go âsmart-phone
onlyâ
⢠Desktops and tablets which are less popular than desktops in
this aspect, are used mainly for work or study.
â˘Smart phones are for daily use and much more convenient than
carrying around a desktop or tablet double or triple the size.

(Bennet, Coleman & CO, 2020)
14. Chart demonstrating users of mobile (green) vs desktop
(blue) vs tablet (purple) from September 2019 to August
2020. All are steady with not much changes and mobile users
still remains the most used compared to the other two.
(StatCounter, 1999-2020)
15. How customers search for
information
⢠There are multiple information sources that customers use some of which are: media, tv, radio and print. (MarketingSherpa, 2000-2020)
⢠89% of customers begin their buying process with a search engine
⢠Google, bing and yahoo are the most popular search engines
⢠Customers will use a sentence or word or phrase
⢠Customers use search engine for:
Research: finding an answer to a question and to learn about something.
Shopping: to find out information about a product before buying or preferring it being delivered based on customers needs.
Entertainment: such as connecting with friends on social media, keeping up with sports or watching movies.
(ThatSearchThing,com 2020)
16. Navigational
This image demonstrates the navigational source customers use to access information. This source refers to a search
where customers expect to visit a particular site. This image has youtube for an example but with regards to customers,
they would look up their favourite clothing and different sites would come up. (informaticsinc,2020)
17. Informational
This image demonstrates the
informational source that customers
use to access information where an
example is used âhow to braid your
hair?â. Customers do not need to
depend purely on sales associates as
they have this source to look up the
pros and cons of a vacuum for
instance before buying in store.
(Stewart, 2020)
.
18. Commercial
This image demonstrates the commercial
source customers use to access information
where the intention is to purchase a product
online. (BigCommerce Pty.Ltd.2003-2020)
19. This graph demonstrates several
information sources and how
effective they are. For instance,
search engines are the most
effective where customers puts
keywords in a program and it
automatically identifies items in
accordance to the keywords. This
then leads to the company website
as being the second most effective
in this graph which makes sense as
for instance a customer looks up
cakes on google, it will come up
with cake business websites.
(MarketingSherpa, 2000-2020)
20. What
consumers
buy online
TOP 5 RANKING OF WHAT CONSUMERS BUY ONLINE
â˘Fashion: $596.1 billion total spending on fashion products
which is a 25.8% expected ecommerce revenue world wide.
⢠However, recently it has demonstrated a slow growth rate
which is due to corona virus where consumers are affected due
due to many businesses shut down temporarily.
â˘Toys, hobbies and DIY: $504 billion was spent in 2020 for this
category which ranks as the second post popular.
⢠Expenditure in the two categories mentioned above account
for $1.1 trillion in 2020.
⢠Electronics and media: $481.8 billion expected sales for this
category.
⢠Perishables: $413.2 billion spent on food and personal care
⢠Furniture and appliances: $312.9 billion spent on this fifth
ranking category.
â˘(Oberlo, 2015-2020)
22. Global ecommerce sales growth experienced an evident decline
that is said to keep going until 2023.

23. Online video consumption
⢠video consumption is used in 2020 more than ever before
⢠The younger generation is more connected than the older generation as technology has developed
immensely over time
⢠In the last century there was a shift between black and white televisions to smart phones and tablets.
â˘Before, movies were rented out and had to be returned and now movies can be watched through so many
sources online and apps such as Netflix being one of the most popular.
⢠Videos can be seen all over social media, apps and search bars
â˘Video consumption is more popular compared to reading about an information or product when
customers intend to buy a product they donât have to rely completely on sales associates anymore.

25. Consumer Trends
Technology over time is said to have resolved problems and is still continuing to do so, this slide will discuss with a few
examples of how technology has changed over time and the most significant ways technology has changed over the last
few decades.
⢠Communication: in the 1980s people were using phones with a battery that could not last more than a few hours.
Today, phones are used in multiple ways one of which is having access to the whole World Wide Web. For example,
the Samsung Galaxy S9 can be attached to a dock, screen and key board and used as the base for a PC. Not only do
the phones today last longer on battery compared to the 1980s but Wifi is constantly improving with 3G, 4G and
now 5G in place offering faster connections.
⢠Transport: it wasnât until the end of world war 2 that transportation of car and plane grew. A significant time was in
Japan 1964 where the âbullet trainâ was known and started to make high-speed rail travel more accessible. In
the same year plane travel increased and was now used as the main transportation allowing people to
travel the world.
⢠Entertainment: originally music was heard on cds, movies were seen by buying or renting dvds and
cartridges for games. Today, a person doesânt need to own a product as numerous streaming services
where you can access music, movies and games.
⢠Health: technology has saved lives due to the use of ultrasounds, magnetic resonance imaging, x-rays and
lasers. This helps surgeons before preforming surgeries of patients to see what they are dealing with.
Other technologies can create new limbs or help with restructuring work.

28. Summary
In conclusion, the internet has impacted peoples lives and has shown a growth rate with every year of
more people having access to it. Challenges remain as some people still have no access to the internet due
to the challenges mentioned above, however it is exiting to see the future of technology based on
significant rapid growth rate over time.
