his death. Indians realised that
they had regained a lost

3. My Experiments With Truth
2
âI had a distaste for any reading beyond
my schoolbooks. The daily lessons had to
be done, because I disliked being taken to
task by my teacher as much as I disliked
deceiving him.â
âA relative and I become fond of smoking.
Not that we saw any good in smoking, or we
were enamoured by the smell of a cigarette.
We simply imagined a sort of pleasure in
emitting clouds of smoke from our mouths.
My uncle had the habit, and when we saw
him smoking, we thought we should copy
his example. But we had no money. So, we
began pilfering slumps of cigarettes thrown
away by my uncle.â
UNQUOTE
I was as common a child as you can think
ofâŚâŚâŚâŚ..
⢠I was not a voracious reader.
⢠I was not a flamboyant.
⢠I also had vices.
âI never took part in any exercise, cricket or
football, before they were made compulsory. My
shyness was one of the reasons for this aloofness,
which I now see was wrong. I had the false notion
that gymnastics had nothing to do with
education. Today I know that physical training
should have as much place in curriculum as
mental training.â

6. Ability to go against the tide
People initially laughed at Mahatma Gandhi
when he explained his mission to them. They
never believed that this tiny man can take on
the mighty English empire with a strong
global network.
They hardly believed that the English rulers
can be overthrown by non-violent ways.
People were confused initially to go on the
battle-field without arms. But they started
following Mahatma Gandhi once they saw his
determination, commitment & the early
results of his methods.
Created an Institution
Gandhi created a political party, Indian National
Congress with formal membership. He created
structure within the party. The leaders of the party
were democratically elected by the party cadre. The
Indian freedom struggle became systematic &
organized moment under the umbrella of this
organization.
Commitment to Mission & Vision
Mahatma came to India from South Africa with a
strong vision to bring out a social transformation
alongwith âSwarajaâ. He took up a mission to drive the
British rulers out & seek independence. He wanted to
do it with non-violent ways. Finally, he achieved the
mission & India became an independent nation.
7. Developed unique tools
Mahatma Gandhi developed certain tools to empower people & to make the freedom struggle more powerful.
'Satyagraha' was the commitment to truthfulness. 'Non-cooperation' was another effective tool which made a
ruling impossible without the active support of the people. 'Hunger Strike' was observed by him as an extreme
measure which compelled rulers to concede to his demands. All these tools became the mark of democracy.
They were the inventions of Mahatma.
Created Leaders
Mahatma Gandhi also created leaders who could
control & monitor his political party & the freedom
moment
Pandit Nehru, Sardar Patel, and many more leaders
were groomed & brought to limelight by Mahatma
Gandhi. He coached them well and then handed
over the freedom struggle to them. Once delegated
Mahatma never looked back.
Brought a change
Mahatma Gandhi was a change leader. He tried to
change his people, society, nation & the entire
humanity. His focus was on changing the perception
by changing the perspective thought process of self-
realization.
He used 'hunger strike' to strike the chord with
masses. He inflicted pain on himself rather than
others to bring the change in the behavior.
8. Leadership is not a position or a title but a highly integrated web of moral relationships between people, based on trust, and
guided by commitment, contribution, and a shared vision of the greater good.
Effective leaders establish their conduct on the high ground of ethics. All true leadership is values-based leadership.
The trustworthiness of a leader is measured not by the values the leader espouses but by how consistently the leader strives to
live up to those values. Effective leaders inspire emulation by their exemplary life and conduct. They practice what they preach
and make their life their message.
He considered morality as the basis of all things and truth as the substance of all morality. For him, any path that did not finally
lead to common good and oneness was a detour.
Champion of Value Leadership
9. One of the key lessons of Gandhiâs life and leadership is that brute force can never overcome indomitable human will. It only
redoubles the strength and courage of the unified will.
Ethical means are ends in themselves because âvirtue is its own reward.â
Master the high art of detached engagementâfor when we shift from goal-orientation to process-orientation, the results take
care of themselves.
