Course Title: Pharmacology and Therapeutics II – Lecture
Course Description:
This course introduces the study of the properties, effects, and therapeutic value of the primary
agents in the major drug categories. Topics include autonomic pharmacology, drugs acting on the
cardiovascular-renal system, central nervous system pharmacology, drugs with important actions
on the smooth muscle, drugs used to treat diseases of the blood, inflammation and gout, endocrine
system pharmacology and chemotherapeutics. Upon completion, students should be able to place
major drugs into correct therapeutic categories and identify indications, side effects, and trade and
generic names.
Course Credit(s): 4 Units – Lecture (3 Units); Laboratory (1 Unit)
Contact Hours: Friday, 3 pm – 6 pm
Pre-Requisite(s): Organic Medicinal and Pharmaceutical Chemistry (Lecture and Laboratory)
Co-Requisite(s): Pharmacology and Therapeutics II – Laboratory
Course Outcomes: Upon completion of this course, the student will demonstrate knowledge of each
of the following:
 Major types of drug receptors and the molecular mechanisms of drug action.
 Autonomic pharmacology.
 Basic and clinical pharmacology of the cardiovascular and renal agents.
 Central nervous system pharmacology.
 Molecular mechanisms of action and clinical use of smooth muscle acting agents.
