Hot Vendors in Social Collaboration and Work, 2016
Summary: Social Collaboration and Work Platforms are one of
the primary ways that people share information. Our 2016 Hot
Vendors in Social Collaboration and Work make it easy for internal
and external teams to share information and get their work done.
Introduction
There are many ways to share, manage, and collaborate around
content, and the need to easily share information between people
and on mobile devices is now an imperative. In the digital
experience, ease of use trumps everything. This Research Note
profiles one of the Hot Vendors who is helping enterprises get
work done by integrating multiple workplace tools into one
offering.
The Changing Workplace
One of the largest changes to the workplace in the last several
years has been mobility: workers are no longer tied to a fixed
workplace, schedule, or inventory of devices. They work at home,
in airports, at hotels, or in the air, often on their own tablets and
smartphones; they oversee their own system management and
provisioning. Remote workers want easy-to-use tools and will
sign up for new services that they feel will help them get work
done.
Workplace Application Tool Overload
One of the big challenges in the workplace today is the explosion
of tools in the workplace. Business users are helping to fuel this
because they are quick to pull out their credit card and signup for
new applications that appear to fit their needs.
The explosion of tools is being fueled by new Mobile
Collaboration tools, such as Slack, that are making it easier for
teams to collaborate on the go.

how will they evolve?

Task Management and Managing Work
The growth of tools such as Wrike and Asana is partly due to the
need to manage work in a more seamless manner. The problem,
however, is that often the tools are isolated from the tools that
people use to do the work. This means that users are constantly
forced to use multiple tools, which impacts productivity and
creates frustration with users.
The Rise of Work Platforms
Work Platforms are going beyond the original concept of Social to
focus on what users need to get their work done. Although Cloud
Office Suites such as Microsoft Office 365 and Google for Work
use email as the anchor application, today, messaging is the
fastest growing collaboration and communication category. Tools
such as Bolste represent a new way to do work and manage it at
the same time.
Social Collaboration
Collaboration has always been about people, but increasingly, it’s
about helping people get more work done. The current
convergence of collaboration technologies around cloud and
mobile is driving the emerging Mobile Collaboration space. Mobile
Collaboration apps combine multiple collaboration modes such
as real-time, social, and text in a single UI, presenting a
collaborative continuum that focuses on human interaction.
Besides Mobile Collaboration as the new tip of the spear in
Collaboration, the increased use of video due to technologies
such as WebRTC is creating new use cases that are helping
enterprises collaborate with their customers - and in industries
such as healthcare, to collaborate with their patients.
Finding and Sharing Knowledge in a Social Manner
The need to find knowledge is a core need in the workplace. One
thing for enterprises to consider is where their repository of
knowledge is located in the enterprise.
Knowledge is stuck in many places in the enterprise, including
email systems, content management repositories, and in vertical
applications (ERP, HCM, and CRM). This is one of the reasons
that Aragon believes Work Platforms that combine all of the best
attributes of a Social Network, along with Content Management,
are emerging.

People are also keepers of knowledge (i.e. Tacit Knowledge).
When they participate in an ESN or a Community, they share their
knowledge that is then part of that system.
When evaluating where your knowledge is stored in the
enterprise, consider Social Networks and new Work Platforms as
the hub – where people find and access knowledge. Connecting
various systems is key and as Predictive Analytics comes online
(and becomes how search is used), knowledge will be able to be
located and leveraged faster.

knowledge.
The Need for Speed
Winning in business in 2016 means that outcomes matter. As a
result, the challenge today is to share information faster and work
more efficiently in a real-time environment. New platforms are
making it easier for workers and enterprises to collaborate, share
content, and get work done. An intuitive user interface that
employs design techniques such as progressive disclosure is one
of the key things that is driving this trend toward a new generation
of content and collaboration providers.

created Communities.
Carii, based in Media, PA, offers a collaborative work platform that
makes it easy for associates to interact with their ecosystem of
partners, suppliers, and customers (see Note 1). Carii supports
the extended enterprise, which lets users in a select ecosystem
better connect with each other in a more organic fashion. The
ability to self-sustain a community via selected advertising and
fundraising is also unique and is something others may decide to
emulate.
What makes Carii hot is its ability to enable people to connect

two collaboration platforms (see Figure 2). The Carii Collaborative
work platform also allows for chat-based collaboration, content

Aragon Advisory
• Enterprises need to re-evaluate how they do work and the
tools they use to collaborate internally and externally.
• Look for ease of use and the ability to leverage Mobile
Collaboration to increase productivity.
• Do pilot tests and ensure that “millennial” workers get to test
drive new tools.
Bottom Line
The need to share and collaborate around content in the context
of a business process is greater than ever before. The
overwhelming explosion of tools in the enterprise means taking a
step back and looking at the growth of Collaborative Work
Platforms that can help people focus on outcomes and eliminate
the need to switch between work tools several times per day.
