TAKING A STAND FOR CHRIST-2013 @ KIPKABUS HIGH SCHOOL
Introduction
DEFINITION :Make up one's mind….OR make a determination; COMMIT ONESELF, REMAIN FIRM, FIX
UPON…………..FOR CHRIST
 LIFE'S MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION WHICH WE ALL HAVE TO FACE IS PROBABLY THIS
ONE, "IF YOU WERE TO DIE, AND STAND BEFORE GOD, AND HE SHOULD ASK, 'WHY
SHOULD I LET YOU IN HEAVEN?' WHAT WOULD YOU SAY?
During the Korean War Christian preachers were targeted by the Communists. In such a tense
situation a group of 40 Communists kidnapped a preacher, his wife and two children. They took
them to the outskirts of the city…..
AND PAUL YONGI CHO
It took many years to understand why God had permitted that incident.
God used the death of those four people save 40 more.
 WHY IS IT SO DIFFICULT TO TAKE A STAND FOR JESUS CHRIST AT SCHOOL?"

Many of our youth genuinely don’t understand the gospel, the whole counsel of God, and we often just
presume that they do. And many churches and homes have not taught our teens that an essential,
fundamental part of being a disciple is sharing the gospel, and then equipped them for that
adventurous task.
Students NEED TO realize that witnessing and talking about Jesus is not an extra-curricular activity, but
rather a life-style because of who we are in Jesus Christ.
Speaking Up for Christ is Offering a Choice….. FOR LIVE OR DEATH…. NO INTERMEDIATE.(Eph 2:13)
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE BURDENED ABOUT THE SPIRITUAL CONDITION OF A FRIEND?
MOST OF US HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED A BURDEN FOR ANOTHER. SURELY WE WOULD SAY WE
WANT TO SEE OUR FRIENDS AND CLASSMATES IN HEAVEN. BUT IS IT JUST TALK? DO YOU CARE
ENOUGH TO SPEAK UP? DO YOU CARE ENOUGH TO DISCUSS JESUS CHRIST? TO TAKE A STAND
FOR CHRIST AT SCHOOL, YOU MUST START WITH YOUR HEART'S ATTITUDE.

ROMANS 9:1-3. Here is Paul's heart attitude. Note key words: anguish, sorrow, cursed, cut off. Paul
was so burdened that he would've traded his salvation just to see his friends know Christ and be
saved. Right now, we want God to give us the same kind of burden. We become burdened by:
1. Realizing we have the best news
19:11-16- THE GLORY OF CHRIST

to share. (COL 1:15-23- THE SUPRIMACY OF CHRIST) ; REV

2. Learning what our position in Christ means. PHILIP 4:13, ALSO NOTE THAT WE ARE
COMMANDED TO ENCOURAGE EACH OTHER AND NON-CHRISTIANS ARE TO KNOW US BY OUR
LOVE FOR ONE ANOTHER.
3. Seeing

our unsaved friends as they really are: spiritually dead and bound. We deceive
ourselves to think an unsaved friend is OK. He/she is not OK; he/she is perishing, rotting
spiritually from the inside out.
4. What is the main aim of our “good” relationship with NON-believers…. Soul
winning..PAUL TEACHES..1C0R 9:19-27
NOTE THAT Christian life IS a relationship rather than a list of do's and don'ts. Being in Christ by

FAITH brings tremendous positive changes in a person's life..
POINT OUT THAT WE HAVE BEEN CO-CRUCIFIED, CO-BURIED, CO-RISEN AND ARE COREIGNING WITH JESUS CHRIST.
LUKE 23:47-56, JOHN 19:21-38, 1 COR. 15:3-4, APOSTLES’ CREED.

A story is told of a man who worked in a company that had the reputation of being very ungodly.
A friend, hearing that the man had employed, said to him, “If those people ever find out you’re a
Christian, you’re going to be in for a hard time!” The man responded, “I know, but I need the
job!”The next morning he left for camp. Sometime later, he came home for a visit. While in
home, he met his friend who asked, “Well, how did it go? Did they give you a hard time because
you’re a Christian?”
“Oh no, not at all,” the man replied. “They never even found out!”
While we may laugh at that story, many of us are hit. It hits too close to home! Living in a
world that is hostile to Christianity, it’s easy just to blend in, to laugh at the dirty jokes, never to
confront the gossip, and never to speak a word that would identify you as a Christian. Besides, it
might cost your reputation or even your job! Sometimes even among Christian friends it’s hard
to hold to your convictions for fear of what they will think.
That’s why you should be interested in the story of Joseph of Arimathea, the man who buried
Jesus. He was a member of the Jewish Sanhedrin, the body of 70 men who governed the
religious and many of the civic matters in Israel. It was the Sanhedrin that had condemned Jesus
to death, although Joseph had not consented to their plan and action. But probably he had not
spoken out as vigorously as he should have.
John 19:38 tells us that he was a secret disciple of Jesus, for fear of the Jews. His fear had
caused Joseph not to take a bold stand for Christ, even though in his heart he knew that he should
have done so.
But now, after Jesus was dead, when His followers had gone into hiding, Joseph gathered up his
courage (Mark 15:43), went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus so that he could give Him a
proper burial. If he had not done so, Jesus’ body probably would have been thrown on a garbage
heap and burned, robbing us of some of the major proofs of the resurrection, as we’ll see. So we
can thank Joseph for honoring Jesus with a proper burial and for giving us many evidences for
our faith. Unfortunately most people do this for their parents..hehehe
Joseph seemingly had nothing to gain and everything to lose by identifying himself with Jesus at
this point in time. JESUS WAS DEAD AND NO ONE WAS EXPECTING HIS
RESURRECTION. It would have been much easier for Joseph to have thought, “Oh, well! Jesus
was a good man and a prophet of God. It’s too bad that these things happen. But, life must go
on. I’ll have more influence if I don’t rock the boat and keep my seat on the Sanhedrin. I’d
better not do anything to upset anyone and jeopardize my position of influence.”
But in spite of the risks, Joseph came out of hiding and took a strong stand for Jesus by providing
Him a proper burial.
GREAT! HOW DO WE DO IT? MORE COULD BE SAID, BUT OUR TEXT REVEALS AT LEAST SEVEN
FACTORS THAT WILL HELP:
1. To take a stand for the Lord, go often to the foot of the cross.
I can’t say for certain what made Joseph come out of hiding. Perhaps it was the result of a long process. He had
heard Jesus’ teaching, especially that final week in the temple. He had heard reports of His miracles, especially
raising Lazarus from the dead. Knowing the Scriptures, he realized that Jesus uniquely fulfilled the many messianic
prophecies. He also could see the jealousy and selfishness of his fellow members of the council. Luke tells us that
Joseph was “a good and righteous man,” “who was waiting for the kingdom of God” (Lk 23:50, 51 ). As
Joseph’s convictions about Jesus grew, he also grew more uncomfortable with the views of his fellow members on
the Sanhedrin. Finally, he could no longer keep it in. REMEMBER JOHN- the Baptist SAYING THAT
HE<JESUS> INCREASE AS I DECREASES.JOHN 3:30
But I think that the deciding factor that pushed Joseph over the line was standing at the cross and watching Jesus die.
Luke hints at this: In 23:47, he states that when the centurion saw the events at the cross, especially Jesus’ final
cry, he broke forth in praise. In the next verse, he reports that when the multitudes observed what had happened,
they went home beating their breasts. He also reports that Jesus’ acquaintances and the women who followed
Him, “were standing at a distance, seeing these things” (23:48). Immediately Luke adds, “AND, BEHOLD” to
grab our attention. Not only were His followers observing these things, but of all people, a member of the Council
was seeing these things! SEEING THE SKY DARKEN, WATCHING JESUS ON THE CROSS, HEARING
HIS FINAL WORDS, HEARING THE CENTURION’S PRAISE, WATCHING THE MULTITUDE
DEPART IN MOURNING—all of this mounted up until Joseph said, “That’s enough! I can’t hide my convictions
any longer. I don’t care what it costs me, I’m going to Pilate so that I can give this Man the decent burial He
deserves!”
The cross is the center of the Christian faith. While we cannot stand and take in the events first hand, as Joseph
and the others did that day, we should come often to the foot of the cross and think about its implications LETS
TAKE AT LOOK AT PAUL IN Gal. 2:20; 6:14). If you go there often, you will not be the same. It will
strengthen you to take a stand for Christ.
Note these particulars about going to the cross:
A. Going to the cross will remind us that Jesus died.

If Jesus did not actually die, then He did not die for our sins. If He did not die, then He was not bodily
resurrected, in which case, “your faith is worthless; you are still in your sins” (1 Cor.15:14)
Jesus didn’t just go into a semi-comatose state, to be revived later, The gospels all make it clear that Jesus
died physically. The soldiers regarded Jesus as dead so that they did not break His legs to hasten death, as
they did with the other two men on the cross. NOTE ALSO THAT HE WAS NOT KILLED. One of
the soldiers thrust his spear into Jesus’ side, so that blood and water gushed out (John 19:30-34). If He
hadn’t been dead before, that would have killed Him. THE SCRIPTURE ALSO RECORDS THAT Pilate
ascertained from the Roman centurion (who certainly knew a live prisoner from a dead one) that Jesus
was dead before he released the body to Joseph
These seemingly incidental facts of Jesus’ death fulfilled specific Old Testament prophecies




The fact that the soldiers did not break His legs, fulfilled the Scripture that none of the Passover
lamb’s bones should be broken (Exod. 12:46 ;)
The soldier’s piercing Jesus’ side fulfilled Zechariah 12:10, that Israel “will look on Me whom
they have pierced.”
Burial by Joseph in a rich Man’s tomb…Isaiah 53:9… They intended to bury him with
criminals, but he ended up in a rich man’s tomb, because he had committed no
violent deeds, nor had he spoken deceitfully.

B. Going to the cross will remind us that Jesus died for our sins.



Jesus did not just die a common death. He offered Himself as the Lamb of God, the
substitutionary sacrifice for our sins.




The darkness at noon pictured the judgment that God poured out on Jesus.
His cry, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” reveals His agony as He was made sin on our
behalf.
The torn veil in the temple shows that through His death, Jesus opened the way into the holy of holies.
The cross satisfied God’s holy wrath against our sin, so that He is free to be both “just and the justifier of
the one who has faith in Jesus” OUR FATHERS SOVEREIGNITY. (Rom. 3:26).



As we think often of what Christ did for us there, it will strengthen us to take a bold stand for Him who endured all
of that out of love for us.
C. Going to the cross will remind us that Jesus was buried.- Jesus’ burial is further evidence of His death.
As mentioned, the fact of His burial in the tomb, as opposed to being tossed on the dump in the valley provides us
with several proofs of His resurrection. We have the empty tomb. The disciples saw the grave clothes lying in the
tomb. The heavy stone rolled against the entrance, sealed with the Roman seal and guarded by the Roman guard;
give us evidence that the tomb was secure from grave robbers.
Also, Jesus’ burial is further proof of His real humanity. If Jesus was not a real man who died for our sins and was
bodily raised, then we have no salvation.
Also, the fact that Joseph buried Jesus in his own tomb, where no one had ever lain, is significant
D. Going to the cross will remind us that Jesus was raised



As you may know, the resurrection is the foundation of the entire Christian faith (1 Cor 15:17).
It is God’s proof to all men that He will someday judge the world in righteousness through Jesus (Acts
17:31).


READ (Colossians 3:1-3). Setting our minds on things above

NB: If you struggle with taking a bold stand for Christ, go often to the foot of the cross and remember that Christ
not only died for your sins, but also that He was raised from the dead and that He is coming again soon to judge the
living and the dead-APOSTLES CREED
2. To take a stand for the Lord, be prepared to pay the price.
What happened to Joseph of Arimathea after the day that he buried Jesus? NOT TOLD BUT it is not being
speculative to say that he paid a heavy price. We may face the same costs…”But even if you should suffer for
what is right, you are blessed."Do not fear what they fear; do not be frightened.”
ALWAYS REMEMBER TO BENEFIT GOD n NOT U. “In the first chapter of his letter Peter writes of how
suffering serves to purify and perfect the genuineness of our faith – just as the fiery furnace works to refine
gold – attacking and destroying the impurities so that what survives is the 100% pure stuff”
A. We may have to sacrifice our reputation for Christ.
When the Sanhedrin heard that one of their own had buried this despised Galilean, they would have been shocked.
His stand for Christ MAY HAVE cut him off from all of his former associates. Often it is not only your reputation
in the world, but also your reputation in the religious world that takes a beating when you take a bold stand for
Christ ESP WHEN WE DON’T COMPROMISE eg C U LEADERS.
Jesus said, "If you want to be my disciple, then take up your cross and follow me".







Change your music and friends, and start talking about Christ at school (1JOHN 2:15-17)
Sometimes, IF U ARE WITH THE PEER it is better, if you cannot have good input, to kindly
dismiss yourself from that conversation
When you make such a big point of being a Christian, be extra careful to live like a believer
(LUKE 10:27). Always be ready to take a stand for Christ! And remember, a simple lifestyle of
love and forgiveness can start conversations and open doors that lead many to Him!
There is a well-known statistic that tells us that 80% of youth stop attending church after they
graduate high school. The cry of all of our hearts should be “why”?



I have heard many theories of why they leave: new temptations in college, no mom and dad
FIGURE to be a governor for their sinful nature, exposure to new faiths and PHILOSOPHY,
not being properly discipled at home, going to youth group, not going to youth group, etc. While
these are real issues, I don’t believe any of them are the reason they quit church.



They didn’t read the Bible regularly, they didn’t share their faith, many were sexually active,
many experimented with drugs, they didn’t fight for godly fellowship, they were not givers, dated
unbelievers, and the list of goat-like qualities goes on. THEY SIMPLY HADN’T BEEN
TRANSLATED FROM DARKNESS TO LIGHT. They didn’t drift away from God after high
school; THEY WEREN’T WITH GOD DURING HIGH SCHOOL. They drifted away from
“church.”
But the crucial matter is not what people think or say about you.The crucial matter is what does God think?
REMEMBER WOT GOD TOLD PROPHET SAMWEL IN JESSES HOME. Then you can let Him take care of
your reputation. Don't fear being labeled "religious," "preacher," "walking Bible." Part of standing for Christ
consistently means building a reputation in what you talk about.

B. We may have to sacrifice our religion for Christ.

In order to bury Jesus, Joseph had to defile himself ceremonially by touching a dead body, right on the
eve of the Jewish Passover. Christ now was their true Passover lamb who had been slain. They let go of
their rituals and laid hold of Jesus Christ. To be a committed follower of Jesus, you have to let go of your
religion. By religion, I mean any attempt to be righteous before God or others by keeping certain rules or
by outward behavior…But genuine Christianity is a matter of the heart. True Christians have been to the
cross, where they not only trust in Christ as their righteousness; they are crucified with Him. They daily put to
death the deeds of the flesh. They judge sins of thought, as well as word and deed. They live in daily repentance,
humbling themselves before God and others, so that the life of Christ may shine through them.
C. We may have to sacrifice our riches for Christ.

Joseph gave up his personal tomb, an expensive thing to do. Remember, he was not expecting it to be
vacated in three days! But he was willing to give generously because he believed in Jesus as his Lord and
Messiah. Jesus said, “No one of you can be My disciple who does not give up all his own
possessions” (LK 14:33). You say, “He doesn’t mean that literally, does He ?
If you give your money to God’s kingdom, your heart will follow (Matt. 6:21). PIA MABOY HUINVEST
KWA THE LADIES THEY REALY LUV… AU SIO,,,, HEHEHE
3. To take a stand for Christ, “show up” and do what you can do.
CONSIDER the women who followed Jesus out of Galilee and now follow to see where and how His body was laid.
They went back to prepare more spices and perfumes, intending to return after the Sabbath and further anoint His
body. Their actions sprang more from love than from faith, since they didn’t yet understand or believe that He would
be raised from the dead. But at least they showed up. They had the privilege of being the first wittnesses of the risen
Savior. THE DISCIPLES COULDN’T SHOW UP COZ OF FEAR of the Jews (John 20:19),
In the hours of crisis, it is often the Peters who have sworn loyalty to Jesus with big gesture and fullness of selfconfidence, that disappoint, and it is the secret and quiet followers of the Master (like Joseph, Nicodemus and the
women) that do not hesitate to serve Him in love—at whatevercost (Commentary on the Gospel of Luke)
Maybe you can’t be an articulate verbal witness for Christ in front of a group. But you can still take a stand by
your behavior, your attitude, and your quiet resolve not to compromise Show your commitment and love for
the Savior, and He will use you as He used Joseph and these faithful women.
4. Honor Christ as Lord.

Joseph had to bury Jesus as a way of honour.
1Peter 3:15 “But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to
everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and
respect,”
Even if the world should attack us as we go about doing what is good and right – we should not be
surprised or stunned or shocked –Their actions against us should all the more lead us to honor and
worship and set apart Christ as Lord in our lives.
IN KENYA WHEN RAISING THE FLAG AND WHEN DELIVERING THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE, ALL
MUST BE STANDING AT ATTENTION, FACING THE FLAG .
In the same way we should stand at attention before Christ our Master, which means that you we are watching
and waiting to hear from Him and ready to respond to His command. We are not allowing ourselves to be
physically, mentally or emotionally distracted by other matters or even by the attacks and accusations of others. Let
the devil do what he will - but we will not take our eyes off our Master. Give Him our full and complete attention
and allegiance and He will honor and bless that trust with His strength and grace.
5. Allow others see what you are doing. ….THE PROFFESOR IN THE PHILOSOPHY CLASS
Joseph took the Body of Jesus while others watched and The pilate had the consent of this.
Vs. 15 “But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks
you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,”








To say that it's difficult to bring Christ into a conversation brings up the fact that we treat sharing
Christ as an extra-curricular activity. Many times we make sharing Christ harder than it really
is by thinking that the subject of Christ and Christianity is not related to our lives
Is it really necessary for me to speak about Christ around school and in front of my friends?
ISN'T IT ENOUGH TO JUST "LIVE THE LIFE" IN FRONT OF THEM? PAUL, FOR
INSTANCE WOULD BEG PPLE TO BE RECONCILED TO GOD 2 Cor 5:19-20-Our role is
to be ambassadors.
SPEAK OUT DAILY. BE CONSCIOUS of talking about the Lord (or the fact that you don't talk
about the Lord). Set personal goals to be more verbal
Remember that bringing up Christ involves your personality and opinions. Most of the time for
you not to talk about Christ is unnatural to your friends because they really expect to hear you
talk about the Lord.

6. Strength in Numbers
Sit with a mix of Christian and non-Christian friends. Don't segregate yourselves. You need the help of a Couple
other Christian who want to help steer the conversation to spiritual topics…REMEMBER THE WOMEN, n of
course JOSEPH was not alone
7. The basics; PRAYERS, WORD n FELLOWSHIPS
One thing which is most important in our church's ministry of helping people is to help them find Answers to life's
questions right from the Bible.

Romans 6:14: WE AV DOMINION OVER SIN

WHEN NO ONE ELSE IS FOR CHRIST…. THE YOUNG GIRL IN ASIA
Taking a stand for Jesus Christ has most traditionally been demonstrated by Biblical characters as being SOLO
WORK. Following Jesus Christ and asking others to follow Him has never been the most popular way to go.
Even our Lord prayed for His disciples because He understood that the world would reject them as it had rejected
Him.
Dispel a mentality of only thinking that you are successful in serving God when you have a great following
and are having great blessings.
LETS LOOK AT THIS GREAT PEOPLE, HEB 11; the people listed there who pretty much soloed for the Lord.
LOOK AT PAUL, PETER, ELIJAH n NOAH who were alone many times in their struggles
BUT GOD, THE FATHER, THE SON n SPIRIT IS WITH U ALWAYS (Luke 21:12-19)
 No matter how deserted I feel, He promises to never leave me
 I can stand firm, even when others hate me, because I know He will protect me

CONCLUSION

If there is a point where you know you are compromising your stand for Christ, where you are blending in
with the world but you know that you need to take a stand, learn from Joseph. Go to the foot of the cross
and think about the Savior’s death on your behalf. Be prepared to count the cost. And, the next
opportunity you get, show up and do whatever you can to let others know that you are on Jesus’ side.

YOU need YOUR own relationship with the Lord
YOU HAVE have to develop YOUR own desire for Christ
LIKE DANIEL WHO wasn’t afraid to stand up for what he believed. He changed the course of a
nation. He helped to bring a king to God and he trusted in God. Dare to Be a Daniel will help
YOU share YOUR faith, because Daniel is an example to me, and I’m trying to follow his
example DANIEL 3:16-19
Faith in Christ is the only way to heaven. (John 14:6; 1 Tim. 2:5-6)
It is significant that we as Christians remind the non-Christians that God is alive. We have a right
to confront non-Christians because their activity will lead them to total and utter destruction
physically and spiritually. Our right comes in that God is truth. He is in control. He loves them
and wants them to know Jesus. GOD LUV PPLE MORE THAN ANYTHING, n HE WANTS
THEM TO KNOW.
Rom 10:9 because if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord
and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will
be saved.

Taking a stand for Christ-2013@KIPKABUS HIGH SCHOOL

  • 1. TAKING A STAND FOR CHRIST-2013 @ KIPKABUS HIGH SCHOOL Introduction DEFINITION :Make up one's mind….OR make a determination; COMMIT ONESELF, REMAIN FIRM, FIX UPON…………..FOR CHRIST  LIFE'S MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION WHICH WE ALL HAVE TO FACE IS PROBABLY THIS ONE, "IF YOU WERE TO DIE, AND STAND BEFORE GOD, AND HE SHOULD ASK, 'WHY SHOULD I LET YOU IN HEAVEN?' WHAT WOULD YOU SAY? During the Korean War Christian preachers were targeted by the Communists. In such a tense situation a group of 40 Communists kidnapped a preacher, his wife and two children. They took them to the outskirts of the city….. AND PAUL YONGI CHO It took many years to understand why God had permitted that incident. God used the death of those four people save 40 more.  WHY IS IT SO DIFFICULT TO TAKE A STAND FOR JESUS CHRIST AT SCHOOL?" Many of our youth genuinely don’t understand the gospel, the whole counsel of God, and we often just presume that they do. And many churches and homes have not taught our teens that an essential, fundamental part of being a disciple is sharing the gospel, and then equipped them for that adventurous task. Students NEED TO realize that witnessing and talking about Jesus is not an extra-curricular activity, but rather a life-style because of who we are in Jesus Christ. Speaking Up for Christ is Offering a Choice….. FOR LIVE OR DEATH…. NO INTERMEDIATE.(Eph 2:13) WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE BURDENED ABOUT THE SPIRITUAL CONDITION OF A FRIEND? MOST OF US HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED A BURDEN FOR ANOTHER. SURELY WE WOULD SAY WE WANT TO SEE OUR FRIENDS AND CLASSMATES IN HEAVEN. BUT IS IT JUST TALK? DO YOU CARE ENOUGH TO SPEAK UP? DO YOU CARE ENOUGH TO DISCUSS JESUS CHRIST? TO TAKE A STAND FOR CHRIST AT SCHOOL, YOU MUST START WITH YOUR HEART'S ATTITUDE. ROMANS 9:1-3. Here is Paul's heart attitude. Note key words: anguish, sorrow, cursed, cut off. Paul was so burdened that he would've traded his salvation just to see his friends know Christ and be saved. Right now, we want God to give us the same kind of burden. We become burdened by: 1. Realizing we have the best news 19:11-16- THE GLORY OF CHRIST to share. (COL 1:15-23- THE SUPRIMACY OF CHRIST) ; REV 2. Learning what our position in Christ means. PHILIP 4:13, ALSO NOTE THAT WE ARE COMMANDED TO ENCOURAGE EACH OTHER AND NON-CHRISTIANS ARE TO KNOW US BY OUR LOVE FOR ONE ANOTHER.
  • 2. 3. Seeing our unsaved friends as they really are: spiritually dead and bound. We deceive ourselves to think an unsaved friend is OK. He/she is not OK; he/she is perishing, rotting spiritually from the inside out. 4. What is the main aim of our “good” relationship with NON-believers…. Soul winning..PAUL TEACHES..1C0R 9:19-27 NOTE THAT Christian life IS a relationship rather than a list of do's and don'ts. Being in Christ by FAITH brings tremendous positive changes in a person's life.. A friend, hearing that the man had employed, said to him, “If those people ever find out you’re a Christian, you’re going to be in for a hard time!” The man responded, “I know, but I need the job!”The next morning he left for camp. Sometime later, he came home for a visit. While in home, he met his friend who asked, “Well, how did it go? Did they give you a hard time because you’re a Christian?” “Oh no, not at all,” the man replied. “They never even found out!” While we may laugh at that story, many of us are hit. It hits too close to home! Living in a world that is hostile to Christianity, it’s easy just to blend in, to laugh at the dirty jokes, never to confront the gossip, and never to speak a word that would identify you as a Christian. Besides, it might cost your reputation or even your job! Sometimes even among Christian friends it’s hard to hold to your convictions for fear of what they will think. That’s why you should be interested in the story of Joseph of Arimathea, the man who buried Jesus. He was a member of the Jewish Sanhedrin, the body of 70 men who governed the religious and many of the civic matters in Israel. It was the Sanhedrin that had condemned Jesus to death, although Joseph had not consented to their plan and action. But probably he had not spoken out as vigorously as he should have. John 19:38 tells us that he was a secret disciple of Jesus, for fear of the Jews. His fear had caused Joseph not to take a bold stand for Christ, even though in his heart he knew that he should have done so. But now, after Jesus was dead, when His followers had gone into hiding, Joseph gathered up his courage (Mark 15:43), went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus so that he could give Him a proper burial. If he had not done so, Jesus’ body probably would have been thrown on a garbage heap and burned, robbing us of some of the major proofs of the resurrection, as we’ll see. So we can thank Joseph for honoring Jesus with a proper burial and for giving us many evidences for our faith. Unfortunately most people do this for their parents..hehehe
  • 3. Joseph seemingly had nothing to gain and everything to lose by identifying himself with Jesus at this point in time. JESUS WAS DEAD AND NO ONE WAS EXPECTING HIS RESURRECTION. It would have been much easier for Joseph to have thought, “Oh, well! Jesus was a good man and a prophet of God. It’s too bad that these things happen. But, life must go on. I’ll have more influence if I don’t rock the boat and keep my seat on the Sanhedrin. I’d better not do anything to upset anyone and jeopardize my position of influence.” But in spite of the risks, Joseph came out of hiding and took a strong stand for Jesus by providing Him a proper burial. GREAT! HOW DO WE DO IT? MORE COULD BE SAID, BUT OUR TEXT REVEALS AT LEAST SEVEN FACTORS THAT WILL HELP: 1. To take a stand for the Lord, go often to the foot of the cross. I can’t say for certain what made Joseph come out of hiding. Perhaps it was the result of a long process. He had heard Jesus’ teaching, especially that final week in the temple. He had heard reports of His miracles, especially raising Lazarus from the dead. Knowing the Scriptures, he realized that Jesus uniquely fulfilled the many messianic prophecies. He also could see the jealousy and selfishness of his fellow members of the council. Luke tells us that Joseph was “a good and righteous man,” “who was waiting for the kingdom of God” (Lk 23:50, 51 ). As Joseph’s convictions about Jesus grew, he also grew more uncomfortable with the views of his fellow members on the Sanhedrin. Finally, he could no longer keep it in. REMEMBER JOHN- the Baptist SAYING THAT HE<JESUS> INCREASE AS I DECREASES.JOHN 3:30 But I think that the deciding factor that pushed Joseph over the line was standing at the cross and watching Jesus die. Luke hints at this: In 23:47, he states that when the centurion saw the events at the cross, especially Jesus’ final cry, he broke forth in praise. In the next verse, he reports that when the multitudes observed what had happened, they went home beating their breasts. He also reports that Jesus’ acquaintances and the women who followed Him, “were standing at a distance, seeing these things” (23:48). Immediately Luke adds, “AND, BEHOLD” to grab our attention. Not only were His followers observing these things, but of all people, a member of the Council was seeing these things! SEEING THE SKY DARKEN, WATCHING JESUS ON THE CROSS, HEARING HIS FINAL WORDS, HEARING THE CENTURION’S PRAISE, WATCHING THE MULTITUDE DEPART IN MOURNING—all of this mounted up until Joseph said, “That’s enough! I can’t hide my convictions any longer. I don’t care what it costs me, I’m going to Pilate so that I can give this Man the decent burial He deserves!” The cross is the center of the Christian faith. While we cannot stand and take in the events first hand, as Joseph and the others did that day, we should come often to the foot of the cross and think about its implications LETS TAKE AT LOOK AT PAUL IN Gal. 2:20; 6:14). If you go there often, you will not be the same. It will strengthen you to take a stand for Christ. Note these particulars about going to the cross: A. Going to the cross will remind us that Jesus died. If Jesus did not actually die, then He did not die for our sins. If He did not die, then He was not bodily resurrected, in which case, “your faith is worthless; you are still in your sins” (1 Cor.15:14)
  • 4. Jesus didn’t just go into a semi-comatose state, to be revived later, The gospels all make it clear that Jesus died physically. The soldiers regarded Jesus as dead so that they did not break His legs to hasten death, as they did with the other two men on the cross. NOTE ALSO THAT HE WAS NOT KILLED. One of the soldiers thrust his spear into Jesus’ side, so that blood and water gushed out (John 19:30-34). If He hadn’t been dead before, that would have killed Him. THE SCRIPTURE ALSO RECORDS THAT Pilate ascertained from the Roman centurion (who certainly knew a live prisoner from a dead one) that Jesus was dead before he released the body to Joseph These seemingly incidental facts of Jesus’ death fulfilled specific Old Testament prophecies    The fact that the soldiers did not break His legs, fulfilled the Scripture that none of the Passover lamb’s bones should be broken (Exod. 12:46 ;) The soldier’s piercing Jesus’ side fulfilled Zechariah 12:10, that Israel “will look on Me whom they have pierced.” Burial by Joseph in a rich Man’s tomb…Isaiah 53:9… They intended to bury him with criminals, but he ended up in a rich man’s tomb, because he had committed no violent deeds, nor had he spoken deceitfully. B. Going to the cross will remind us that Jesus died for our sins.  Jesus did not just die a common death. He offered Himself as the Lamb of God, the substitutionary sacrifice for our sins.   The darkness at noon pictured the judgment that God poured out on Jesus. His cry, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” reveals His agony as He was made sin on our behalf. The torn veil in the temple shows that through His death, Jesus opened the way into the holy of holies. The cross satisfied God’s holy wrath against our sin, so that He is free to be both “just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus” OUR FATHERS SOVEREIGNITY. (Rom. 3:26).  As we think often of what Christ did for us there, it will strengthen us to take a bold stand for Him who endured all of that out of love for us. C. Going to the cross will remind us that Jesus was buried.- Jesus’ burial is further evidence of His death. As mentioned, the fact of His burial in the tomb, as opposed to being tossed on the dump in the valley provides us with several proofs of His resurrection. We have the empty tomb. The disciples saw the grave clothes lying in the tomb. The heavy stone rolled against the entrance, sealed with the Roman seal and guarded by the Roman guard; give us evidence that the tomb was secure from grave robbers. Also, Jesus’ burial is further proof of His real humanity. If Jesus was not a real man who died for our sins and was bodily raised, then we have no salvation. Also, the fact that Joseph buried Jesus in his own tomb, where no one had ever lain, is significant D. Going to the cross will remind us that Jesus was raised   As you may know, the resurrection is the foundation of the entire Christian faith (1 Cor 15:17). It is God’s proof to all men that He will someday judge the world in righteousness through Jesus (Acts 17:31).
  • 5.  READ (Colossians 3:1-3). Setting our minds on things above NB: If you struggle with taking a bold stand for Christ, go often to the foot of the cross and remember that Christ not only died for your sins, but also that He was raised from the dead and that He is coming again soon to judge the living and the dead-APOSTLES CREED 2. To take a stand for the Lord, be prepared to pay the price. What happened to Joseph of Arimathea after the day that he buried Jesus? NOT TOLD BUT it is not being speculative to say that he paid a heavy price. We may face the same costs…”But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed."Do not fear what they fear; do not be frightened.” ALWAYS REMEMBER TO BENEFIT GOD n NOT U. “In the first chapter of his letter Peter writes of how suffering serves to purify and perfect the genuineness of our faith – just as the fiery furnace works to refine gold – attacking and destroying the impurities so that what survives is the 100% pure stuff” A. We may have to sacrifice our reputation for Christ. When the Sanhedrin heard that one of their own had buried this despised Galilean, they would have been shocked. His stand for Christ MAY HAVE cut him off from all of his former associates. Often it is not only your reputation in the world, but also your reputation in the religious world that takes a beating when you take a bold stand for Christ ESP WHEN WE DON’T COMPROMISE eg C U LEADERS. Jesus said, "If you want to be my disciple, then take up your cross and follow me".    Change your music and friends, and start talking about Christ at school (1JOHN 2:15-17) Sometimes, IF U ARE WITH THE PEER it is better, if you cannot have good input, to kindly dismiss yourself from that conversation When you make such a big point of being a Christian, be extra careful to live like a believer (LUKE 10:27). Always be ready to take a stand for Christ! And remember, a simple lifestyle of love and forgiveness can start conversations and open doors that lead many to Him! There is a well-known statistic that tells us that 80% of youth stop attending church after they graduate high school. The cry of all of our hearts should be “why”?  I have heard many theories of why they leave: new temptations in college, no mom and dad FIGURE to be a governor for their sinful nature, exposure to new faiths and PHILOSOPHY, not being properly discipled at home, going to youth group, not going to youth group, etc. While these are real issues, I don’t believe any of them are the reason they quit church.  They didn’t read the Bible regularly, they didn’t share their faith, many were sexually active, many experimented with drugs, they didn’t fight for godly fellowship, they were not givers, dated unbelievers, and the list of goat-like qualities goes on. THEY SIMPLY HADN’T BEEN TRANSLATED FROM DARKNESS TO LIGHT. They didn’t drift away from God after high
  • 6. school; THEY WEREN’T WITH GOD DURING HIGH SCHOOL. They drifted away from “church.” But the crucial matter is not what people think or say about you.The crucial matter is what does God think? REMEMBER WOT GOD TOLD PROPHET SAMWEL IN JESSES HOME. Then you can let Him take care of your reputation. Don't fear being labeled "religious," "preacher," "walking Bible." Part of standing for Christ consistently means building a reputation in what you talk about. B. We may have to sacrifice our religion for Christ. In order to bury Jesus, Joseph had to defile himself ceremonially by touching a dead body, right on the eve of the Jewish Passover. Christ now was their true Passover lamb who had been slain. They let go of their rituals and laid hold of Jesus Christ. To be a committed follower of Jesus, you have to let go of your religion. By religion, I mean any attempt to be righteous before God or others by keeping certain rules or by outward behavior…But genuine Christianity is a matter of the heart. True Christians have been to the cross, where they not only trust in Christ as their righteousness; they are crucified with Him. They daily put to death the deeds of the flesh. They judge sins of thought, as well as word and deed. They live in daily repentance, humbling themselves before God and others, so that the life of Christ may shine through them. C. We may have to sacrifice our riches for Christ. Joseph gave up his personal tomb, an expensive thing to do. Remember, he was not expecting it to be vacated in three days! But he was willing to give generously because he believed in Jesus as his Lord and Messiah. Jesus said, “No one of you can be My disciple who does not give up all his own possessions” (LK 14:33). You say, “He doesn’t mean that literally, does He ? If you give your money to God’s kingdom, your heart will follow (Matt. 6:21). PIA MABOY HUINVEST KWA THE LADIES THEY REALY LUV… AU SIO,,,, HEHEHE 3. To take a stand for Christ, “show up” and do what you can do. CONSIDER the women who followed Jesus out of Galilee and now follow to see where and how His body was laid. They went back to prepare more spices and perfumes, intending to return after the Sabbath and further anoint His body. Their actions sprang more from love than from faith, since they didn’t yet understand or believe that He would be raised from the dead. But at least they showed up. They had the privilege of being the first wittnesses of the risen Savior. THE DISCIPLES COULDN’T SHOW UP COZ OF FEAR of the Jews (John 20:19), In the hours of crisis, it is often the Peters who have sworn loyalty to Jesus with big gesture and fullness of selfconfidence, that disappoint, and it is the secret and quiet followers of the Master (like Joseph, Nicodemus and the women) that do not hesitate to serve Him in love—at whatevercost (Commentary on the Gospel of Luke) Maybe you can’t be an articulate verbal witness for Christ in front of a group. But you can still take a stand by your behavior, your attitude, and your quiet resolve not to compromise Show your commitment and love for the Savior, and He will use you as He used Joseph and these faithful women. 4. Honor Christ as Lord. Joseph had to bury Jesus as a way of honour. 1Peter 3:15 “But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to
  • 7. everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,” Even if the world should attack us as we go about doing what is good and right – we should not be surprised or stunned or shocked –Their actions against us should all the more lead us to honor and worship and set apart Christ as Lord in our lives. IN KENYA WHEN RAISING THE FLAG AND WHEN DELIVERING THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE, ALL MUST BE STANDING AT ATTENTION, FACING THE FLAG . In the same way we should stand at attention before Christ our Master, which means that you we are watching and waiting to hear from Him and ready to respond to His command. We are not allowing ourselves to be physically, mentally or emotionally distracted by other matters or even by the attacks and accusations of others. Let the devil do what he will - but we will not take our eyes off our Master. Give Him our full and complete attention and allegiance and He will honor and bless that trust with His strength and grace. 5. Allow others see what you are doing. ….THE PROFFESOR IN THE PHILOSOPHY CLASS Joseph took the Body of Jesus while others watched and The pilate had the consent of this. Vs. 15 “But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,”     To say that it's difficult to bring Christ into a conversation brings up the fact that we treat sharing Christ as an extra-curricular activity. Many times we make sharing Christ harder than it really is by thinking that the subject of Christ and Christianity is not related to our lives Is it really necessary for me to speak about Christ around school and in front of my friends? ISN'T IT ENOUGH TO JUST "LIVE THE LIFE" IN FRONT OF THEM? PAUL, FOR INSTANCE WOULD BEG PPLE TO BE RECONCILED TO GOD 2 Cor 5:19-20-Our role is to be ambassadors. SPEAK OUT DAILY. BE CONSCIOUS of talking about the Lord (or the fact that you don't talk about the Lord). Set personal goals to be more verbal Remember that bringing up Christ involves your personality and opinions. Most of the time for you not to talk about Christ is unnatural to your friends because they really expect to hear you talk about the Lord. 6. Strength in Numbers Sit with a mix of Christian and non-Christian friends. Don't segregate yourselves. You need the help of a Couple other Christian who want to help steer the conversation to spiritual topics…REMEMBER THE WOMEN, n of course JOSEPH was not alone 7. The basics; PRAYERS, WORD n FELLOWSHIPS One thing which is most important in our church's ministry of helping people is to help them find Answers to life's questions right from the Bible.   Romans 6:14: WE AV DOMINION OVER SIN 1Corinthians 2:4,12,….Gods power thro’ people n Spirit.
  • 8.  Jeremiah 1:6-9…. God CAN ALSO USE YOU, LITTERALY WHEN NO ONE ELSE IS FOR CHRIST…. THE YOUNG GIRL IN ASIA Taking a stand for Jesus Christ has most traditionally been demonstrated by Biblical characters as being SOLO WORK. Following Jesus Christ and asking others to follow Him has never been the most popular way to go. Even our Lord prayed for His disciples because He understood that the world would reject them as it had rejected Him. Dispel a mentality of only thinking that you are successful in serving God when you have a great following and are having great blessings. LETS LOOK AT THIS GREAT PEOPLE, HEB 11; the people listed there who pretty much soloed for the Lord. LOOK AT PAUL, PETER, ELIJAH n NOAH who were alone many times in their struggles BUT GOD, THE FATHER, THE SON n SPIRIT IS WITH U ALWAYS (Luke 21:12-19)  No matter how deserted I feel, He promises to never leave me  I can stand firm, even when others hate me, because I know He will protect me CONCLUSION If there is a point where you know you are compromising your stand for Christ, where you are blending in with the world but you know that you need to take a stand, learn from Joseph. Go to the foot of the cross and think about the Savior’s death on your behalf. Be prepared to count the cost. And, the next opportunity you get, show up and do whatever you can to let others know that you are on Jesus’ side.       YOU need YOUR own relationship with the Lord YOU HAVE have to develop YOUR own desire for Christ LIKE DANIEL WHO wasn’t afraid to stand up for what he believed. He changed the course of a nation. He helped to bring a king to God and he trusted in God. Dare to Be a Daniel will help YOU share YOUR faith, because Daniel is an example to me, and I’m trying to follow his example DANIEL 3:16-19 Faith in Christ is the only way to heaven. (John 14:6; 1 Tim. 2:5-6) It is significant that we as Christians remind the non-Christians that God is alive. We have a right to confront non-Christians because their activity will lead them to total and utter destruction physically and spiritually. Our right comes in that God is truth. He is in control. He loves them and wants them to know Jesus. GOD LUV PPLE MORE THAN ANYTHING, n HE WANTS THEM TO KNOW. Rom 10:9 because if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. #######ALTAH CALL#######
