2. Imperialism Defined
Imperialism is when one state is superior, and
takes control over other lands that are not as
strong.
Colonialism is when a state politically controls
another state and make the most of their
economy.
Annexation is when a state or land is taken and
made part of another state.
3. Social Darwinism
Definition: The theory that people
or society that are stronger will
live on an weaker countries will be
taken over.
If someone were to take over
another country by mutual
diplomacy then they would have a
right in Imperialism. I believe
people could use darwinism as a
way to have leadership of the
country and have the leaders in
agreement.
4. "White Man's Burden"
Definition: It means that white men have the
responsibility to “take care of” other
countries that were primitive. This saying
originally came from a Poem called “The
White Man's Burden”.
5. Racism and the Missionary Impulse
Racism is the hatred or discrimination against another
person because of their race or belief.
Paternalism is the practice of people with higher
authority restricting the freedom of people subordinate
to them based on their supposed best interest. This
could be considered racist if it were a white man to a
black person or slave.
Missionaries actions could be categorized as
paternalistic because it was a way of saying that it was
in a persons best interest to believe and join God.
6. The Scramble for Africa
It occurred in the 1800s to 1914 when European colonial
rivalries invaded and occupied Africa.
Liberia and Ethiopia were the only two countries that were not
colonized during this time.
The Berlin Conference defused the disputes and set guidelines
to colonization and trade in Africa for the Europeans.
7. Nationalism
Nationalism is the pride in one’s country
from their countries strength, size,
industrial production and the person’s
willingness to die for it.
8. Colonized vs. the Colonizers
An industrialized nation would have
more advanced machinery, weapons, and
government that would make it easier to
take over a less “civilized” country.
I would assume the people would be
infuriated and try to rebel against the
enemy.
