Family psychotherapy was provided to clients as needed. An Existential-Humanistic-Spiritual
psychotherapeutic foundation was utilized with all clients in a manner appropriate each client’s
developmental level. For child and adolescent clients and families, play therapy, creative
expression, and psychodrama/drama therapy techniques were utilized. For the men in group
therapy spiritual principles and calls to a life of purpose were effectively used as motivation to
engage change. Psychodrama techniques were also employed in group therapy to bring
immediacy, aliveness, and playfulness to the therapeutic content.

One hundred forty-three aikidoist from 101 dojos across the U.S. participated in a battery of
four assessments taken online. All participants were currently training in aikido and working
full/part-time in an organization with daily interactions with peers, subordinates, or
supervisors. Participants were tested for somatic (body) insight, spirituality, and workplace
conflict style. Integrating is the most efficacious conflict style followed by compromising.
Avoiding is the least efficacious conflict style and dominating is next to last. Findings showed
that as somatic insight and spirituality increased so did use of integrating and compromising
style. The research findings showed clear implications for incorporating aikido in training
programs for professions including management, peace officers, health workers, and educators.

Schalge, C. (2009). Burning, healing, being. In M. Heery, Ed., Unearthing the moment XIII (pp.
53-63). Petaluma, CA: IIHS
This article is an autobiographical description of providing counseling and spiritual guidance at
the Burning Man Festival to festival-goers, a.k.a. burners, who were experiencing a variety of
difficulties. At the end of summer for one week per year the Black Rock desert of Nevada
Burning Man becomes home to fifty thousand people. Burning Man was founded on the idea of
transformation, as well as creative expression, personal responsibility, and interdependence. In
offering to be of service to distressed burners I realized that Burning Man is perhaps the most
efficacious context in existence for catalyzing a holistic growth and healing experience via
spiritual counseling. To illustrate this I share my experience of giving healing services to a fellow
burner while shaded under an open-air tent in the blazing heat. I explain the issues he
expressed, the seemingly disparate techniques I intuitively improvised, and the benefits we
both experienced as a result of our shared experience.

Summary:
Presently, I am searching for a psychological assistantship. Career-wise, as a licensed
psychologist I aspire to serve clients: 1) experiencing challenges with being over-stressed,
relationship conflict, dysfunctional communication, and emotional dysregulation, low self-
esteem, and difficulty in boundary setting; 2) with substance abuse/dependence disorders
occurring independently or co-occurring with trauma; 3) who would benefit from learning
conflict resolution skills through a combination of psycho-education and psycho-drama
techniques.
I have experience in providing individual and group psychotherapeutic services to clients with
trauma, severe mental disorders and co-occurring substance abuse/dependence disorders,
troubled male adolescents, and children.
I have been characterized by colleagues and clients as having a presence that is trustworthy,
grounded, steadfastly connected, gently forthright, insightful, accepting, calming, patient, self-
possessed, and heartfelt. I have cultivated this presence in order to create a container for a
client that is safe for exploration of fears, repressed emotions, growing edges, and
vulnerabilities as well as being conducive to practicing and leaning interpersonal &
intrapersonal skills. As I listen to the content of a client’s story, I track the underlying process.
What I hear is filtered through existential themes such as choice & purpose, freedom &
responsibility, meaning & meaninglessness, and angst & death. Additionally, I am aware of and
facilitate clients in bringing awareness to somatic feelings and body language for the purpose of
making the implicit process explicit. I work with a client in setting clear, attainable, and
measurable objectives. I actively work to form an alliance with a client based both on their
stated objectives and their implicit process. Last, I have a penchant for drawing on literature
and wisdom traditions to guide and advise and inspire a client as well as to clarify poignant
moments.

All participants were currently training in aikido and working full/part-time in an organization with daily interactions with peers, subordinates, or supervisors. Participants were tested for somatic (body) insight, spirituality, and workplace conflict style. Integrating is the most efficacious conflict style followed by compromising. Avoiding is the least efficacious conflict style and dominating is next to last. Findings showed that as somatic insight and spirituality increased so did use of integrating and compromising style. The research findings showed clear implications for incorporating aikido in training programs for professions including management, peace officers, health workers, and educators. Retrieved from http://search.proquest.com/docview/1689319422?accountid=25304 One hundred forty-three aikidoist from 101 dojos across the U.S. participated in a battery of four assessments taken online. Schalge, C. (2009). Burning, healing, being. In M. Heery, Ed., Unearthing the moment XIII (pp. 53-63). Petaluma, CA: IIHS This article is an autobiographical description of providing counseling and spiritual guidance at the Burning Man Festival to festival-goers, a.k.a. burners, who were experiencing a variety of difficulties. At the end of summer for one week per year the Black Rock desert of Nevada Burning Man becomes home to fifty thousand people. Burning Man was founded on the idea of transformation, as well as creative expression, personal responsibility, and interdependence. In offering to be of service to distressed burners I realized that Burning Man is perhaps the most efficacious context in existence for catalyzing a holistic growth and healing experience via spiritual counseling. To illustrate this I share my experience of giving healing services to a fellow burner while shaded under an open-air tent in the blazing heat. I explain the issues he expressed, the seemingly disparate techniques I intuitively improvised, and the benefits we both experienced as a result of our shared experience. Career-wise, as a licensed psychologist I aspire to serve clients: 1) experiencing challenges with being over-stressed, relationship conflict, dysfunctional communication, and emotional dysregulation, low self- esteem, and difficulty in boundary setting; 2) with substance abuse/dependence disorders occurring independently or co-occurring with trauma; 3) who would benefit from learning conflict resolution skills through a combination of psycho-education and psycho-drama techniques. I have experience in providing individual and group psychotherapeutic services to clients with trauma, severe mental disorders and co-occurring substance abuse/dependence disorders, troubled male adolescents, and children. I have been characterized by colleagues and clients as having a presence that is trustworthy, grounded, steadfastly connected, gently forthright, insightful, accepting, calming, patient, self- possessed, and heartfelt. I have cultivated this presence in order to create a container for a client that is safe for exploration of fears, repressed emotions, growing edges, and vulnerabilities as well as being conducive to practicing and leaning interpersonal & intrapersonal skills. As I listen to the content of a client’s story, I track the underlying process. What I hear is filtered through existential themes such as choice & purpose, freedom & responsibility, meaning & meaninglessness, and angst & death. Additionally, I am aware of and facilitate clients in bringing awareness to somatic feelings and body language for the purpose of making the implicit process explicit. I work with a client in setting clear, attainable, and measurable objectives. I actively work to form an alliance with a client based both on their stated objectives and their implicit process. Last, I have a penchant for drawing on literature and wisdom traditions to guide and advise and inspire a client as well as to clarify poignant moments.
