Local business tycoon David Cornwell uses September suspension as an opportunity to
improve his longtime, Athens nightlife pillar, Courtside Pizza.
Athens, January 25th, 2016 Despite a recent courtordered suspension, resulting from allegations regarding suspected violations
of the Ohio Liquor Control Commission, Athens favorite mom and pop bar, Courtside Pizza is stronger than ever. David Cornwell is
taking advantage of his time off by focus on improving the business with interior renovations. On February 6th Courtside Pizza we
reopen to the public, and loyal customers will be able to enjoy brand new bathrooms, points of entry and a rearranged kitchen.
It’s not an easy job being a bar owner in a small college town. It requires a lot of patients, and even more
responsibility. David Cornwell does everything in his power to to provide a fun, but safe, environment for his
customers, which begins by building a meticulous, detailoriented staff.
Cornwell requires extensive bar training and education in Liquor Control, so that all employees are provided with the
tools they need to enforce the law. Although Courtside does it’s best to enforce the law by forbidding the entrance of
any person under the age of 21, advances in technology have made it an increasingly difficult task.
Long gone are the days of teenagers using their siblings driver's license to sneak into bars. Today’s computers are
able to print almost exact copycats of state issued identifications that even police officers struggle to recognize, and
ship them across seas in less than a week. Although Courtside takes every possible measure to prevent the service
of alcohol to anyone under the age of 21, and avoid a fivefigure fine for themselves, it’s nearly impossible to
completely avoid breaches in the system.
This mistake cost Cornwell nearly $15,000, but instead of getting angry or upset, he is using this time off to make
some necessary changes to the interior design and layout of the bar. As of February 6th, Courtside Pizza will have
completely new restrooms, kitchen equipment, entry points, and overall design for their loyal customers to enjoy!
