This document summarizes research on distance learning from 1988 to 2008 and proposes priorities for future research. It notes that early research focused on describing distance learning activities and comparing it to traditional education. More recent qualitative research examines teaching strategies and student outcomes. The globalization of education introduces issues of access, equity, language and culture that need further study. Going forward, research should improve teaching and learning, be faculty-driven, address social and cultural barriers to online education, and evaluate new technologies and learning styles.
