Everyone is a communicator! Emerging ideas for CPWF communication in research for development September 30, 2010
Purpose of presentation is to present emerging ideas on communication in CPWF and get feedback from everyone ,[object Object]
Useful/Confusing
What’s missingIt is the straw-man/burning man presentation!
What is communication: The inception of an Idea Beyond American scientists and educators we all know smoking is bad? Is this your idea? Been carefully crafted… Source: Terry Clayton
Communication is not linear Successful farmer is in an important position between the two clans, and a reasonably important source of problem solving. Strategy of linking in to the central nodes of both subgroups, thereby enhancing access to problem solving resources. Accessing external resources
Observations on CPWF CPWF has important messages for different scales and levels (local, national, basin, global) Transformation in how water is managed Insights to make poverty alleviation more effective Insights into what is working and what is not Strengthening social-ecological resilience of communities Diversity – each basin is different. But each basin also has something to learn Identity –Adaptable, localized but consistent - everyone has a role to play A lot of information being produced – how to use, how to get out intermediate products
Different types of communication (applicable to CPWF)
Overall CPWF community Communication cuts across different levels and scales
Knowledge Management Team
Emerging communication strategies Use strategic communication approach: the use of communication in a planned, strategic way in order to bring about positive social change
Emerging communication strategies (2) Networked approach CPWF Global KM Team Communication Basin 2 Coordination Basin 1 Coordination Partners, media, and others we will work with to spread our ideas M1 M2 N1 N2 Farmer groups, water groups, Farmer groups, youth groups, etc
Emerging strategies (3) Support production of intermediate products from research (since time bound program) Develop partnerships to disseminate materials through other knowledge bases and channels Have a consistent and localized CPWF identity Open access and open source
What we will be doing to support you? Spaces to foster collaboration between basins using IT and other mechanisms Flickr, youtube, slideshare, document repository, revitalize e-letter
Support (2) Support to basin teams in using strategic communication approaches & sharing across basins Support to disseminating research findings Spaces to publish intermediate results and stories Providing linkage to global media sources Repackaging and communicating phase 1 results
Support (3): Practical guidelines & support materials Consistent but localized identity: builds identity for both basin and CPWF globally. Practical Guidelines for basins and projects use of logos, Standard text, etc Publishing guidelines Standard acknowledgements Provision of materials for display at meetings/handing out to key people, etc.

  • 18. Questions for discussion What support would you like in terms of communication? What gaps do you see in the current communication thinking? What is not clear? What other ideas/suggestion do you have

Hinweis der Redaktion

  1. Introduce self – found the meeting very interesting, similarities to the work I have done in Laos with NAFRI.How do we scale out technologiesHow do we provide communities with options and not prescriptionsHow do we reach policymakers – and who are the ‘invisible hands’ that influence policyThere is not one solution, but improved access to information great involvement of people in communication assisted in the process.
  2. Our attitudes towards smoking/our ideas about it have been crafted over years – social marketing campaigns, scientific research, advocacy campaignsCommunication is the creation of a shared sense of meaning – it is not just telling someone what to do but It is not just communicating the message but having someone do something with it – the ‘change’It is infecting people with an idea
  3. Farmers receive information from multiple sources. Their use of information and decisions are often based on who they trust the most in the village. In this social network analysis you can see the Village headman who is the main trusted source of information, but there are also others there is a successful farmer Communication is not linearCommunication is both a process and product. Communication when used in a systematic and strategic manner can enhance and support change processes
  4. Community – the imoportant thing is that we gain strength through a consistent identity – goes beyond the logos but how we introduce ourselves, present ourselves. Need to think that we are working as part of a wider community beyond your institution that is the
  5. Communication cuts across all levels and scales and is something that each group within CPWF does.
  6. Strategic communication is a planned and ‘systematic’ processThe assessment is often based on the KAS and defines what you changes you want to seeDesign focuses on developing a range of messages, communication channels and appeals Testing is an important part of rpdouction process and is often overlooked. Need to find ways to test out materials on the user to get their perspective. Use is not just about dissemination but finding ways that materials can be used in the process of chageImportant that process is evlauted to understand communication’s contribution
  7. Develop a network to support the use of communication at different levels. Again, not a linear approach but hope to see verical and horizontal linkages – creatlon of linkages so that knowledge and infomrtion can be shared across basins and with partners. Taking something from the project level and giving it space at the global level – taking global products and adapting and contextualizing them at the local leve.
  8. 1. 1. Development of CPWF wide spaces: f, etc. Space on website and server if needed, also the e-letter which will be operatioan
  9. 2. in knowledge sharing communication for development, use of communication tools. Taking innovation from one basin and sharing with others3. (finding the right journal, disseminating findings widely, linking to global knowledge bases, portals, etc)4. (Working paper series, reference materials, highlights, policy briefs)5. Developing programming and outlets to get stories and messages from field to global audience 6. Sourcebook, video, policy briefs
  10. we all engage in communications and need to be proactive about it Different approaches are needed to reach different groups – needs to be built into the research process itself and there are systematic processes, tools and approaches that can be used to help you with this
