Expectations to Ensure Product Success
INTRO
In today's economy most organization have strict budget constraints which limits the amount of resources
that can be dedicated to new products and product enhancements. Add to this, the fact that most
industries are increasingly competitive and companies that do not keep up and adapt to fast changes find
themselves rapidly fading out of existence. The product management professional is becoming the go-to
person for everything ranging from what does the industry want/need to prioritizing and roadmap management to what programming
language should be used to build it all. We'll be discussing how you can succeed in small orgs and/or with limited resources and
how can "jack-of-all-trades" PMs ensure product success(?)
Each week, The Global Product Management Talk features an expert guest speaker who asks questions of the participants on
Twitter in a Socratic discussion. The speaker and co-hosts broadcast their comments over BlogTalkRadio. The transcript of Tweets
and podcast are available after the live event.

QUESTIONS DISCUSSED
Q1 Who dictates how you prioritize what's going to be built into the product?
Q2 How do you communicate to clients that their requested feature(s) are not coming soon?
Biggest mistake is saying to clients "we have limited resources".
Q3 How do you stay centered w/roadmap & vision w/o reacting to limited resources & changing
requirements
It's easy to fall into a reactive mode and let your roadmap fade away as you try to balance vision
and production issues. Share some tactics that have proven successful in maintaining this
balance.
Q4 How do you include key steps & teams into go-to-market strategies?
In highly-competitive industries and fast-moving technologies how do you build go-to-market
strategies without bypassing key steps and teams like UX/UAT, internal communication,
marketing, sales training and ensure your strategy is not obsolete by the time you're ready to go
live?
Q5 What is an appropriate percentage of time a PM should allocate to industry research? with the
understanding that there are only so many hours to dedicate to all other tasks without burning
out?

brainmates Do your top clients dictate, does the competition, or do org leaders win out on what should be
built?#prodmgmttalk 4:11pm
roadmapwarrior A1: what's the best fit for the market & gives you most bang for your buck per your
KPIs #prodmgmttalk 4:11pm
lmckeogh @wapolanco : dictate is a loaded term. A good PM has to hold some line or gets run over by number of

saeedwkhan A1 - Aren't Dev resources always scarce? Prioritization is based on aligning with objectives, addressing
market needs etc. #prodmgmttalk 4:14pm

brainmates BTW - Welcome everyone! Thanks for joining @wapolanco for this week's talk. @cindyfsolomon is having
technical issues #prodmgmttalk 4:17pm
saeedwkhan @brainmates Prioritization is subjective to be honest. Some based on $$ (i.e. deal funnel) else based on
longer term goals #prodmgmttalk 4:18pm
brainmates That must mean we're insane all the time RT @roadmapwarrior: When resources are scarce, so is sanity
:) #prodmgmttalk 4:18pm
lmckeogh A1: In addition to data, can make some tradeoffs by grouping enhancements by themes and cust.

ErikaLAndersen RT @brainmates: That must mean were insane all the time RT @roadmapwarrior: When resources
are scarce, so is sanity :) #prodmgmttalk 4:19pm
wapolanco @saeedwkhan At the end of the day though it boils down to $$$ unless you're in a non-
profit. #prodmgmttalk 4:19pm
roadmapwarrior @brainmates Prioritization can also be affected by whether you need your technology to be broader
vs deeper to solve problems #prodmgmttalk 4:19pm
saeedwkhan @roadmapwarrior Act. ppl w/ unlimited resources r usu the insane ones. Witness wealthy buying jewelry
for their pets etc. #prodmgmttalk 4:19pm
lmckeogh A1: other ways to manage competing priorities is to turn the question back to the customer and have them
chose x/y number #prodmgmttalk 4:20pm
brainmates Agree! RT @wapolanco: @saeedwkhan At the end of the day though it boils down to $$$ unless youre in
a non-profit. #prodmgmttalk 4:20pm
saeedwkhan @wapolanco $$$ can't always be quantified. i.e. how to quantify $$$ of good arch.. Sometimes, just
need to do what's right. #prodmgmttalk 4:21pm

brainmates Q2 What steps should PMs take to communicate to clients that their requested feature(s) are not coming
soon? #prodmgmttalk 4:21pm
wapolanco @saeedwkhan I've been on both situations PM with and w/o resource constraints. Takes more smarts,
patience, grit on former :) #prodmgmttalk 4:21pm

Erry1HatesChris RT @brainmates Q2 What steps should PMs take to communicate to clients that their requested
feature(s) are not coming soon? #prodmgmttalk 4:23pm
saeedwkhan @wapolanco Agreed. Constraints force (good) decision making and tradeoffs. Helps focus on what
really is important. #prodmgmttalk 4:24pm
lmckeogh A2: I'd try to be as upfront as possible. Can a compromise be worked out or another feature supersede
request #prodmgmttalk 4:24pm
wapolanco Does roadmap have deliverable dates? Clients will want to see/hear WHEN features are
coming.#prodmgmttalk 4:25pm
roadmapwarrior A2: Depends on whether "not coming soon" actually means "on the roadmap" or "this contradicts the
product vision" #prodmgmttalk 4:25pm
lmckeogh @wapolanco : roadmap dates become vaguer as you go out in time. I can tell you when for next quarter or
2 tops. #prodmgmttalk 4:26pm

brainmates @roadmapwarrior: A4 I like the start small and test concept. That way you can do it well #prodmgmttalk -
4:51 PM Nov 21st, 2011
wapolanco The answer is DON'T skip steps in SDLC but between meetings, fire drills, etc. it's difficult not
to. #prodmgmttalk -4:51 PM Nov 21st, 2011

brainmates Q5 What is an appropriate % of time a PM should allocate to industry research given amnt of tactical tasks
PM has?#prodmgmttalk -4:53 PM Nov 21st, 2011
saeedwkhan @brainmates And Q5 is? :-) #prodmgmttalk -4:53 PM Nov 21st, 2011
cindyfsolomon RT @brainmates: Q5 What's appropriate % of time PM should allocate to industry research given amnt
of tactical tasks PM has? #prodmgmttalk -4:54 PM Nov 21st, 2011
VFigatelix A5: 15 - 20% I would say it's what I try to do... TRY#prodmgmttalk -4:54 PM Nov 21st, 2011
saeedwkhan @brainmates A5 -- completely depends. Also, should not assume single PM does all
research. #prodmgmttalk -4:55 PM Nov 21st, 2011
cindyfsolomon A5 difficult question to answer...RT saeedwkhan completely depends- shouldnt assume 1 PM does all
research..#prodmgmttalk -4:56 PM Nov 21st, 2011
brainmates Agree! @saeedwkhan: PMs should share insights. Also should leverage off research fr other departments
- marketing, sales #prodmgmttalk -4:56 PM Nov 21st, 2011
wapolanco Q5 is fundamental to building strategy and maintaining roadmap. In my view a good PM considers this a
top priority. 40% #prodmgmttalk -4:56 PM Nov 21st, 2011
VFigatelix RT @saeedwkhan: @brainmates A5 -- completely depends. Also, should not assume single PM does all
research.#prodmgmttalk -4:56 PM Nov 21st, 2011
cindyfsolomon Wow! RT @wapolanco: Q5 is fundamental to building strategy & maintaining roadmap. good PM
considers this a top priority. 40% #prodmgmttalk -4:57 PM Nov 21st, 2011
roadmapwarrior A5: Stumped on a # but could also depend on where you are in lifecycle-more res for GTM, less but
continual for later versions #prodmgmttalk -4:58 PM Nov 21st, 2011
brainmates Agree with @wapolanco that PMs should spend more time analysing mkt but its not the
norm. #prodmgmttalk -4:58 PM Nov 21st, 2011
wapolanco Without research (incl client visits) you can't build strategy/ roadmap. #prodmgmttalk -4:59 PM Nov 21st,

#prodmgmt #prodmgmttalk -4:59 PM Nov 21st, 2011
saeedwkhan @wapolanco At times, I've spent ~80% of my time doing that, but 40% would be great! Overall for me it's
closer to 10%-15% #prodmgmttalk -4:59 PM Nov 21st, 2011

saeedwkhan @wapolanco -- actually, on second thought, it's probably 20% or so WRT market research.
#prodmgmttalk -5:00 PM Nov 21st, 2011
brainmates Ahhh time's up already. Any final comments?#prodmgmttalk -5:01 PM Nov 21st, 2011
