How to Develop a
High-Retention Culture
BY Bruce Tulgan
Step One: Push Out the Low Performers
 As a leader, you cannot let low performance be an option
 Why?
 High performers hate to work with low performers
 Low performers cause unnecessary problems that others have to fix
 Low performers still get paid
 Low performers ultimately send the message to the rest of your team that low
performance is an option for everyone
 Remember: With some people, you should worry that they might leave. With low
performers, you should worry they might stay.
Step Two: Put Yourself in a Position to Be a
Generous and Flexible Leader
 Set people up for success: tell them what to do, and how to do it
 Make expectations clear so that your team can meet and exceed them
 Let your employees know what really counts when it comes to their performance
 Put employees into an upward spiral of performance, which will put you in a position of
being able to do more to take care of those employees over time
Step Three: Take the Reasons People Might Want to
Leave and Turn Them into Reasons They Want to
Stay (and Work Harder)
 Money and salary are of course two valuable retention tools, but there are often more
rewards under a manager’s discretion that are overlooked:
 Schedule
 Relationships at work
 Task choice
 Learning opportunities
 Location and workspace
 When managers are more engaged with people, it is easier for them to identify, and
help employees get more of, the things they want and that truly matter to them in their
job

Step One: Push Out the Low Performers  As a leader, you cannot let low performance be an option  Why?  High performers hate to work with low performers  Low performers cause unnecessary problems that others have to fix  Low performers still get paid  Low performers ultimately send the message to the rest of your team that low performance is an option for everyone  Remember: With some people, you should worry that they might leave. With low performers, you should worry they might stay.

Step Two: Put Yourself in a Position to Be a Generous and Flexible Leader  Set people up for success: tell them what to do, and how to do it  Make expectations clear so that your team can meet and exceed them  Let your employees know what really counts when it comes to their performance  Put employees into an upward spiral of performance, which will put you in a position of being able to do more to take care of those employees over time

Step Three: Take the Reasons People Might Want to Leave and Turn Them into Reasons They Want to Stay (and Work Harder)  Money and salary are of course two valuable retention tools, but there are often more rewards under a manager’s discretion that are overlooked:  Schedule  Relationships at work  Task choice  Learning opportunities  Location and workspace  When managers are more engaged with people, it is easier for them to identify, and help employees get more of, the things they want and that truly matter to them in their job
