2. Fertilizer
• Farming makes the fruits, vegetables,
and grains we eat
• Fertilizer used to grow crops pollutes
the water system
• Chemical fertilizers run off from fields
and animal manure runs off from
barnyards
• They are washed into ponds, streams,
rivers, and oceans
3. Pollutant
• Fertilizers are rich in nutrients
• Too much fertilizer can give too many
nutrients into the water system
• Then plants grow too quickly and block
waterways— algae bloom
• Algae bloom turns waters bright green
• Plants use up all the nutrients in the water
and then die
4. Bacteria
• Manure has a lot of nutrients
• Manure carries bacteria
• Bacteria has population explosions in the
water
• Increase in bacteria takes away oxygen in
water
• Bacteria can use up so much oxygen that
plants and animals in the water suffocate and
die
5. What can we do?
• Find out exactly how much fertilizer to spread
in the soil for each crop type and then extra
fertilizer wont wash into the water
• Find ways to recycle manure
