‘Afghanistan, a 25-years’ struggle for a better life for its people and livestock’
How a small NGO can have a lasting impact…..
From its start during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan until present days, the story of a small
Dutch veterinary NGO committed to make an impact on the life of ordinary Afghan people unfolds.
The NGO tries to achieve this goal by focusing on improving the health and productivity of the local
livestock population, an area often overlooked by emergency aid and development organizations.
The story goes hand-in-hand with the struggle of the Afghan people to survive the brutal Soviet
occupation, the Mujahideen led freedom fight and subsequent internal conflicts, followed by the
Taliban oppression and a severe drought. This book presents an inside story, describing the world of
aid through the eyes of an NGO that had to deal with large international agencies and institutions,
the intermittent presence of bilateral and multi-lateral donors, and a collapsed national government
which has slowly regained its own role since 9/11.
Over 300 pictures enlighten the activities of the Dutch Committee for Afghanistan and the
description of rural life in Afghanistan, over the past quarter of a century.
