Implications of remote application and
virtual desktop delivery on the Cloud
Remote application access and delivery presents a significant challenge in the modern
enterprise as the growing demand for a secure, multi-device-friendly workplace that allows
employees to access their applications from any device type, from any location, becomes
the industry standard.
Many decision makers understand that moving to the Cloud and employing Virtual Desktop
Infrastructure (VDI) solutions hold great promise for reducing costs, improving mission
effectiveness, and creating new areas of business growth and efficiencies within their
organization. However, concerns remain around cloud strategy, readiness, transformation,
and deployment: Is a cloud-based solution necessary and appropriate? Which deployment
model is most suitable? How many of the organization’s applications are capable of scaling
in a cloud environment? To help address these and other challenges, organizations need a
low-risk approach to experience the Cloud firsthand and understand the operational and
financial implications to their business.
Providing proof-of-concept through the AWS Accelerator
for Citrix program
Booz Allen Hamilton, a leading strategy and technology consulting firm, has partnered
with Amazon Web Services (AWS) and its Accelerator for Citrix program to offer a unique
opportunity that enables our clients to test and verify Citrix services hosted on the AWS
Cloud. Running the Citrix platform on the AWS Cloud promises enterprise agility, high service
availability and reduced operating costs without impacting the Citrix user’s experience,
application performance, or security.
The Citrix environment includes an implementation of Citrix XenApp, the industry-leading
solution for providing remote application and desktop services, which allows employees
to securely work from anywhere on any device. The trial program allows decision makers
to evaluate the operational and financial impacts of hosting Citrix in their on-premise data
centers as compared to running Citrix XenApp hosted on the AWS Cloud.
Fully functional and scaled
• Citrix trial environment deployed on AWS using the Citrix Workspace Cloud SaaS application.
This Citrix environment is scaled to support 25 Citrix users and is hosted on AWS.
Providing Low-risk Transformation for Cloud-based Citrix Environments
A structured approach
• Validate baseline environment:
Review the current-state Citrix environment
including hardware, software and configuration
to ensure the critical features required to support
primary operational activities and strategic goals
are met.
• Measure financial value:
Provide models comparing as-is to AWS
• Facilitate trials:
Deploy trial environments and create up to 25 test
users to that environment to ensure any migration
to the Cloud is operationally tested and validated

Determining the value of cloud computing
Working with the solution architect, our cloud economic analysts gather current state
architecture and costs using proprietary tools designed to expedite the data gathering
process. This enables us to re-architect the solution in AWS and build out a baseline cost
model using our Citrix Cloud Assessment Methodology (CCAM), which is based on our
extensive cloud experience and evolving best practices gained across multiple industries.
These models demonstrate that cloud computing not only changes the linear relationship
between computing requirements and cost, but also the way capital planning and budgeting
are conducted. This enables organizations to change the way they think about, plan, and
determine value of cloud computing.
At the forefront of adoption
Booz Allen brings more than 100 years of experience across industry backgrounds, as well
as advanced technology expertise to deliver comprehensive cloud solutions. We have
achieved a position of thought and action leadership in the adoption of cloud computing.
From the earliest testing of cloud computing constructs and vendors, transition planning,
and technological methodologies to the highly regarded Cloud Computing Summit hosted
by Booz Allen in October 2008, the firm has been at the forefront in understanding,
developing, adapting, and upgrading effective tools and paradigms. We continue to build on
our integrated suite of cloud capabilities by developing solutions to real client problems.
Some of these solutions are possible through our partnership with AWS, leveraging partner
programs to support our development of repeatable cloud-based solutions. Booz Allen
is an AWS Premier Consulting Partner and has been since the program’s inception.
This distinction reflects the significant investment that we have made in the partnership
to provide exceptional AWS solutions and customer service across federal and
commercial organizations.
Booz Allen has a clear understanding of and models for effective cloud
computing-based life-cycle cost and economic modeling. We have studied all of these
costs, their relationships, and the impact of moving to the Cloud. Our certified cost analysts
have worked closely with IT architects and strategists to understand cloud computing and
have constructed detailed cost models that are used for internal projects and client-specific
pilot programs.
By helping our customers fully understand and embrace the full impacts of cloud migration,
organizations are better able to position themselves to leverage the benefits of cloud
computing, including increased productivity, increased return on performance, and
significant cost savings.
