2. Song and Artist
A little bit about the artist: Muse are an English rock based band originating from Devon. There
styles consist of a mix of genres such as, space rock, alternative rock, progressive rock, alternative
rock, hard rock, symphonic rock and electronica. Muse's music videos are generally a mixture of
conceptual and the three band members singing and playing the song. It shows them in differing
locations, not having any link to the song being played. Also the concepts they use do not
generally match the music that is being played, but just act to look cool and make the music video
more enjoyable and interesting. An example of this is the song 'Supremacy' during this video the
group are seen performing a garage setting and amphitheatre. Along side this there are surfers
with their faces painted like skulls which gives a surreal theme, which seems to be a recurring
theme throughout their music videos.
The song we have chosen to make a music video for is ‘Panic Station’, the reasoning behind this
being because it is an upbeat and fast track, and is flexible for a variety of ideas.
3. Idea
We began thinking about the idea of our music video, we felt that because of the fast paced
feeling behind the song, a zombie apocalypse would be appropriate for the music. The song starts
off slow, so we thought it would be best to begin with a normal day, and as the music began to
increase in speed we decided to reveal that the zombie apocalypse had begun. The name of the
song reflects our idea, the word "Panic" is an expected feeling when there is a zombie apocalypse
so we thought that would fit well with the theme. Lyrically, the song is perfect for a zombie
theme, "Ooh, 1, 2, 3, 4 fire's in eyes, and this chaos, it defies imagination, Ooh, 5, 6, 7, minus 9
lives, You've arrived at panic station" The words "fire's", "chaos" both reflect anarchy and
devastation. Also, the counting to the number 9 adds a countdown, as if there is not much time
left.
The actual idea itself consists of two best friends, who both have an obsession with zombies.
They go to school and are confronted by their ‘rivals’ (the cool kids) the friends Ben and Laurence
end up running away to their class and enter the room to find a news report being played on the
television, the zombie epidemic caused by costa coffee ingredients. The two friends see this as
their time to shine and they gear up for action. Meanwhile, one of the cool kids realises he has
been drinking costa and he turns into a zombie.
17. Props/Costume
Props:
Sponge – This is a simple prop used in the opening montage, used by both Laurence and Ben to
scrub their armpits.
Tooth Brush – This is another simple prop, again used in the opening montage by Ben and
Laurence, this time to brush their teeth.
Costa Cup – This is a more significant prop and it needs to be held by Brodie in the opening scene
and when he realises he has got the costa virus.
Gun – This is the gun that will be used to attempt to kill Zombie Brodie, needs to look realistic so
colour would be black.
Pillow – This will be the final prop used in the music video, it will be used to put Laurence out of
his misery.
Costume:
All of the characters will wear a suit throughout, showing that they are students at a school.
When the epidemic kicks off the costume of Ben and Laurence changes to their ties around their
head and their shirts with their button undone.
18. Effects/Editing
We plan for the editing and in particular the transitions is to be primarily cuts
rather than more complex ones like crossfades or dissolves. We want this
because it will reflect the fast paced theme and music. Also we will focus on
making the cuts match the beats of the song, just to generally make it flow
much smoother and look nicer as a whole. There will be no modifications to
the audio itself, however before the actual music starts there will be a voice
over setting the scene, this again will have no modifications but a fade in and
out, showing the slow paced nature of this particular bit.
