The Holly Festival of Ashura commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Mohammed, who died in a 7th century battle for leadership of the Islamic world. Pilgrims honor his death by flagellating themselves with chains and cutting themselves with swords to express their grief.
