What is vitamin?
A vitamin is an organic compound
and a vital nutrient that an
organism requeirs in limited
ammounts. An organic compound
is called a vitamin when the
organism cannot synthesize the
compound in sufficient quantities.
@ FAT SOLUBLE VITAMINS
Vitamins A, D , E & K
@ WATER SOLUBLE VITAMINS
Vitamins B complex and Vitamin C
 Fat soluble vitamins are a
type of vitamins that can
dissolve in fats and oils. Fat
soluble vitamins are
absorbed along with fats in
the diet and can be stored
in the body’s fatty tissue.
They come from plant and
animal foods or dietary
supplyments. Vitamins A ,
D , E & K are Fat soluble
Vitamins.
FAT SOLUBLE VITAMIN ‘E’
Vitamin E benefits the body by
acting as an antioxident and
protecting vitamins A and C, red
blood cell and essential fatty
acids from destruction. Vitamin E
might help prevent Heart
diseases and cancer. Another
name of vitamin E is
TOCOPHEROL.
Vitamin E
FOOD SOURCE FOR VITAMIN ‘E’
About 60% of vitamin E in the diet comes from
vegetable oil (Soybean, corn, cottonseed and
safflower). This also includes products made with
vegetable oil ( margarine and salad dressing).
Vitamin E sources also include fruits and
vegetables, grains, nuts (Almonds and hazelnuts),
seeds ( Sunflower) and fortified cereals.
FAT SOLUBLE VITAMIN ‘K’
• Vitamin K is a group of structurally similar,
fat-soluble vitamins the human body requires
for complete synthesis of certain proteins that
are prerequisites for blood coagulation and
which the body also needs for controlling
binding of calcium in bones and other
tissues, and played an essential role in
normal Blood clotting, promotting bone
health, and helping to produce proteins for
blood, bones and kidneys. Another name of
Vitamin ‘K’ is
PHYLLOQUINONE.
VITAMIN ‘K’
FOOD SOURCE FOR VITAMIN ‘K’
• Good food source of vitamin ‘K’ are green,
leafy-vegetabled such as turnip greens,
spinach, cauliflower, cabbage, and broccolli,
and certain vegetables oils including
saybean oil, cotton-seed oil, canola oil, and
olive oil. Animal foods , in general contain
limited amounts of Vitamin ‘K’.
FUNCTION OF VITAMIN ‘E’
 Vitamin E is an antioxidant. This means it protects
body tissue from damage caused by substances
called free radicals, which can harm cells, tissues,
and organs. They are believed to play a role in
certain conditions related to aging.
 The body also needs vitamin E to help keep the
immune system strong against viruses and
bacteria.
 Vitamin E is also important in the formation of red
blood cells and it helps the body use vitamin K. It
also helps widen blood vessels and keep blood
from clotting inside them.
 Whether vitamin E can prevent cancer, heart
disease, dementia, liver disease, and stroke still
• Vitamin K is a fat-soluble vitamin, so
your body stores it in fat tissue and
the liver. It is best known for its role in
helping blood clot, or coagulate,
properly.
• Vitamin K is used to reduce the risk of
bleeding in liver disease, conditions
where your body doesn’t absorb
enough vitamin K, or if you take
antibiotics for a long time
A vitamin deficiency can cause a
disease or syndrome known as an
avitaminosis or hypovitaminosis.
This usually refers to a long-term
deficiency of a vitamin.
VITAMIN ‘E’ DEFICIENCY
 Vitamin E deficiency or hypovitaminosis E is a
deficiency of vitamin E. It causes nerve problems
due to poor conduction of electrical impulses along
nerves due to changes in nerve membrane
structure and function.
 Signs and symptoms
 Signs of vitamin E deficiency include the following:
 Neuromuscular problems
 Neurological problems
 Anemia-due to oxidative damage to red blood cells
TREATMENT
The treatment is
some form of
Vitamin E
supplementation.
VITAMIN ‘K’ DEFICIENCY
 Vitamin K deficiency or hypovitaminosis K is a form
of avitaminosis, resulting from insufficient vitamin K.
 Signs and symptoms
 Symptoms include stomach pains; risk of massive
uncontrolled bleeding; cartilage calcification; and
severe malformation of developing bone or deposition
of insoluble calcium salts in the walls of arteries. In
infants, it can cause some birth defects such as
underdeveloped face, nose, bones, and fingers.
TREATMENT
The medical
therapy for
vitamin K (VK)
deficiency
depends on the
severity of the
associated
bleeding and the
underlying
disease State.
THANK YOU….
