CHANGING OTHER FORMS IN INDIRECT
(= REPORTED) SPEECH
2. When we use indirect speech, we may need to change certain pronouns
and possessive forms in the noun clause. We may also change time and
place expressions, but this depends on when and where we report the
statement.
DIRECT SPEECH INDIRECT SPEECH
He said, “You shouldn’t go.” He said that I shouldn’t go.
She said, “I’ll be leaving
tomorrow.”
She said that she would be
leaving the next day.
He said, “My brother doesn’t
want to be here.”
He said that his brother didn’t
want to be there.
