2. Major factors-
1- Better standards of living
“The urbanization of India is taking place at faster
rate than in the rest of the world”
By 2030, 40.76% of India's population will be living in
urban areas compared to about 28.4 % now.
3. Urbanization is a sign of liberalization but the condition of
slum dweller was even worse than that of the poor in
villages.
About 56 % of the urban population lives in slum
conditions.
Thirty people die every hours in road accidents in the
country.
4.
5. Cities play a growing and central role in economic
development-
1- Urban sectors accounts for more than 50% of GDP in many
countries (65% in India)
2- Urban population is growing and the transport demand also.
Urban transport is essential also in the fight against poverty.
1- Transport provides access for all to jobs, education and
healthy service
2- Between 5% and 10% of income is spent on transport, more in
large cities.
6. A people-friendly city is that which provides a good
quality of life.
An efficient, safe, reliable and comfortable public
transportation system is one of the pre-requisites of
good living.
8. 5 million motorized trip are made every day, of which
only about 2.24 million or 42% are made by the public
transportation system(PTS) i.e. buses and local trains.
That means the rest of the trips are made by personal
vehicles leading to traffic bottlenecks, high pollution
levels and a steep increase in fuel consumption.
The increasing pressure of the burgeoning population is
putting Lucknow Transportation System under constant
pressure.
