2. What is A Leader?
A leader is someone who can see how
things can be improved and who rallies
people to move toward that better
vision.
What Is Leadership?
Leadership is a process of social influence,
which maximizes the efforts of others,
towards the achievement of a goal.
4. Leadership Styles
A Leadership Style refers to a leader’s way of providing direction,
implementing plans, and motivating people.
Your style
describes
HOW you
lead.
5. Importance of
Leadership
Leadership transforms potential into reality .
Leadership is not mere using people and their
potential for realizing an organization’s goals. It
has the aim of raising the level of human conduct
and ethical aspiration of both leaders and the
led.
The leader should elevate , inspire his followers
to higher things in life
6. Transpersonal
Leadership?
The term “transpersonal” refers to trans, meaning “to go
beyond,” and personal, which refers to the ego. This new
leadership style places emphasis on transcending the ego
Transpersonal leadership integrates the intellectual, emotional
and spiritual intelligences. It is based on enabling leaders to
transcend their egos and make decisions from higher levels of
ethical and cognitive maturity. Transpersonal leaders are
encouraged to be both radical and authentic, acting on
rigorously tested values and deeply held ethical principles that
inform a strongly developed conscience.
7. India’s Growth Story?
In its seventh decade of independence, India stands
on the pinnacle of major change: a transformation
that could lead to unprecedented economic growth
along with radical improvements in the nation’s
Human Development Index (HDI). The recent electoral
mandate for development is a more immediate signal
of Indians’ desire for growth and for the benefits of
growth to be extended to all members of society
8. Current Status
of Leadership
in India
Research indicates that at least 50% of leaders at senior and mid-
level positions have substantial improvements to make to qualify
as good leaders. Even the good leaders need to make significant
improvement in some areas of their leadership competence.
9. Leadership Development
Intervention • leadership development
intervention takes leaders on a
journey of discovery,
• awareness and personal
development. It is based on
emotional intelligence which
has emerged over the last 20
years, in parallel to greater
knowledge about how the
brain works – neuroscience –
to become an established
science.
10. Assessment and Finding of Case
The difference between observed and desired [The difference
Index-DI]was measured for each individual behavior which were
grouped into 19 emotional intelligence(EI) capabilities and six
leadership styles.
The largest average difference between observed and
desired behavior (0.49) occurs in the area of Self-
Management and Relationship Management which
suggest these are the areas which many Indian leaders
might focus on to improve their leadership. The EI
competency where Indian leaders are strongest is in Self
Awareness.
11. The table also shows which leadership style and EI Competency each EI Capability is connected to.

Assessment and Finding of Case
12. It was found that in the star leaders, not a single technical or purely cognitive competency emerged as their unique
strength. What emerged as two of their most unique strengths was drive to achieve results (achievement orientation)
and the ability to take initiative. We need to ensure that Indian leadership improves in these areas to reach the
standards of international leadership.
Leaders need to catalyse change and challenge the status quo.
Conflict management and influence are two of the most visible tools of leadership. They also complement each other.
In a study of the senior leaders in 98 of the largest India-based companies (Cappelli et al, 2010), more than 50%
identified the following qualities as the most relevant for their leadership:
1. 61% – envisioning and articulating a path to the future; strategic thinking; guiding change.
2. 57% – being inspirational, accountable, and entrepreneurial.
3. 52% – supporting careful talent selection; grooming; practices that advance business goals.
Interventions should be based on the needs to develop emotional intelligence competencies and focus on relevant
granular behaviors which enhance their adaptability to perform all leadership styles.
