There are two main types of manufacturing systems: intermittent manufacturing which is characterized by made-to-order products and continuous manufacturing which is characterized by high production volumes and inventory storage. Plant layout involves determining the spatial arrangement of departments, workstations, equipment, and processes to optimize material and information flow while ensuring employee safety, comfort, and efficiency to maximize profits. Developing a good plant layout requires decisions around factory location, capacity, manufacturing methods, and material handling.

and production operations, which will enable the
manufacturing process to be carried on
efficiently.

be classified into:
Intermittent Manufacturing: characterized by made to order
products, low production volume, general purpose equipment,

 A layout is the physical configuration
of departments ,work stations and
equipments in the conversion process.
Or
 It is the spatial arrangement of
physical resources used to create the
product.

It is the method of allocating machines &
equipments ,various production processes and other
necessary services involved in the transformation
process of a product with the available space of factory
to perform various operations in the most efficient &
convenient manner providing output of high quality &
minimum cost.
