Recruitment for Class XV
2015-2016
Mission
The Agricultural Leadership Program is conducted
by the Agricultural Leadership Foundation of
Hawai`i, whose mission is to:
Provide Leadership Development
Opportunities For People Committed to
Strengthening Agriculture in Hawai`i
Organizational History
1982 - 1986
-ALFH founded as a tax exempt non-profit
- Goal to build cadre of leaders during transition from
plantation to diversified agriculture.
- Initial funding from County of Hawai`i, later matched by
grant from Kellogg Foundation launched the program led
by Monty Richards and Jane Yamashiro of UH-Hilo.
1987
-ALFH partnered with UH CTAHR and Donna Ching
began coordinating and delivering training activities as
Program Director.
Organizational History
2010-2013
-Donna Ching prepares for retirement after 25 years as
Program Director and trains Pauline Sato to run Class
XIII.
-Curriculum for ALP updated.
-Peter Adler joins the team to provide leadership training
seminars for ALP Class XIV.
2006
-Kim Coffee-Isaak hired as ALFH Executive Director
Organizational History
2014-present
-Kim Coffee-Isaak resigns as Executive Director and
Lisa Soong is hired as Administrative Coordinator.
-Donna Ching returns to the program to provide
facilitation training for Class XV, joining Peter Adler and
Pauline Sato.

ALFH Programs
ALFH has three core
programs:
• Agricultural Leadership
Program
•Youth Agricultural
Leadership Program (new)
• Bi-annual Statewide
Agricultural Conference
Need for Leadership
Hawai`i needs answers to hard questions:
• How can we become food and energy
secure?
• How do we balance the need for agricultural
lands to grow food and biofuels with land for
housing and tourism?
• Who gets to use water and how much?
• How do we diversify our economy AND protect
our land, water, crops and native ecosystems?
• How can different forms of agriculture (e.g.
conventional, organic, and biotech) co-exist?
Need for Leadership
Well-trained and effective leaders are essential for
solving complex problems.
For agriculture to become sustainable, it needs more
cohesion and a stronger voice. And more than ever,
Hawai‘i needs active, proactive and visionary leaders to
bring us together to address key issues that affect all of
our communities.

Who Participates
ALP is for promising leaders from Hawaii’s
agricultural, natural resources management
and rural communities.
Program Purpose
ALP develops knowledgeable,
multi-cultural leaders for
Hawaii’s food, agricultural, and
natural resource industries
who have the skills necessary
for leadership at local, state
and national levels and will put
those skills into practice.
Desired Outcomes
• Graduates will develop strong leadership capacity that will
improve the health of agriculture in Hawaiʻi based on in-
depth knowledge about agriculture and natural resources
management systems, leadership skills, and broad as well
as deep relationships.
• Graduates will have a greater desire to provide
leadership for the common good that will result in an
improved quality of life for the citizens and communities of
Hawaiʻi.
• Graduates are recognized as industry and community leaders.

agriculture in Hawai`i

• Cultural heritage

Tuition
• Value of program is $20,000/person
• $5,000 (paid in 3 installments)
• Partial scholarships available
• Tuition covers air and ground transportation,
lodging (most), supplies, and instruction
Commitment
• Attendance at all seminars
and 2 week national trip
• Complete journal reflections,
readings, seminar preparation
• Participate in all follow-up
assessments and leadership
activities
• Complete capstone project
Commitment
• Continue leadership and
responsibility within the
industry or community
• Be actively committed to the
perpetuation of ALFH,
including an annual contribution

Agricultural Leadership Program Recruitment for Class XV 2015-2016

  • 2. Mission The Agricultural Leadership Program is conducted by the Agricultural Leadership Foundation of Hawai`i, whose mission is to: Provide Leadership Development Opportunities For People Committed to Strengthening Agriculture in Hawai`i
  • 3. Organizational History 1982 - 1986 -ALFH founded as a tax exempt non-profit - Goal to build cadre of leaders during transition from plantation to diversified agriculture. - Initial funding from County of Hawai`i, later matched by grant from Kellogg Foundation launched the program led by Monty Richards and Jane Yamashiro of UH-Hilo. 1987 -ALFH partnered with UH CTAHR and Donna Ching began coordinating and delivering training activities as Program Director.

Organizational History 2010-2013 -Donna Ching prepares for retirement after 25 years as Program Director and trains Pauline Sato to run Class XIII. -Curriculum for ALP updated. -Peter Adler joins the team to provide leadership training seminars for ALP Class XIV. 2006 -Kim Coffee-Isaak hired as ALFH Executive Director

Organizational History 2014-present -Kim Coffee-Isaak resigns as Executive Director and Lisa Soong is hired as Administrative Coordinator. -Donna Ching returns to the program to provide facilitation training for Class XV, joining Peter Adler and Pauline Sato.   • 6. ALFH Programs ALFH has three core programs: • Agricultural Leadership Program •Youth Agricultural Leadership Program (new) • Bi-annual Statewide Agricultural Conference
  • 7. Need for Leadership Hawai`i needs answers to hard questions: • How can we become food and energy secure? • How do we balance the need for agricultural lands to grow food and biofuels with land for housing and tourism? • Who gets to use water and how much? • How do we diversify our economy AND protect our land, water, crops and native ecosystems? • How can different forms of agriculture (e.g. conventional, organic, and biotech) co-exist?
  • 8. Need for Leadership Well-trained and effective leaders are essential for solving complex problems. For agriculture to become sustainable, it needs more cohesion and a stronger voice. And more than ever, Hawai‘i needs active, proactive and visionary leaders to bring us together to address key issues that affect all of our communities.
  • 9. Need for Leadership • Legislators, Government Department Administrators and other Policy Advocates • Natural Resources Management Groups and Projects (Invasive species, forestry, preservation of land, freshwater systems, nearshore and deep ocean) Need for cross-sector collaboration with:

Need for Leadership • Rural and Community Development Projects (interface with rural and urban, need for green space and “working” ag lands, smart growth and transportation projects) • Food Security Initiatives (school lunch programs, community gardens, backyard farms) • Energy, Health, Culture and Economic Development arenas
  • 11. Who Participates ALP is for promising leaders from Hawaii’s agricultural, natural resources management and rural communities.
  • 12. Program Purpose ALP develops knowledgeable, multi-cultural leaders for Hawaii’s food, agricultural, and natural resource industries who have the skills necessary for leadership at local, state and national levels and will put those skills into practice.
  • 13. Desired Outcomes • Graduates will develop strong leadership capacity that will improve the health of agriculture in Hawaiʻi based on in- depth knowledge about agriculture and natural resources management systems, leadership skills, and broad as well as deep relationships. • Graduates will have a greater desire to provide leadership for the common good that will result in an improved quality of life for the citizens and communities of Hawaiʻi. • Graduates are recognized as industry and community leaders.

  • 15. Core Curriculum • Educational site visits to - small and large farms, ranches, nurseries - processing plants - research facilities - community projects - conservation areas - ag-tourism venues • Legislative site visits Local and national trips!
  • 16. Core Curriculum • Two-week national trip to Washington, DC and state of group’s choice • Connect with Hawaii’s Congressional Delegation • Understand national issues that affect agriculture in Hawai`i • Learn new ideas
  • 17. Topics • Land, water and invasive species issues • Various methods of farming • Community empowerment • Agricultural research • Cultural heritage • Transportation • Policy-making • Food safety • Ag-tourism • Marketing • Labor
  • 18. Tuition • Value of program is $20,000/person • $5,000 (paid in 3 installments) • Partial scholarships available • Tuition covers air and ground transportation, lodging (most), supplies, and instruction
  • 19. Commitment • Attendance at all seminars and 2 week national trip • Complete journal reflections, readings, seminar preparation • Participate in all follow-up assessments and leadership activities • Complete capstone project
  • 20. Commitment • Continue leadership and responsibility within the industry or community • Be actively committed to the perpetuation of ALFH, including an annual contribution
