2. No one wants to engage a solicitor, but, unfortunately, that’s
just the way it is sometimes. When you need legal advice
or representation, it can often be a stressful time in life. To
help minimise the stress, you need to choose a good
solicitor and to do this, you need to pay attention to the
following five areas. Make sure that you're familiar these
points, so that you can make then best choice when
engaging your solicitor.
3. Tip 1: Are They Qualified and Specialist Enough to
Handle the Case?
The first thing that you're going to have to check is the
validity of their claims to be solicitors. Is the person
qualified? To find out, you need to do the two following
things:
Contact the Solicitor Regulation Authority. They will tell
you if the person is qualified, and they will tell you when
they were last inspected.
Visit The Law Society website, enter the details of the
solicitor, and they will return information about that
solicitor, such as whether they are accredited, which area
of law they practice, and various other things too.
4. However, this is only part of the issue. You also need to make
sure that the solicitor can deal with your particular case.
There are many different areas of law, and just because
someone is a solicitor, it doesn’t mean that they can
perform equally in all areas. You need to choose one that
specialises in your issue. For example, if you want to make
a will, you will need a Wills and Probate solicitor. If you
want to get a divorce, you will need a family court solicitor.
5. Tip 2: How Much Is the Solicitor Going to Take from
Your Compensation?
It’s important that you know what your fees are going to be
before you engage their service. Ask them to provide
details in writing. There are many different ways of
charging clients. Some solicitors charge as they go along;
this can be very expensive, particularly when some
unscrupulous people charge £50+ just to send an email!
Other solicitors charge a one of fee for the entire process.
If you want to get a good handle on your money, then
choose this option where possible.
6. Tip 3: Do You Have to Pay the Solicitor Expenses
Expenses may be added on to the fixed fee or billed on an
ongoing basis. Expenses are things like petrol, travelling
costs, parking, lunch, etc., and it can soon add up. To
minimise expenses, choose a local solicitor. For example,
by choosing solicitors Preston when you live in Preston,
you will minimise the amount of travel they will need to
do, and it’s also highly unlikely that the solicitors Preston
would be able to claim for lunch, when they’re not leaving
their hometown. Make sure that they explain to you what
they will be taking money for.
7. Tip 4: What Happens If You Don’t Win the Case?
If you don’t win the case, do you have to pay everyone’s fees
– your solicitors, their solicitor? If so, think very hard about
how you can afford this. These cases can reach thousands
and thousands of pounds. Make sure that you have
protection where possible, for example, adequate
insurance.
