Join ASBC, businesses and leading policy experts to learn why net neutrality protections need to be restored to protect an innovative, open, and competitive internet. Last December, the FCC dismantled net neutrality protections for businesses and consumers. The rules prevented internet service providers from blocking certain content, throttling speeds, and prioritizing access to consumers to businesses willing to pay higher fees. - ASBC has been involved with net neutrality as early as 2014, when we sent a letter to then-Chairman Wheeler urging the FCC to protect a free and open internet. Last September, we submitted a public letter to the FCC on behalf of 500 small and medium sized businesses in partnership with Small Business Majority and Main Street Alliance. We’ve continued to support restoring net neutrality with our members through direct meetings with lawmakers, press opportunities, and advocacy actions. If you haven’t signed on yet, you can at netneutrality.asbcouncil.org and we will keep you updated with additional opportunities to engage. We’re also working on the state bill to restore net neutrality in California, SB 822. We’ll be on the ground there on May 29. Today, we’re releasing the Business Case for Net Neutrality, ASBC's new report on the potential threats the loss of net neutrality poses to businesses of all sizes and industries, economic impacts, research, and thoughts from ASBC’s business members.
- Small Business Majority recently commissioned Chesapeake Beach Consulting to conduct a national scientific opinion poll of 500 small business owners nationwide. The poll found small business owners oppose the FCC’s repeal of net neutrality, and that many small businesses feel net neutrality is important to the operation of their business. I also want to point out the “don’t know” segment here.
- Small businesses are increasingly turning to the internet to sell their services and products online and to manage many of the administrative tasks required to run their small business. It’s not surprising then that a plurality of businesses say the principle of net neutrality is important to the operation of the business. Nearly half of small businesses (49%) say it is important, compared to 41% who say it is not important. One in four small businesses say it is very important to the operation of their business. Unsurprisingly, small business owners in the IT sector said net neutrality was very important to their business by a 4:1 ratio. I also want to point out the “don’t know” segment here.
