INTRODUCTION
Transportation is the movement of humans, animals and
goods from one location to another.
Modes of transport include air, rail, road, water, cable,
pipeline and space.
Humans' first means of transport involved walking,
running and swimming.
The domestication of animals introduced a new way to
lay the burden of transport on more powerful creatures,
or humans riding animals for greater speed and duration.
Inventions such as the wheel and the sled helped make
animal transport more efficient through the introduction
of vehicles.
WATER TRANSPORTATION
 Transport which can move on water are called water transport.
 Water transportation is the intentional movement by water over large distances.
Historically water was transported by hand in dry countries, by traditional
waterers such as the sakkas of Arabia and Bhishti of India.
 Water transport is the cheapest and the oldest mode of transport.
 It operates on a natural track and hence does not require huge capital investment
in the construction and maintenance of its track except in case of canals.
 The cost of operation of water transport is also very less.
It has the largest carrying capacity and is most suitable for carrying bulky goods
over long distances.
 It has played a very significant role in bringing different parts of the world closer
and is indispensable to foreign trade.

HISTORY
 The history of transportation on water goes back thousands of
years.
 Because water is the one thing that mankind needs to survive,
civilizations have always been settled near and around water.
 Historically, societies have always located near water, due partly
to the fact that water enables more efficient travel compared to
going over land.
 Waterways are critically important to the transportation of
people and goods throughout the world.
 The complex network of connections between coastal ports,
inland ports, rail, air, and truck routes forms a foundation of
material economic wealth worldwide.
Cont……
Waterways are important to a society. They allow the ease of
transportation to ship goods and people to all parts of the world.
Types of water transport include boats, ships, barges, canoes, and
submarines.
Within the United States, waterways have been developed and
integrated into a world-class transportation system that has been
instrumental in the country’s economic development.
 Today, there are more than 17,700 kilometers of commercially
important navigation channels in the lower 48 states.
EVOLUTION OF
WATER
TRANSPORTATION
TIMELINE
Many thousands of years ago, a raft made by tying
several logs together with creepers, was the first kind
water transport that a person could steer.
A frame boat, built like a basket and covered with
animal skins was another very early boat. A coating
of tar kept the boat watertight..
4000 BC : Boat builders in ancient Egypt used
reeds to build what were probably the first
sailing boats.
By 2500 BC the Egyptians were building
wooden boats that could sail across oceans.
These ships had sail as well as up to 60 oarsmen who rowed
the ship. The longboats were long and narrow so were able
to travel on the open sea, as well as along rivers.
1000 AD
Viking longboats
Chinese junks were sailing boats with a rudder for steering
the boat, battens on the sails to give them greater, strength,
and watertight compartments long before western ships had
them.
1100 AD
Three and four sailing ships were in service for
several centuries.
1450 onwards
Fast sailing ships called ‘clipper ships’ were
built. They had long, slim hulls and tall masts.
1800’s
The first steamships to cross the Atlantic
combined steam and wind power.
1819
The first ocean-going liners made of iron and driven
by a propeller were being built from this time.
1845
Some steam driven river boats had rear paddles and were
called stern wheelers, others had paddle wheels on either
side.
1880s
Coal burning sailing ships were converted to diesel
power, using oil instead of steam.
1910
The hydroplane is
invented in the United
States.
1911
The Titanic is built in
England.
Hovercraft float above the waves on cushions of air
and are capable of high speeds of up to 140 km an
hour.
1955
The N.S. Savannah, one of the first nuclear powered cargo
ships, was able to sail for three and a half years without
refueling.
1959
Used as ferries or water taxis, hydrofoils ride on wings that
lift the craft clear of the water so that it rides on skis as it
gains speed.
1980s
Hydrofoil
Container ships carry cargo in huge metal boxes
which are stacked on the deck. A modern cargo ship
can carry up to one thousand containers.
Among the largest ships ever built, these
supertankers are used to transport oil.
Cruise liners are ships that carry hundreds of
people on floating holidays.
1990s
Modern nuclear powered aircraft carriers, battle cruisers,
destroyers, and nuclear powered submarine are all used to
keep a country safe and to protect its territory.
Advantages & Disadvantages
Advantages
 Cheap.
 Minimum chances of traffic
accidents and traffic hazard.
 Requires cheap motor powers
than for airplanes.
 Possesses high load carrying
capacity.
Disadvantages
 Limited functionality
capabilities.
 Slow in speed.
 Difficult to monitor exact
location of goods.
 High weather susceptible.
ROLE OF
WATER TRANSPORTATION
IN
TOURISM
 Cruise tourism has been a growing market sector around the world, not only as a
means to travel to a destination but as an experience.
 The development of a destinations as a cruise port requires in-depth economic,
environmental and social assessment.
 Destinations also need to consider the capacity of existing tourism product, marine
infrastructure, land-based transport services and tour operations to meet the needs of
this market.
 Successful cruise destinations must provide a unique experience for visitors, have
well organized transport systems and public amenities, clustered tourism products and
attractions and a variety of excursion and shopping options.
 There are a number of considerations in developing appropriate and effective water-
based transport facilities and services in a destination including:
o Understanding visitor and resident demand for water-based infrastructure and
facilities and assessing this demand against existing supply.
o Assessment of the ecological, economic, social and cultural impacts of water based
transport.
o Consideration of the planning and safety regulations and environmental
restrictions for the development of water-based transport facilities.
o Development of a comprehensive management and monitoring plan for the
transport operation to ensure sustainability of the business and conservation of the
natural environment.
o Incorporation of all stakeholders interests and values to ensure support and
commitment for development and ongoing management.
o Development of public / private partnership to gain public support for infrastructure
development and private involvement in tourism operations.

Water transportation history and new trends

  • 1.
  • 2. INTRODUCTION Transportation is the movement of humans, animals and goods from one location to another. Modes of transport include air, rail, road, water, cable, pipeline and space. Humans' first means of transport involved walking, running and swimming. The domestication of animals introduced a new way to lay the burden of transport on more powerful creatures, or humans riding animals for greater speed and duration. Inventions such as the wheel and the sled helped make animal transport more efficient through the introduction of vehicles.
  • 3. WATER TRANSPORTATION  Transport which can move on water are called water transport.  Water transportation is the intentional movement by water over large distances. Historically water was transported by hand in dry countries, by traditional waterers such as the sakkas of Arabia and Bhishti of India.  Water transport is the cheapest and the oldest mode of transport.  It operates on a natural track and hence does not require huge capital investment in the construction and maintenance of its track except in case of canals.  The cost of operation of water transport is also very less. It has the largest carrying capacity and is most suitable for carrying bulky goods over long distances.  It has played a very significant role in bringing different parts of the world closer and is indispensable to foreign trade.

  • 5. HISTORY  The history of transportation on water goes back thousands of years.  Because water is the one thing that mankind needs to survive, civilizations have always been settled near and around water.  Historically, societies have always located near water, due partly to the fact that water enables more efficient travel compared to going over land.  Waterways are critically important to the transportation of people and goods throughout the world.  The complex network of connections between coastal ports, inland ports, rail, air, and truck routes forms a foundation of material economic wealth worldwide.
  • 6. Cont…… Waterways are important to a society. They allow the ease of transportation to ship goods and people to all parts of the world. Types of water transport include boats, ships, barges, canoes, and submarines. Within the United States, waterways have been developed and integrated into a world-class transportation system that has been instrumental in the country’s economic development.  Today, there are more than 17,700 kilometers of commercially important navigation channels in the lower 48 states.
  • 8. Many thousands of years ago, a raft made by tying several logs together with creepers, was the first kind water transport that a person could steer.
  • 9. A frame boat, built like a basket and covered with animal skins was another very early boat. A coating of tar kept the boat watertight..
  • 10. 4000 BC : Boat builders in ancient Egypt used reeds to build what were probably the first sailing boats.
  • 11. By 2500 BC the Egyptians were building wooden boats that could sail across oceans.
  • 12. These ships had sail as well as up to 60 oarsmen who rowed the ship. The longboats were long and narrow so were able to travel on the open sea, as well as along rivers. 1000 AD Viking longboats
  • 13. Chinese junks were sailing boats with a rudder for steering the boat, battens on the sails to give them greater, strength, and watertight compartments long before western ships had them. 1100 AD
  • 14. Three and four sailing ships were in service for several centuries. 1450 onwards
  • 15. Fast sailing ships called ‘clipper ships’ were built. They had long, slim hulls and tall masts. 1800’s
  • 16. The first steamships to cross the Atlantic combined steam and wind power. 1819
  • 17. The first ocean-going liners made of iron and driven by a propeller were being built from this time. 1845
  • 18. Some steam driven river boats had rear paddles and were called stern wheelers, others had paddle wheels on either side. 1880s
  • 19. Coal burning sailing ships were converted to diesel power, using oil instead of steam. 1910
  • 20. The hydroplane is invented in the United States. 1911 The Titanic is built in England.
  • 21. Hovercraft float above the waves on cushions of air and are capable of high speeds of up to 140 km an hour. 1955
  • 22. The N.S. Savannah, one of the first nuclear powered cargo ships, was able to sail for three and a half years without refueling. 1959
  • 23. Used as ferries or water taxis, hydrofoils ride on wings that lift the craft clear of the water so that it rides on skis as it gains speed. 1980s Hydrofoil
  • 24. Container ships carry cargo in huge metal boxes which are stacked on the deck. A modern cargo ship can carry up to one thousand containers.
  • 25. Among the largest ships ever built, these supertankers are used to transport oil.
  • 26. Cruise liners are ships that carry hundreds of people on floating holidays. 1990s
  • 27. Modern nuclear powered aircraft carriers, battle cruisers, destroyers, and nuclear powered submarine are all used to keep a country safe and to protect its territory.
  • 28. Advantages & Disadvantages Advantages  Cheap.  Minimum chances of traffic accidents and traffic hazard.  Requires cheap motor powers than for airplanes.  Possesses high load carrying capacity. Disadvantages  Limited functionality capabilities.  Slow in speed.  Difficult to monitor exact location of goods.  High weather susceptible.
  • 30.  Cruise tourism has been a growing market sector around the world, not only as a means to travel to a destination but as an experience.  The development of a destinations as a cruise port requires in-depth economic, environmental and social assessment.  Destinations also need to consider the capacity of existing tourism product, marine infrastructure, land-based transport services and tour operations to meet the needs of this market.  Successful cruise destinations must provide a unique experience for visitors, have well organized transport systems and public amenities, clustered tourism products and attractions and a variety of excursion and shopping options.
  • 31.  There are a number of considerations in developing appropriate and effective water- based transport facilities and services in a destination including: o Understanding visitor and resident demand for water-based infrastructure and facilities and assessing this demand against existing supply. o Assessment of the ecological, economic, social and cultural impacts of water based transport. o Consideration of the planning and safety regulations and environmental restrictions for the development of water-based transport facilities. o Development of a comprehensive management and monitoring plan for the transport operation to ensure sustainability of the business and conservation of the natural environment. o Incorporation of all stakeholders interests and values to ensure support and commitment for development and ongoing management. o Development of public / private partnership to gain public support for infrastructure development and private involvement in tourism operations.
